The ARTIS-3 MODEL 5400 Portable EMI system is a 100% solid state Hall sensor system. The ARTIS-3
system is packed with the latest inspection technologies and features available, in an effort to detect more
defects than ever before. The ARTIS-3 sports an array of technological upgrades including new signal
processing methods and time-saving software functions.
The ARTIS-3 system provides a total of four (4) inspection charts of information displayed per joint. There
are eight (8) inspection shoes loaded with Hall sensor arrays providing more than 100% circumferential
coverage for both transverse flaws and small localized wall loss defects. Inspection shoes ride directly on
the surface of the pipe.
The ARTIS-3 also includes an array of eight (8) independently sensing non-contact, solid state Hall
sensors for larger, more gradual, smooth sided localized wall loss defects. 360° degree coverage is
provided for localized wall loss defects approximately the diameter of a quarter or larger with approximately
10% or more of the wall thickness removed.
All localized wall loss channels on the ARTIS-3 system can be reference calibrated and have a stable, flat
baseline.
** Localized wall loss defects, as we define them, are defects which are known to be undetectable by
induction search coils due to their low frequency flux leakage response. Research and testing has shown
that these defects are essentially missed and left undetected in the pipe when only induction search coils
are implemented for inspection.
The ARTIS-3 non-contact Hall sensors also provide a fourth inspection channel. Our “Full Length Wall”
monitoring feature is designed to detect more gradual, large area wall loss defects while monitoring and
displaying the thick-thin response of the body wall down the length of the pipe. As an example, these
defects could include gradual O.D. formation wear on drill pipe or rod wear in production tubing. Defect
detection is increased when a separate function is implemented and optimized for large area wall loss, due
to the way these types of defects influence the applied magnetic field.
** A single wall loss function which is used to detect both localized wall loss and large area wall loss
defects is much less effective since optimization can only be achieved for one defect type.
The ARTIS-3 system is 100% computer operated. There are no buttons or knobs to press or turn during
typical pipe inspection operations.
The ARTIS-3 system outperforms any search coil based EMI unit, feature for feature. The ARTIS-3 is
unequalled in the pipe inspection industry.
The ARTIS-3 systems provide a much stronger magnetic field, for better I.D. defect detection, than typically
found with competing units.
