Compare and Round Decimals

Use What You Know

You already know how to compare and round whole numbers. In this lesson,
you will use place-value understanding to compare and round decimals.

Grace has a collection of buttons in a jar. The blue buttons are

0.008 meter wide and the red buttons are 0.02 meter wide.
Which color button is wider?

a. In the numbers 0.008 and 0.02, what are the place values of the 8 and the 2?
8 is in the          place.
2 is in the          place.
b. Compare those place values: There are       thousandths in 1 hundredth.
c. How do you know that 8 thousandths is less than 1 hundredth?

d. Write an inequality statement using , or . to compare 0.008 and 0.01.
e. Now think about whether 0.02 is greater or less than 0.01. Then write an inequality
statement to compare 0.008 and 0.02.
f. Explain how you know this inequality statement is correct.

g. Which color of button is wider?

To compare decimals, you can think about how to express numbers in different ways.
Each row in the table shows other ways to express the same number.

10

The decimal 0.008 is 8 thousandths. Since 8 thousandths is less than 10 thousandths,

0.008 , 0.010.
Expressing numbers in different ways can also help you round decimals. To round
0.008 to the nearest hundredth is to determine whether it is closer to 0.00 or 0.01.
Just like you do with a whole number, you round a decimal down when it is less than
halfway between two values. You always round a decimal up when it is more than
halfway, or exactly halfway, between the two values.
But, what is halfway between 0 and 0.01, or halfway between 0.01 and 0.02?
0.008

0 0.005 0.01 0.015 0.02

0.010 0.020

Since half of 10 thousandths is 5 thousandths, halfway between 0 to 0.010 is 0.005.

Since 0.008 is more than halfway from 0 to 0.01, round 0.008 up to 0.01.

Reflect
1 Look at the number line above. Is 0.013 more or less than halfway between 0.01 and
0.02? How do you know?

Read the problem. Then explore different ways to compare decimals.

Gary and Melissa compare the distances they walk each morning to get to school.
• Gary walks 3.275 kilometers.
• Melissa walks 3.24 kilometers.
Who walks farther to get to school?

Model It  Express the two distances as mixed numbers with like denominators.

Melissa 3 . 2 4 0

Gary walks 3,275 thousandths kilometers to get to school.

Melissa walks 3,240 thousandths kilometers to get to school.

3,275 thousandths . 3,240 thousandths, so Gary walks farther to get to school.

shows 3.24 as 3.240.

2 Both Model Its change the way the fractional part or decimal part of 3.24 is
represented. What is the same about how the denominator of the fraction and the
place value of the decimal change?

3 What is the same about how the numerator of the fraction and the digits to the right
of the decimal point change?

4 How does rewriting the fractional part or decimal part of 3.24 make it easier to
compare 3.24 to 3.275?

5 Explain how you can use what you know about comparing 240 and 275 to help you
compare 3   240    with 3   275   or compare 3.240 with 3.275.

Maura has a shelf that is 2.97 meters long. She is buying craft boxes that are
0.273 meter long. Maura wants to round these numbers to the nearest tenth to
estimate how many boxes will fit on the shelf. About how many boxes will fit
on the shelf?

Model It  Place 0.273 on a number line to see its relationship to nearby tenths.
0.273

0.2 0.25 0.3

0.273 is more than halfway from 0.2 to 0.3. It is closer to 0.3.

Model It  Use a place-value chart to compare 2.97 to nearby tenths.

Ones . Tenths Hundredths
