SATURDAY
Welcome to another action packed issue of the SportSpecific.com Training Journal - #151!
Next teach proper cutting technique. Use the 1-2-3 cut exercise. Take 3 side shuffles then plant. After
each athlete can perform this properly, take the 3 side shuffles plant on the third and cut to the opposite
direction. Make sure the athletes are proficient in performing both of these exercises.
1) Funnel Drill - Need 6 cones. The first 2 cones are next to each other 2 yards apart. Place the cones
3 and 4, 3 yards away form the first 2 and separate them 4 yards apart. Cones 5 and 6 are going to be
3 yards away from cones 3 and 4, and they will be separated 6 yards apart. The cones should form a
shape of a funnel.
To start this drill, you should stand in an athletic position in front of cone #1. On a command of a coach
or training partner, laterally shuffle to cone #2. Touch the top of cone 2 then sprint diagonally to cone
#3, touch, then shuffle to cone #4. Touch cone #4 then sprint diagonally to cone #5, touch and laterally
shuffle to cone #6. Touch cone #6 then sprint forward 5 yards to the finish line.
2) T-Drill - Set the cones up to look like a T. The athlete starts at the bottom of the T (cone #1). Sprint
forward 10 yards to cone #2. At the cone side shuffle left 5 yards to cone #3. Plant at cone #3 and side
shuffle 10 yards to cone #4. Plant again at cone #4 and side shuffle 5 yards back to cone #2. Cut at
cone #2 and sprint back to the beginning to cone #1.
3). X-Factor: Set the cones up in a square pattern with each cone 10 yards apart. The athlete starts at
cone #1 and sprints 10 yards to cone #2. At cone #2 the athlete plants and sprints diagonally to cone
#4. Cut at cone #4 and sprint 10 yards up to cone #3. At cone #3 the athlete plants again and sprints
diagonally back to cone #1.
***Progressions: There are many different variations to these drills. You can add different cuts and
moves to each pattern. You can add different commands (audible or visual) to start the drill or to have
the athlete perform different movements at a given time. To make this drill even more challenging, you
can add an opponent or a ball, while making sure you are not compromising the technique of the drill.

Quality of the Dream Team
Work on individual players and made them to blend into a strong team.
Most of the players to be in their prime and should play the best football of their career, and
simply in a class of their own.
Players need more time to understand themselves and become a solid team.
The players need someone to mould them together and transform them into a world beater.
The players need to be fearless and ever ready to take the battle to their opponents.
The players should be hungry for goals and simply ruthless. Winning by wide goal margin.
The team need a team leader and playmaker who can inspire the team when the chips are
down."

3) Your attitude gives you the winning edge. When world heavyweight
champion Joe Louis got knocked down by Tony 'Two Ton' Galento in Yankee
Stadium, he immediately jumped back to his feet and went after his
opponent. When his trainer protested saying, 'Why didn't you stay down
for nine?' Louis said, 'What! And give him a chance to rest.' Louis went
out in the fourth round and won the fight. Possessing a great attitude
always gives you the winning edge.

Scoring More Goals
A Coach Asks
Our team has become strong defensively, and our mid-field is pretty good. But we can't seem
to score. We've had 6 ties out of our 13 league games, and only 3 wins and I'm wondering if
you have any suggestions about what to do to teach "finishing" inside the 18. We get the ball
down the field quite well, but we are having real trouble inside the penalty area. I've been
practicing lots of crossing stuff and doing a lot of 3v3 inside the box, with free players out of the
box on each side.
Partly its a function of the kids getting too excited when they are
attacking and making bad decisions, partly it is less than adequate
shooting, and partly it is a tendency to think "pass" first then shoot,
rather than the other way around (a major problem for us). But, we just
can't seem to find the net.
You get a new team and get to know them. Technically you improve, and you start to get some team
shape tactically and stop giving up so many goals. Pretty soon, you have some decent midfield play
and get the ball into the wings, and your team starts to get up and down the field. You win a few games
and the parents are happy. However, after a while, there is some frustration because you don't seem
to get a break. The lucky goal doesn't happen and the team doesn't get the reward it should have.
