Maxima

1. Find two nonnegative numbers whose sum is 9 and so that the product of one number and
the square of the other number is a maximum.
2. Build a rectangular pen with three parallel partitions using 500 feet of fencing. What
dimensions will maximize the total area of the pen ?
3. An open rectangular box with square base is to be made from 48 ft.2 of material. What
dimensions will result in a box with the largest possible volume ?

Minima

1. Consider all triangles formed by lines passing through the point (8/9, 3) and both the x- and
y-axes. Find the dimensions of the triangle with the shortest hypotenuse.
2. A rectangular box with a square base and no top is to have a volume of 108 cubic inches.
Find the dimensions for the box that require the least amount of material.
3. Your factory produces lemon-scented widgets. You know that each unit is cheaper, the more
you produce. But you also know that costs will eventually go up if you make too many
widgets, due to the costs of storage of the overstock. The guy in accounting says that your
cost for producing x thousands of units a day can be approximated by the formula C =
0.04x2 – 8.504x + 25302. Find the daily production level that will minimize your costs.
