ABSTRACT

The main objective of the experiment was done in order to measure the absorption
rate of carbon dioxide by analysing the samples extracted from valve V4 and V6.This
experiment demonstrated the basic principle of absorption. Water was pumped to
the top of the column by a centrifugal pump (G1) from the feed tank (D1). Air from
the compressor was used to carry the carbon dioxide gas through the bottom of the
column. This counter current movement enabled the transfer of carbon dioxide from
air mixture into the water. Lean air mixture exited at the top whereas spent water
descended into the bottom of the column and overflow into the feed tank when we
opened the valve. Total quantity of 100 ml of extracted samples was tested with an
indicator phenolphthalein to identify the presents of CO2. According to our
background theory, red revealed the absence of CO2 and colourless reflects the
presence of the gas .Colourless colours were titrated with NaOH by dropping drop by
drop until the colour became persistent pink
