KEYBOARD PROGRAMMING NOTES ‘The “pv soore" is intended to be used for rehearsal only. It has the vocal parts split clearly into separate staves, and the piano partis a reduction which mimics the sound of the full band, ‘When playing tne orchestration with the band, the Key 4/Gonductor should play from the “Pert Score," which contains a very different Keyboard part than the "PV Score,” and contains the programming notes for Key 1. However, the vocal parts are condensed in the “Perf Score,” anc bre not written in a way that they could be clearly taught from this. ‘The programming used for the Key 4 and Key 2 books are listed throughout the Key 2 (Perf ‘Score) and Key 2 (Synth) books. Listed in each sound are the range of notes for each instrument, and if there is any transposition of the sound. Key ranges are listed with C4=middle C, so G3 Ainuld be the G below middle C, and B4 would be the B above middie C. Transpositions are listed in haif steps, s0 “Sounds +13st" means the patch should sound an octave higher than the written note, and “Sounds -24st" means the patch should sound two octaves below the written rote. Key Lis primariy piano, electric plano, or a mix of the two, There are a few extra sounds layered in throughout the book, s0 a keyboard which can layer sounds and have sounds assigned to ranges would be preferable, but most of these sounds could be omitted without affecting the ‘Show much, as long as you have the piano and electric piano sounds. ey 2, on the other hand, is highly programmed. The sounds include brass, saxes, stings, organ, land synthesizer sounds from the 60s and 70s. This book provides much of the color for the Show, so its very Important to have a keyboard for the Key 2 player capable of splits, layers, and fssigning spect instruments to ranges. Examples of keyboards capable of this are the Kurawel Forte of 2600, the Roland Fantom and FA series, the Korg Kronos series, and the Yamaha Mott ced Montage sates. All of these keyboards have the programming capability and sounds built if {o effectively do this show. Another very affordable option is to use Mainstage, an inexpensive Mac program which includes 1000s of sounds free to download, and allows you to progiam vege in order with all of the layers and splits needed in @ neat, easy to read interface which con then be connected to any midi Keyboard with a comouter midi interface. ts also possible to Toad samples into Mainstage, which would provide the best level of sounds avallable, although this does take a litle knowledge of sample libraries. fusing samples, | highly recommend Native Ihstrurments section strings or Kirk Hunter for string ibraries. Native Instruments Vintage Organs has ineredible authentic Grawbar organ sounds, and the Chris Hein “Compact” Brass Library has [reat sounding brass and sax libraries ata great price. (Mojo end Broadway Lites are also good pop brass and sax libraries.) The cast recording end rehearsal tracks will gve you an idea of the Prended sounds throughout the snow, but the general goal is for the sounds fo be as authentic rer scoustie as possible, especially when programming the brass and sax sounds.
