Introduction

Electricity has become vital in everyday life. It is tough to imagine a world and
human life without electricity. People consume vast amounts of energy unmindfully
and carelessly. Traditional meter reading is done by the human operator, this require a
more number of labor operator and long working hour to achieve the complete area data
reading and billing. Due to the increase in the development of residential building and
commercial building the meter reading task increases which require more number of
human operator. In order to achieve efficient meter reading, reduce billing error and
operation cost, automatic meter reading system play an important role. In present ,the
human operator goes to the consumer’s house, takes the photography of meter reading
and produces the bill. If the consumer is not available, the billing process will be
pending and the human operator again needs to revisit the houses. Going to each and
every consumer’s house and generating the bill is a laborious task and requires lot of
time. It becomes very difficult in rainy season. If any consumer didn’t pay the bill the
operator needs to go to their houses to disconnect the power supply. This has to be
avoided and have to be controlled automatically. In postpaid system, there is no control
use of electricity from the consumer’s side. There is a lot of wastage of power in the
consumer’s side due to lack of planning of electrical consumption in an efficient way.
In order to achieve efficient meter reading, reduce billing error and operation cost,
automatic meter reading system play an important role .In this Project, series of energy
meter, Atmel microcontroller, global system for mobile communication (gsm), Sound
sensor (buzzer),LED lights and c program software is used for coding and obtaining the
output.

Aim and Objectives

The proposed smart energy meter with advanced prepaid billing system is a device, to
make electricity billing user friendly and much more readable to the common man
and also provides a plenty of the following facts.
 To save Energy conservation.
 To recharge number of unit’s required (prepaid system).
 Lots of time and power saving for electricity department.
 To develop automatic controlling of energy meter.
 To design Non-volatile memory based energy meter storage.
Significant of the project
This project is significant due to the fact that energy supplier company will sell
electricity with the limit of usage. If so, they will find how to control the way of supply
of energy to consumer. It is clear that our system also allows the energy supplier
company to remotely control the supply of energy to consumer.

Scope of Thesis

The system consists of an Energy Meter, AVR microcontroller board and GSM
modules. Energy meter, EEprom, LCD display and gsm modules are connected to
microcontroller. The scratch card number and amount will be transmitted to the
Electricity provider through SMS. On authentication, the amount is also stored into the
EEprom. The meter calculates the energy consumption and accordingly deducts the
amount from the EEprom which is displayed in LCD and through gsm module alert
message is sent to consumer. The system uses a compact circuitry built around AVR
microcontroller programs are developed in Embedded C.

Literature Review

A smart meter works by communicating directly with wireless data protocol with
energy supplier, so the company will always have an accurate meter reading and there's
no need to take a meter reading. Smart meters can work in a variety of different ways,
including using wireless mobile phone type technology to send data. There are many
benefits of smart energy meter such as: smart energy monitor shows how much energy
are using in money. Knowing more about how much energy things use, will help choose
the way. My smart meters send us accurate, regular information about our energy use.
So our bills will be accurate and there will be an end to having to submit meter readings.
One of the most important facts for this project is high cost of the components so that
the overall cost of this project is high. As a result the manufacture cost is high. As a
result overall cost may reduce more. This thesis will be very important for modem time.
METHODOLOGY

The proposed and developed based on local prepayment and card reader. Prepaid
energy mater using a microcontroller from microchip technology, ATmega family, used
due to low cost of microcontrollers. So it is essential to develop a billing system which
solves the problem of billing manually and also reduces the manpower. In this paper
we proposed and designed a prepaid energy meter using AVR microcontroller
ATmega328 from ATMEL family. The reason for using these microcontrollers is its
high performance, power efficiency or design flexibility etc.

Expected outcomes

The expected outcomes of this project is to construct the desired system

without the use of program. Next step will test the use of program because of the fact
the study of coding is not easy. So , it takes long time to study first. If coding is ready,
it will be combined by the electronic devices to develop embedded system.

Limitations

In this thesis, there are a lot of limitations. Firstly, the main is to study microcontroller
well. Writing code is not easy to develop a pure program because there are two
languages to compile avr program using c language (low level language) and assembly
language (high level language). The study of coding is not easy. So, it takes long time
to study first. The second is a problem to test simulating and uploading hex file to the
IC. In addition, gsm module will be used in this system because the android phone and
java phone is difficult to find transmit (Tx) and Receive(Rx).The price of phone is very
expensive while gsm module is low cost. So modules are very convenient to use with
microcontroller.
