Question 5

a. Advantages and applications of CAD software over manual drafting

 Data storing and accessibility
Drawings can be easily saved in a computer and can be easily shared using internet
connection. Disadvantage of space allocation and sharing of drawings which are drawn
manually can be overcome from using CAD software
 3D views
It is difficult to create a 3D model manually and it would not be accurate to build up a
model using manual drafted drawings. CAD software is equipped with developing 3D
views
 Revisions
Usually you have to modify and make alterations to the drawings as you proceed with
the construction process. In manual drafting you have to redraw the drawing, but CAD
software offer lot of tools to edit the existing drawings
 Speed and Time
A drawing drawn manually which takes lot of time can be drawn with few mouse clicks
within a very short period of time. I addition, you are not required to draw anything
repetitively. Therefore, lot of time can be saved. On the other hand, CAD drawings
enable the user to take measurements quickly and prepare relevant documents within a
short period of time. Therefore, CAD software can save your time, increasing the
productivity of the organisation
 Accuracy
In manual drafting you have to work hard to draw with exactly correct dimensions and
alignments, but CAD offer numerous ways of obtaining the exact dimensions. Therefore,
accuracy of drawings is higher than manually drafted ones which is a critical factor in
executing the works in a construction project

b.
 First give the units of the drawing. Type UNIT on the command line and press enter. In
the dialog box, give the length type as decimal and precision as 0
 Then you have to give the limits. Type LIMIT, specify lower left corner as 0,0 and upper
right corner as 5000,5000
 Type zoom on the command line and click on All or type “a”
 Type “l”, specify first point as 225,225 ant type the horizontal and vertical distances as
4500 to complete the square
 Type “j” to get the join command and join the four lines of the square to make it a single
object
 Type” o” to get the object offset 225 mm outwards

Drawing the window

 Type “l” and draw a line joining 225,225 and 225,0
 Now type “o” to offset the drawn line with a distance of 1350 mm, 600 mm, 600 mm
and 600 mm
 Type “x” to explode the internal square and type “o” to offset the lower edge of the
internal square
 Type TR and press enter twice to trim the additional parts which are not required

Drawing the door

 Type “x” and explode the external square and offset the right edge of the square with
an offset distance of 225 mm, 300 mm and 900 mm
 Type “o” to offset unnecessary parts and make the void required for the door
 Draw the door frame using line command
 Use the “ARC” command to draw the door

Question 1

a)
 If the “calculate project after each edit” option is set off, starting date may not be
calculated automatically. To make it correct,
 File – option – schedule – calculation – select “on”
 Tick on show scheduling message box

If a task is entered as a percentage of the whole task, start date would not change automatically
