What’s wrong with using 304L & 316L ?
• The most widely used stainless Downsides:
steels for good reasons:
o Readily available
o Wide range of surface finishes
o Poor resistance to stress corrosion
cracking (>50°C in chloride
o Properties well characterized and
understood
environments)
o Sufficient corrosion resistance in o Insufficient corrosion resistance in

Minimise Cost
Different strategies:
• Use higher strength material to reduce thickness and lower material usage
• Reduce plate thickness and reduce number of welding passes (and reduce
quantity of welding wire required)
• Look for lowest overall alloy content, consistent with achieving the level of
corrosion resistance and other performance characteristics required

Summary
• Material selection involves thinking about a wide range of technical
properties, as well as practical aspects such as cost and availability.
o Short term lab testing can help with some aspects of material
selection, but..
o Long term experience/long term tests are the best assessment
method
