How do you think computer science, computer engineering and/or a closely related technical field

is changing the world? How you plan to contribute?

If I would have been applying to WTM before 1983, It would have been a letter on a paper and a
post but in this era of 4G, an invisible signal of frequency 1800 MHz having a wavelength 5*10-10
lambda, which is impossible for a human to see , technology is writing 4096 bits on the unseen
wavelength. Isn’t it magical?

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” – Arthur C Clark. Hence
technology is a man made magic. A blind person is now able to “see with their tongue”, a person
“can fly to Mars” , a robot “can perform surgeries”, studies can be done “without book”, cars are
driven “without drivers”, a single page contains all information (Google) and so on. Today our world
is captured by technology and we are guided by them be itwith the messenger or the maps.

Contributing to such a massive revolution would itself be a reward.

It is predicated by WHO that depression will be the leading cause of death by 2020. So I plan to
contribute in making the world depression free.... Strange idea!Beacuse suicide rate is exponentially
increasing day by day and that is not just limited to teenagers. What if technology helps them to
open up their thoughts to a counsellor or technology being able to read their brains and help them
to overcome the depressing state. This would definitely save many lives.

Apart of tha,t I would like to bring in more people to see technology’s mesmerizing effect for which I
am planning to open a small education centre for the poor kids especially for girls which will
definitely bring more talent and ideas to the industry and technology will expand to its new
dimension.

Structural issues underrepresented groups that you have observed or experienced in computer
science. What connection or effect do you think these have to the industry or the world.

Society is constituted by a diverse group of people and some groups are lucky to uplift themselves
but unfortunately other groups still remain underrepresented, especially in field of technology.

“I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved”-
B.R. Ambedkar, but situation is pitiful. I personally experienced the lack of women in this industry.
When I interned at Morgan Stanley, I saw very few women around. India being a developing a
country still faces the issue of women illiteracy; some parents still do not support their daughter’s
studies both financially and socially. One such example was my maid’s. She and her family were
against her daughter’s education just because she was a girl, then I and my family convinced my
maid so that she could allow her daughter to pursue engineering. And for such girls our college took
an initiative of opening clubs in girl’s hostels so that more girls know about the technologies and we
senior students of college tutored and counselled them. Because “Technology is a great field for
women because it gives them power”

Great talent is everywhere, but in an instant culture, we tend to only judge by a cover. This is what
happens with the group of transgenders, these people are keen to learn computers but they are not
welcomed. As computer background students, we took an initiative of guiding them about their
future in technology. These people have immense capability to serve the industry with their ideas if
given a proper guidance and if society doesn’t become a barrier to them. One transgender can be a
motivation and strength for others.

I think Computer is a window to peep into another world of magic where everything is possible if
every individual is given a chance to explore and express irrespective of the background they hail
from.

Please write about an activity that you are currently or recently involved in to address structural
issues for underrepresented groups in your field.

Committed and highly qualified talent is found in unexpected places. Diversity is no longer a myth
and so we decided to explore such talent by opening clubs.

Currently, I am involved in a club called “Atmabodh” which is an initiative by our college to attract
poor people specially ladies to be independent, by teaching them basic knowledge of computer
such as excel, power point etc for free. I could see their potential and keen interest to learn but
somewhere because of improper guidance these people are lagging.

Second initiative is taken for girls staying hostel by providing them the basic amenities needed for
making their engineering journey easy by providing them required books, computers etc.

Third club that we students initiated is “Gedit” which focused on improving the coding culture of the
college and making them prepare for the competitive coding world.

Currently, on personal level I tutor three girls who belong to orthodox family where technology is
not very easily accessible to women because of the perception that computing is a “white male
profession” discourages girls from entering the field.

Our goal is simple :-facilitate the path to technology for underrepresented

students through a network of support, encouragement, and
development.”
