Let’s face it. Our small talk culture in the Philippines is not always for the faint-hearted.

Probably you’ve experienced getting your mental health brushed aside by someone saying that you could
just sleep it off like everything will magically get better with a few hours of shuteye.

We all know that mental health remains a misunderstood topic in the Philippines.

And we know that people with mental issues are often discriminated.

Last year we lost 2 fellow iitiian because of suicide.

As a nursing student I cannot stand to see these young and talented students taking their own life
because of the prejudice they encountered.

that’s why I’m into the advocacy of empowering students to be responsible for their holistic health
focusing on their mental well -being in order to serve as role models in the community.

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon, I mayer pasandalan and my partner alesandra mocorro have come
up to the study:

PSYCHOSOCIAL CONCERNS AND MENTAL WELL BEING OF COLLEGE STUDENTS: A

BASIS IN DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING HCI MODEL MOBILE APPLICATION
PROTOTYPE.

As college calls for significant transition, it deals with unpercented amount of stressors, presence of
concerns may affects their academics and ways of thinking, but when stigma enters the scene it worsen
everything. According to the World Health Organization, near to 800,000 individuals take their own life
and there are numerous individuals who attempt suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading cause of
death among 15 to 29 years old globally WHILE…..

In the Philippines, the assessed number of suicides in 2012 was 2,558 or a suicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000
populace. The Philippines positions 150 out of 170 nations in terms of suicide rates.

Since mobile activities are being progressively embraced by individual, why dont we try using technology
to reach out to students, with the use of hci concept that allows a good interaction with the computer, a
more innovative mental health.
METHODS

The study is a research developmemtal study, which we use purposive and ramdom sampling to the
students who are eligible to the set criteria in msu iit, the researchers uses wembs and was duly approved
by the authors.

SO HERE IS OUR RESEARCH PARADIGM:

Our research paradigm correlates with the General systems theory by berthalanfy, which our input is to
determine, and data will ne intgreted which then serves as

Results and Discussion

To answer our objective 1: TO DETERMINE THE DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF THE

RESPONDENTS.

THIS INCLUDES THE : AGE, SEX, ETHNICITY, COLLEGE, YEAR LEVEL, GPA, MONTHLY
ALLOWANCE AND LIVING ARRANGEMENT.

SO IN TERMS OF:

AGE Majority of the respondents are 20-21 years old. According to the
Philippine Statistic Authority, the ideal age compositions by the level of
education for Tertiary/Baccalaureate Education are ages 16 to 20 years old.
As shown in the table above, it inferred that the 210 respondents are of
ideal college-age.
SEX Majority are female
ETHNICITY Majority of the respondents are bisaya
COLLEGE The percentage of each college are the same. There are 30 respondents per
college.
YEAR LEVEL Majority of the respondents are 4th year students.
GPA majority of the respondents have 2.51-3.00. Based on the results it can be
implied that majority of the respondents respondents passed the 1st
semester of the school year 2017-2018.

MONTHLY Majority of them have ₱1,000- ₱2,000 monthly allowance.

ALLOWANCE
LIVING Majority of the respondents lived in Boarding and Lodging Arrangement.

Physical Health overweight and underweight.
The results agreed on the study of Rice in year 2016 which he he noted
that the Students deal with many school requirements which can
impact their sleep schedule and diet. A high-stress level to your
immune system is not going to be working as efficiently and probably
an individual can be susceptible to other illnesses
Problems related to Majority of them answered Lack of family support followed by
Family Conflict with siblings and Conflict with Parents/Guardian
Problems related to
Friends, Partners or Data revealed that the most concerned issues were Lack of social
Close Relationship contacts, Conflict with friends and Conflict with roommate/s.
The results agreed on study of Fuster et.al in year 2008 where they
noted that the psychosocial problems, such as conflicts with parents, a
breakup of a relationship are often are cited by youths as reasons for
attempting suicide. Thus, this points out the goals of counseling as
facilitating behavior change, enhancing coping skills, improving
relationships.

Studies and increased workloads/requirements.
The results agreed on the IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social

coursework or workload.
Problems related to The most concerned issues were sleeping problems, anxiety,
Emotional Well-Being homesickness and depression
or Mental Health
Problems related to Data revealed that the most concerned issue related to other concerns

problems related to other concerns.

TO ANSWER THE QUESTION

“Are these worries, concerns or problems interfering with their studies or daily living?”

Data revealed that more than half of the respondents reported that their worries, concerns and
problems were interfering with their studies.

“Would you like some help to change things by What sort of help they would seek?”

Study revealed that the most preferred help were more support from family. Next was taking

advice and information on managing studies, more support from friends, taking advice and

information on managing money and specialist support like MHA( master of health admin).

OBJECTIVE 3. What is the perceived mental wellbeing scale scores of the respondents?

 As you can see on the table, the mean score is slightly higher than the median score that
indicated that more respondents were very good than those who were very poor with
mental wellbeing.
 Data conveys that 25% of the respondents had fair -poor mental well-being scales. 75%
of the respondents had mental well-being scores lower than 53 points. The results
indicated that at least majority of the respondents were fairly average regarding mental
wellbeing which indicates that a person mental wellbeing is efficient, but there is an
existence of some psychosocial concerns.
 The histogram reveals that the mental well-being scale scores followed a roughly normal
distribution. The mental well-being scale scores concentrated between 35 to 55 points,
which implies that most of the respondents considered having fairly average mental well-
being.

TO ANSWER OUR OBJECTIVE 4 AND 5 WHICH IS: To determine the significant

difference relationship on the respondents’ ratings for mental wellbeing scale scores by
demographic profile;

As shown on the table, the results showed that there was no significant difference and
relationship at the level of significance and, indicating that these data do not provide evidence of
significant differences between the demographic profile regarding average mental well-being
scale.

Conclusion
The study revealed that there is no significant relationship between the respondent’s
demographic profile and level of mental wellbeing. It was also found out the psychosocial
concern of the students that need priority attention should be included in the content of the
prototype.

SO HERE IS OUR THE DESIGNED PROTOTYPE. THIS WILL ANSWER

OUR OBJECTIVE 6 : Based on the findings of the study, what possible contents to include
in designing and implementing a human computer interaction model (HCI) mobile application
prototype.
