Giant Near-field Optical Binding Force between a Pair of

Close-packed Plasmonic Nanoparticle Homodimer and its

Controllable Reversal

Closely placed plasmonic nanoparticles undergo intense nearfield optical binding forces due
to the very high level of plasmon resonance interferences. Symmetry breaking using a
plasmonic substrate has been shown to generate strong reversal of binding forces as well [ref:
1]. Such forces can be surprisingly intensified by proper re-adjustment of particle size, shape,
orientation and by increasing proximity between the particles and between the particles and
the plasmonic substrate upto a certain limit. This work investigates a plasmonic nanocube
pair with a plasmonic substrate setup that exhibits an ultra-strong optical binding force as
well as a similarly strong reversal. Also it provides a strategy for optimizing those forces by
tweaking various parameters of the setup.
