THE PEACE MESSENGER

Called to Receive and Share God’s Peace

SEPTEMBER 2018
Grace and Peace to You dear sisters and brothers in Christ!

In last month’s newsletter I wrote about all the events in August our church would be participating in and
spoke of our desire to be a part of our local community. I said that if we believe that God meets us where we
are – that God is in fact ―circulating around the neighborhood,‖ not just off somewhere in heaven, then God
will surely meet us out in the Poplar Fun Day’s tent just as much as in our sanctuary. I ended the newsletter
with God’s promise to meet us where we are at…. All I can say is be careful what you ask for…. But I will let
you who are reading this newsletter make up your own mind!

During our Poplar Tent Sunday morning worship, our wonderful accordion player Yvonne Kalin started
playing the hymn Amazing Grace as our offering song. Our greeter Amanda Gilderman caught my attention
and told me to look out the side of the tent and there, ―circulating around the Poplar Fun Days tent‖ – a
gorgeous bald eagle. I kept looking at the eagle long after Yvonne had finished her song – mesmerized by this
I fully believe a sign from God. I stepped back into the tent to start the liturgy for Holy Communion and the
eagle kept circulating. Amanda informed me that the eagle left only after we had finished saying the Lord’s
Prayer. I will forever be grateful for this sign of the Divine presence at our outdoor worship service…
Coincidence – I think not!

I am grateful for the 22 kids and numerous volunteers that graced our VBS Galactic Starveyors program – it’s
success surely linked to our participation in the Poplar Fun Days. We had record number of people come
enjoy our pancakes that morning. It was an awesome weekend, but bittersweet. My brother Colin passed away
Saturday night that weekend, I will be forever grateful for the love of this community that surrounded me with
compassion and care. That is also how God shows up, and God did show up… working through the hands and
hugs of others.

I returned from Colin’s funeral to baptize Lizzie Couling, Holden and Marielle Saari. In that baptismal service
we promised to tell Lizzie, Holden and Marielle the story of the Living Triune God until they make this story
their own.

As far as I can tell, Marielle has a great start. During the photos after the baptism, Marielle grabbed her
Grandmother Gail’s baptismal shell and did not waste any time starting her baptismal journey of ―living wet‖!
Should we be amazed that this 15-month year old baby knew exactly what to do with the baptismal shell?
She’s watching and learning no doubt in my mind!

See you Sunday, September 9th for Rally Day and Wednesday, September 19th for our Harvest Dinner.
We need the help! There are so many opportunities to become involved this next month!
Blessings Grow,
Pastor Donna

Yoga

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Now that summer is winding down it’s time to start thinking about other activities that can improve your health.
Since September is National Yoga Awareness Month it’s a good time to explore the benefits of yoga. Yoga is a
mind and body practice that typically combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation.

Here some of the benefits of yoga:

 Increased flexibility
 Increased muscle strength and tone
 Improved respiration, energy and vitality
 Maintaining a balanced metabolism
 Weight reduction
 Cardio and circulatory health
 Improved athletic performance
 Protection from injury

Certain types of vigorous yoga performed for 90 minutes five days a week can help with weight management
and weight loss.

Studies suggest that yoga during and after treatment for breast cancer can help to limit physical discomfort and
stress. It may help to also energize and relax women in recovery.

Yoga may be helpful in treating asthma along with traditional asthma therapy.

Yoga has been shown to help improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Research suggests that yoga can help to lower your risk of developing hypertension, a risk factor in heart
disease, and also help in the management of hypertension. It also helps lower cholesterol levels. Experts credit
yoga’s meditative elements as the key for stabilizing the lining of blood vessels.

Chronic back pain is the third most common disorder in the U.S., after heart disease and cancer. Certain yoga
poses may help to relieve pain and strengthen vulnerable areas of the back and spine. However, evidence is not
yet available on its effectiveness and safety for older adults. With seniors age 65 and older representing the
fastest-growing sector of the U.S. population, the basic tools of yoga such as relaxation, breathing and gentle
postures offer a powerful, yet low-cost and accessible means to enhance quality of life and to ease suffering
caused by many ailments common to seniors including arthritis, chronic pain and heart disease. Yoga has been
proven especially effective in providing relief in hand osteoarthritis.

Yoga, continued

Older adults need to carefully consider these suggestions if you’re thinking about
practicing yoga:
Put safety first. Yoga is generally safe in healthy people. However, if you have special health considerations
such as a joint replacement, arthritis, balance problems, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or other health issues,
talk with your health care provider before starting yoga. Start with an appropriate yoga class—such as one
called Gentle Yoga or Seniors Yoga—in order to get individualized advice and learn correct form.
Look for a well-trained instructor who’s attentive to your needs. Ask about the teacher’s experience and
training. Standards for teacher training and certification differ depending on the style of yoga. The Interna-
tional Association of Yoga Therapists has developed standards for yoga therapy requiring at least 800 hours
of training.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES WITH LIMITED INCOME

DID YOU KNOW there are programs available to help pay for your Medicare costs? Medicare Savings
Programs assist people with Medicare who have limited income and resources. If eligible, your Medicare
Part B premium would be paid for you and you would automatically qualify for low cost prescriptions. That
savings would be over $100 per month! Another program known as “Extra Help” assists qualified
individuals with their prescription drug costs. If you or someone you know is on Medicare and struggling to
make ends meet, contact Brenda Kohel, Elder Benefit Specialist to learn more!

More Parish Nurse News: The parish nurses are now selling Kwik Trip car wash cards in addition to
Kwik Trip and Holiday gas cards. You can get 5 Ultimate $10 car washes for $40. These cards are a great gift
for the hard-to-buy-for people in your lives.

The Peace Parish Nurses are starting a bereavement card ministry to provide comfort and
support to people in our congregation whose immediate family members have died. Cards
will be sent at the time of death, at 3-month intervals and at special times such as the loved
one’s birthday or wedding anniversary during the first year following a death of a spouse,
parent, child, or sibling. An appropriate Care Notes® pamphlet will be sent with the card.
We recently applied for and received a $150 mini-grant from Northern Waters Parish Nurse
Ministry to start the card ministry. We welcome people to be part of this special ministry.
Let Jan Stevens know if you want to be involved. Also makes us aware of congregation
members whose loved ones have died.
