A. Description of the Study

1. Rationale:

Vending machines nowadays are the most common. They are normally used to dispense a
product or item that do not require a sales person’s presence. We can see it almost everywhere such as
Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) and Coffee Vending Machines. Vending machines give us
convenience in purchasing and sales in products from automated machines. These machines are
effective and have a wide range and flexibility to be placed indoors or outdoors. They can operate
continuously and may accept cash or credit card.

As we observed, none of these automated machines sells the most basic needs of students
which is school supplies. In school, school supplies are necessity. For the daily basis, school supplies
have a massive demand in our society. The problem is sometimes students forget their things in their
houses because of some reasons. Students rush outside the school just to buy ball pen, yellow papers,
bonds papers, etc. It takes a lot of effort, time, and energy going to a store that sells these supplies.
The researchers thought of a device that dispenses a school supplies entitled Automatic School
Supplies Vending Machineby Using Arduino Uno. Considering the pace at which the world is
working in today, it is important to have fast paced machine that dispense what consumer need. This
type of machine is preferred by many traders because of the benefits; saves time, choice of product
available at any time of day and is just inside the school’s vicinity.
2. Objectives of the Study
2.1 General Objective/s:

This study aims to design and implement a vending machine that will dispense five
different kinds of school supplies.

2.2 Specific Objective:

 To develop a vending machine that is available in the university or campus.
 To develop a program for the microcontroller that would minimize the duration of
transaction in buying school supplies.
 To design a vending machine that would accommodate all the students in the
university or campus.
 To test the functionality of the vending machine.

3. Conceptual Framework

Figure 1.3 shows the block diagram of the research concept.Process talks about the
conceptualization then the integration of the important electronics parts/circuit of the machine. The
Input would greatly affect how the school supplies would be dispensed out of the vending machine.
An initial user feedback is required to further improve the prototype. Then lastly, the Output serves as
the validation, if truly the machine could address the tedious serving of the certain item.

4. Methodology:

The Development of Automated School Supplies Vending Machine works under the methodology
of the system with the objective to provide automation. Generally, the automation deals with the
elimination of manual work using electronic processing of mechanical work control mechanism. The
Arduino act as main processor.

There are various slots on Arduino Uno for connecting various external devices such as keypad,
display. The regulated supply provided overall system as shown in Fig 1.4.

As show in Fig 1.4. First, coin sensor is scan and after reading the consumer can select the
product as per choice. This is done with Arduino software. The motor driver circuits are interface
between Arduino and stepper motor. Because stepper motor require more current this is not sufficient
to provide from controller. The product is inserted in spiral spring which is connected to stepper
motor. If motor rotate fixed angle the product is available to user at output of vending machine.
A. Mechanism

 An arduino based vending machine is designed.

 The arduino can be programmed with arduino software.
 The coin sensor will be used for payment.
 The LCD display information and product available at output of vending machine.

B. Software Implementation
The software part is programming through Arduino Uno software (IDE) and upload it to the
board C and C++ language will be used for programming.

C. Hardware Implementation
 Arduino Uno kit.
 Coin sensor.
 School Supplies Assembly.

The entire system works based on the application of electronic, mechanical and electrical system.

a. Electronic system:

The electronic part of the system includes the microcontroller with the integrated chips so as
to perform the processing of the system. The microcontroller is used for the entire processing and is
coded using the software C++ program. Each and every part of the entire system will be controlled by
the microcontroller. This include the sensing of the reception of the genuine currency coin through the
coin inlet, deciding the number of item to be delivered, instructing the electrical motor to deliver
exactly the number of item, to be delivered.

b. Mechanical system:

The mechanical part of the system includes the working mechanism. The mechanical
components include the rollers, shaft, bearings, gears, etc. This includes the power transmission from
the motor to the delivery of the school supplies out of the automated school supplies vending
machine. The fabrication of the base and structure of the entire machine has also comes under the
mechanical work. The fabrication of the casing should be done by welding and riveting process.

c. Electrical system:

The electrical system in the automated school supplies vending machine includes the motors,
power supply unit with the transformer. The input power supply is to be stepped down to provide the
power to the microcontroller system in required voltage. The power supply to the electrical motor is
also to be taken care of. The required type of electrical motor so as to deliver the school supplies out
of the vending machine is to be chosen.
DESIGN OF AUTOMATED SCHOOL SUPPLIES VENDING MACHINE

The automated school supplies vending machine proposal in this paper, will be made by the
following list of components:

A. Microcontroller F. Power supply board

B. Transformer G. LCD
C. DC Motor H. Coin sensor
D. Roller I. Casing
E. Transmission drives

B. Scope of Work (Expected Output)

The Development of Automated School Supplies Vending Machine by Using Arduino Uno gives
a big impact to the society, most specifically to students. By this vending machine, students can be
able to purchase the supplies needed for the project. The vending machine can dispense any types of
school supplies that are primarily needed. The School Supplies Vending Machine will:

 Dispense five different items, namely: ball pen, bond paper, yellow paper, pencil and
index card.
 Use the coin slot for the student’s transaction.
 Be installed at the lobby area of the building
 Have a coin sensor and LCD screen.

The School Supplies Vending Machine will only be limited to:

 Only have at least 20 stocks per item

 For students each building of the university or campus.

C. Research Study Duration

The researchers are expected to have completed this study within one year.

D. Approximate Budget to Complete the Study

The approximate budget to complete the study would be (Ten thousand to fifteen thousand pesos)
P10, 000 - P15, 000.
