Earth provides enough to satisfy man’s need but not man’s greed. (Mahatma Ghandi,

1958) As the society continues to innovate and reach the top, the environment suffers

continuously just to achieve the desired modernization.

In obedience to the notion edited by Song Lifang from Xinhua news (2017), the average

collected garbage a day in the Philippines is about 35,000 tons. In daily basis, Metro Manila’s

waste products are about 8,600 tons.

Having that much garbage a day has a great impact on our environment since in our

society, proper disposal and proper segregation are neglected, and reusing those wastes are

such a challenge. Paper waste ranked as the 2nd most produced solid waste. Recycling paper

waste could be the best solution so far, but paper recycling is very minimal. The previous study

that stated 6,700 tons are the estimated usage of paper only 720 tons of them a day are

recycled. (ADB, 2004)

One of the mostly used and in demand in our society is paper. In everyday basis,

avoiding the usage of paper seems impossible. Papers are making our lives easier, mostly in

schools and workplaces. The big demand of paper are increasing daily, but the society are

continuing to neglect the fact that thousands of trees are being chopped down daily to provide

this need which is leading to deforestation and even larger scale of pollution both in land and

water.

The researchers created a solution to start a tree free paper without damaging the

environment, in fact helping it because this study aims to use one of crop residue as primary

source for the product. Paper nowadays has become digital because of the demand of paper
manufacturer. It lessens our production of trees. Making a paper from corn husk, banana fibre

and pineapple leaves can use as alternative to produce paper to increase the production of

trees. The non-timber resources like corn husk as the raw materials for paper production can

cover the percentage of paper production throughout the world. The banana can extract into a

fibre that can turn into handmade paper. Banana has a pulp that can make tissues, bloating,

tracing and printing papers. Pineapple leaves can also turn into paper to increase the resources

of paper. Like banana fibre, pineapple leaf is non-timber resources. Aside for consumption as

food, pineapple is a versatile crop in which all parts can be used for different purposes. Its long,

tough leaf fibres make good raw materials for the paper-making.
RESEARCH PROBLEM

This study aims to answer the research problem stated as:

1. The great demand of paper in the Philippines leads to complex problems that will be

faced by the environment.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

At the end of this paper, the researchers shall be able to answer the specific questions

stated as:

1. What are the characteristics of the created paper from corn husks, banana fibres and

pineapple leaves?

2.

3.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers conducted this study with wide-raging purposes. First, this study will

serve as a guideline for paper producing companies that are continuously cutting down trees;

with this research paper they can have the idea of using waste materials as one of primary

source when making paper. Second, this study will help the society to decrease the number of

wastes products being collected and thrown away by using them with a better purpose. Third,
this research paper can save thousands of trees by informing the public that such waste

products can be used in producing paper. Fourth and lastly, this study can help the

environment greatly specially the ozone layer since corn husks and pineapple leaves are often

burned to get rid of it since it is the only way which is cheap and easy to do and pollution can

also be lessen.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

1. This paper focused only in crop residues.

2. The researchers only used non-decaying crop residues.

3. This study limits only creating a paper but not a white fine paper.
