Old English Period

Old English Period, the earliest historical form of English Language. We first hear the Great Britain in 55 B.C when Julius Ceasar crossed the
English Channel and found the land occupied by agriculrural people called "celts". In 43 A.D, when the Romans under Emperor Claudius conquered
the Island. The social system was very simple. Justice was founded on the spirit of "an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth".

Middle English Period


Middle English is collectively the varities of the English Language spoken after the Norman Conquest (1066) until the late 15th Century. The
ordinary people of Middle Ages, ballads were more entertainment than literature, and they were not written down. Instead, they were sung over and
over by minstrels and troubadors in local celebrations and events, which helped preserve the gist of each ballad.

Renaissance Period
From 14th to 17th Century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and Modern History. It was a fervent period of European cultural
artistic, political and economic. It was called as "rebirth". The Renaissance produced tge fullest and freshest lyrical outburst in the history of English
Literature. Poetry seemed the natural language of the people. Dramas were written in poetry; song and lyrics were generously interspersed in
dramatic framework.

Neoclassical Period
In 1620 the Mayflower, carrying the first group of English immigrants to America landed in Masachussetts. They had intended to settle south in
Virginia. In due time the colonists won their independence from England, and a new nation was born, the product of a new land, but in its flesh and
bones feeling its English Origin. Revolutionary War, colonists won. The English Stream; John Milton and William Shakespear — two figures who
stand most prominently in English Literature.

Romantic Period
An artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of 18th Century, and in most areas was its peak in
the period from 1800 - 1850. Robert Burns (1759 - 1769) called the song writter of Scotland because many of his poems have been set to music.
Victorian Period
In the history of the United Kingdom, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January
1901. Victorian literature is that produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) or the Victorian era. It forms a link and transition between
the writers of the romantic period and the very different literature of the 20th century.

Rationalism Period
Rationalism is a philosophical movement which gathered momentum during the Age of Reason of the 17th Century. It is usually associated with the
introduction of mathematical methods into philosophy during this period by the major rationalist figures, Descartes, Leibniz and Spinoza.

Romanticism Period
Romanticism (also known as the Romantic era) was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end
of the 18th century, and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850.

Transcendentalism Period
Transcendentalism is a philosophical movement that developed in the late 1820s and 1830s in the eastern United States. It arose as a reaction to
protest against the general state of intellectualism and spirituality at the time.