You start to realize that your team can play great out of the back, doesn't give up too many goals, and
gets up and down the field with opponent. Despite this, your team doesn't score enough to win your
fair share.
Knowing what training to use depends on recognizing the real problems that might be holding your
team back. Compare your team's play against this checklist of common problems to help identify the
problems. Which of these statements describes your team?
1. Play too Slow We play too slowly. We are fast enough running up and down the field, but are
slow at changing the point of attack. This happens a lot when we are attacking the goal where we
should be able to move the ball quickly to the feet of an open shooter or isolate an attacker 1v1
against an opposing defender.
2. Not Getting Numbers Up Although we get up to the final third often, we have lost our
willingness to get numbers up near the ball. Instead of having 6 players in the penalty area,
especially near the ball, we have one or two, then a few stragglers further behind.
3. Not Taking on Defenders 1v1 Our attacker with the ball often turns away from chances to take
on defenders 1v1 when the chance is there to penetrate into space behind the last defender to get a
1v1 with the keeper. Our attackers look to be afraid of losing the ball.
4. Play Ball Wide Instead of Through Our team gets a lot of good counter attack chances, but, in
going to goal, we often kill our chances by playing a ball to the wing, allowing the other team time to
recover and build a shape as the ball followed a lengthy course out to the wing and back to the
center.
5. Not Using Enough Space in the Final Third When we attack, our players in the opponent's
penalty area with pressure on their back make dinky little passes to our other players who then do
not have enough space to strike a goal before being closed down by defenders chasing the pass.
Page212 of 258
6. Strikers Not Working Together Our strikers do little to help each other score. Many times one
striker runs away from the ball and shows nothing but tail lights, yet demands the ball, as if there
would be some way for the other striker to play a long chip over the top. Strikers are not making runs
at defenders or space behind defenders to help the first attacker.
7. Avoiding Taking a Shot In the box, our players do everything possible to avoid shooting. We
are getting as many as 10 passes in or nearly in the penalty area with no shot.
8. Shooting at the Keeper When our players find a good shooting chance, they often shoot right
at the keeper, chest high.
9. Not Shooting at the Far Post Our players try to shoot near post when the far post was more
open and a deflection might stay on the field in front of the goal for a nifty follow-up shot.
10. Shooting High and Wide We shoot a lot of balls over the bar or wide. Many of our volleys and
strikes on the ball are shanked off to the side.
11. Taking Too Long to Shoot Inside the area, we take a long slow wind-up that is often easily
blocked. We don't seem to use a quick toe poke that would make the ball jump into the net, and we
don't use the outside of the foot.
If you can answer "yes" to one or a few of these, than there is hope that you can train away from the
problems and start scoring more goals. Here are a few ideas that you may find helpful.
1. Steal Training for Each Problem Seek out, steal, design, and assemble training to deal with
each one of these problems.
2. Shoot Against Pressure in Training From day one, start work on shooting technique in all
types of situations. At the beginning, focus on very fundamental work, but practice shooting against
pressure in every practice, every day.
3. Work 1v1 to Goal Each day, work 1v1 to goal with keeper. Keep score and rating players on
their ability to attack and
defend 1v1.
4. Focus on the Final Third Change your seasonal plan. Spend 75% of your training time on the
topics above, with most of your time spent in the final third. Make your players confident in finishing.
5. Make Defenders Attack In addition to the topics above, start getting defenders into attacking
roles often. Push them up and make them responsible for joining in all attacking in practice and
encourage it in matches.
6. Use Realistic Pressure It is never possible to have defenders pressure "50%". Practice
attacking situations against only a keeper, then a keeper with one defender, then more defenders.
Make sure that the attacking side has numbers up for much of the way to get success, but let
defenders play at full pace and full pressure.
