The Standards Division/General Services Department is accepting applications for several full-
time Civil Service Exempt Materials Testing Technician positions t h a t w i l l b e h i r e d
as the need arises.
A Materials Testing Technician collects samples and performs routine to difficult standardized
physical and chemical tests, in the field or laboratory, on soils, aggregates, steel, asphalt
concrete, Portland concrete, construction materials, inspects pipe fabrication, performs
nuclear gauge compaction tests, and submits findings in oral or written reports and takes
corrective actions when required in routine cases.
Specific tasks to be performed by these positions may include, but are not limited to, the
following:

These positions are based at the Standards Division testing facilities near Elysian Park. Field work
will be performed for Public Works, Airports, Harbor projects and the City’s Pavement
Preservation Program. Employees may be assigned other duties or work projects depending on the
City’s needs or for training purposes. Incumbents must be able to drive small trucks with
equipment and materials to and from the work sites, and may be required to work outdoors in
inclement weather conditions.
5/40 Schedule. Overtime and night work may be required.

Official school transcripts showing the completion of the required courses may be required prior
to the start of employment. The selected candidates will be subject to a physical exam by the
City’s Medical Services as well a background review, including fingerprints.
This is an exempt, at-will position. The individual appointed to this position will not accrue any civil service tenure,
contractual employment rights, or due process rights. The incumbent may be removed, without any finding of cause,
by the hiring authority.
