Course Overview and Content
In this course, we will explore the roots of American experience through a survey of our literary
history, looking at the way a particular theme resonates across time. In each thematic unit, we
will study at least one work from multiple genres – novels, short stories, poetry, drama, essays –
from each American literary period. Our first units are as follows:
Unit 1: The American Dream
Unit 2: The Power of Persuasion
Unit 3: American Forums
Understanding our literary past will serve as a lens for discussing your experience in America.
Writing assignments will focus on both analysis of the literature and reflection of its themes in
relation to our culture today. Beyond expanding our perspective of America, our course
objective is to help you prepare for the EOC and SAT/ACT. To this end, we will continue to
develop the skills of reading comprehension, literary analysis, and writing. Each unit will have a
reading and writing assessment.