7. Use a Keeper Play a lot of soccer to Coerver walls on a short field, but also play a lot of soccer
related games that require shooting to a full-size goals against keepers. Use a keeper in goal for
every dinky drill that goes to full-size goals, and even many exercises that go to half-size goals.
Page213 of 258
8. All Types of Shooting Practice pure shooting technique in situations of all types, including free
kicks and penalties. Keep track of all penalties practiced, and this can pay off big later. Top practice
shooters are often top PK shooters in the match.
9. Shooting Partners Have your players buy or borrow extra balls and team up with partners to
come out to your training facility or to any space with goals on their own to shoot extra. Have the
players shoot in many different situations, and give them a checklist of shooting exercises.
10. Anticipate Success Tell your players that you are sure the team will start to score more goals.
Then before this happens, and before there was much improvement, tell the team during a game that
they are starting to look good and that it is obvious are on the edge of really scoring a lot of goals.
As you start to get some success, hard work will fulfill your prophesy and your team will gain
confidence and score more goals.

Checklist for a list of factors which you will want to assess in the first 5-10
minutes
When of don't
you any match.
know anything about your opponents, you normally will decide
to play somewhat defensively at first. Start with your better players towards the
middle/back in order to get a feeling about the relative strength of the
opposition.
In general, the order in which you are going to want to assess the teams are as
follows: first, assess your own defense. Because the whole point of the game
is to score more goals than the opposition, you don't want to give up lots of easy
goals, so looking at your own defense is always the best idea. Secondly, look
at your own offense, and see if there are any obvious weaknesses in their
attacks. Third, check your opponent's defense for weaknesses that you can
exploit. Fourth, check your opponent's offense for weaknesses that may help
your team defend against them. Fifth, assess the referee team to see if they
will be a negative factor in the game. For example, you probably will not want to
use an off-side trap if you do not have quality ARs - or have no ARs at all.
If your team is on the ropes defensively, this is usually due to one or more of the
following factors:
1. No Depth: Your defense is trying to play too flat against opponents with very
good speed, and is coming close to losing some footraces because of lack of
depth. If your defense is pushing up too far, or playing too flat to be able to
contain a speedster on the opposition, you have the choice of Depth in Defence;
switching to the use of a deeper sweeper or putting your own
speedster on him.
3. High Pressure Defence: Your opponents are marking very tightly, and
playing very high-pressure defense to try to win the ball back immediately if lost,
which is rattling your players.
The opponent is using very high pressure defense to try to win the
ball before your players have time to settle it, tell your players to High Pressure Defence;
follow the motto: "When in doubt, kick it out." While this will concede a Close Marking;
throw-in to the opponent, your team then has the chance of turning Stamina;
the tables and applying hard pressure as well. Also, remember that Long balls up-
high-pressure defense requires quite a bit of energy, so these teams field; 1-touch Short
Passing
often tire in the last quarter. Help to tire them out by sending some
long balls up-field which they have to race to get. Consider rotating
players forward who will be out in the last quarter anyway, and use
them to wear out the best players of the opposing side. Ultimately, of
course, you will want to train your players to play a good 1-touch short
passing game.
4. Awesome opponent: Your opponents have one player who has spectacular
ball skills, and he seems able to out-dribble at least half of your defense when
he gets the ball.
5. Defensive Player not doing well: You have put a new player into your
defensive group, who is not doing well.
Multi-playing Positions
If you have a new player in your defensive group who is doing poorly,
consider moving him to the opposite side of the field before rotating
him up. In general, most attacks will come down the left side of your
defense, meaning to the left of your keeper when facing upfield, so
new defenders normally belong on the right. Sometimes, of course,
you will find a team with a very strong left-footed player who will come
down your right side, so you have to adjust.
6. Poor Marking or Diving: Your defenders are not marking well, and are
allowing attackers to gain possession and turn towards goal without pressure.
Also your defenders are diving in and using very poor defensive technique.
