First Week of Instruction

Grade Level: 4 Subject: Social Studies


Day 1- TEK – 4.1(A): explain the possible origins of American Indian
groups in Texas and North America

Activities: KWL chart, video of The Kennewick Man, read “Comanche expansion: 1700-1800”
section of the Wikipedia article about the Comanche tribe and their expansion into Texas, family
tree/pyramid with members titles and duties, and a hands on activity using clay to build a replica
of a pueblo

TEK – 4.1 (B): identify American Indian groups in Texas and


Day 2- North America before European exploration such as the
Lipan, Apache, Karankawa, Caddo, and Jumano

Activities: Listen to Apache song on Spotify, read passages from the online article “Caddo
Cultures in Texas”, read passages from class textbook, watch YouTube video “Native American
Tribes of Texas”, and explore The Official Website of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas

Day 3- TEK – 4.1(C): describe the regions in which American


Indians lived and identify American Indian groups remaining
in Texas, such as the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, Alabama-
Coushatta, and Kickapoo

Activities:
Label and color regions of Texas on a physical map, photo slideshow showing the physical
character the regions physical characteristics, web search of remaining Texas tribes, and a
Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the remaining Texas tribes

Day 4- TEK – 4.2 (A): summarize motivations for European


exploration and settlement of Texas, including economic
opportunity, competition, and the desire for expansion

Activities: Timeline of the different explorers and reasons for exploration, read biography of
Cabeza de Vaca on PBS website and complete a graphic organizer of his accomplishments,
and watch YouTube video “The Seven Cities of Cibola”

TEK – 4.2 (C): explain when, where, and why the Spanish
Day 5- established settlements and Catholic missions in Texas as
well as important individuals such as José de Escandón

Activities: Role play bartering and trade, read textbook about Spanish exploration, identify and
label missions on a Texas map, and draw portraits of important individuals