If your defenders are diving in, or not marking well, you can do some Close Marking;
gentle reminders from the bench ("Don't Dive" or "Contain", or "Find Vision of field
Your Marks" and "Mark Up"). E.g. tell them that they have to count
and look (1-2-3-Look, 1-2-3-Look) in order to keep track of their
marks while still doing some ball-watching.
7. Midfileders not falling back: Midfielders are not getting back, so that the
defensive group is constantly defending from numbers-down positions.
Mobility by Midfielders
If your midfielders are not getting back, carefully try rotating them
(one at a time) with your defenders. Usually, if a player knows that he
is a fulltime defender, he will stay back - and the more defensive-
minded players who enjoy defense anyway will automatically look to
go back, so this cure works in many cases. If you have a defender
who is straying too far forward, you often can appoint your CD or
sweeper to watch out for him and call him back. Also, in order togive
time for the midfielders to recover, tell your defenders to opt to kick
the ball out of bounds (even for a corner) in order to give extra time
for their teammates to catch up.
Once you are satisfied that your team is holding up against challenges well,
then it is time to focus on how you are doing offensively. You will want to take a
look at three areas: [1]. what you are doing immediately after you get the ball;
[2] how quickly the attack is being mounted; [3] and what approach is having
the most success.
Maintain Ball Possession;
Find Target Player;
It is very important to look at what your defenders and/or midfielders are doing Open-up to receive Pass
with the ball when they regain possession - because you need to maintain Call for the ball;
Provide Support
possession for a reasonable amount of time in order to mount a successful
scoring drive. Are they blindly whacking it up-field, or are they taking enough
time to find a target? When they look for a target, is anyone bothering to get
open - and call for the ball? Are they carrying the ball themselves if no pressure
is applied? If a defender is carrying the ball, is his supporting mid dropping back
to cover?
In addition, you need to look at whether your team is varying its approach if their
initial efforts are not working (i.e., taking the ball down the opposite side or
going down the middle if one side seems to have an exceptionally strong
opponent). If they are not, you need to suggest this at your earliest chance (but,
obviously, do this quietly). If your team has varied its attacks, which ones seem
to be the most productive?
After looking at your own defense and fixing any problems, and then looking at
your offense (and making adjustments needed), it is time to look at the
weaknesses of the opposition.
Obviously, the first thing that you want to find out is whether they have any
obvious holes in their defense. Has the opposing coach put a slow-poke or lazy
player on defense? Which side does he play on? Do their mids bother to
recover or just watch from the midline? Is the keeper clumsy (drops balls
frequently)? Does the keeper have particular problems with certain types of
shots (ground balls or air balls)? Does the defense play anyone deep, so that
you might be able to capitalize on offside? Does the defense push up too far?
How is the defensive speed when compared to your offensive speed? Do any of
their defenders tackle well? What do their defenders do when beaten (just
stand/watch or keep hustling)?
Based upon your observation of the weaknesses of the opposing defensive
group, you will be able to make suggestions to your players about where and
how to mount attacks that will have a higher probability of paying off.
After looking at these other factors, you will want to assess any obvious
weaknesses in the attack of the opponents.
Look for predictability. Who are their obvious "go-to" players? Who are the
obvious ball-servers? Do their attacks always come down one side of the field?
What type of support is provided to the attackers? How many attackers are
usually being sent forward?
This information can be very helpful to you in deciding if you need to tell certain
midfielders to mark X more tightly, or if you need to move your defenders
around to take advantage of attacking weaknesses. Be sure to look at what the
attackers do when your team is on a scoring run. Do they come far back into
their defensive half to try to get the ball? Do they leave anybody at the midline?
If all of their forwards drop back, you will want to drop your defenders with them
- and maybe just leave one player near the midline to apply immediate pressure
if any balls start heading back out. By allowing your defenders to guard the
opposing forwards deep in their defensive half, you substantially increase your
chances of winning the ball back in scoring distance of their goal - which is
usually worth the risk if your defenders are trustworthy (and will stay with their
marks).
