A Time for Harvest, a Time for Thanks
Kent Nerbum said, “Care less for your harvest than for how it is shared, and your
life will have meaning and your heart will have peace.” The sharing of the harvest
is in full swing and at Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, we are thankful and in awe of
the community that comes together in this act of sharing.
Through small acts of kindness – a modest monthly donation or a bag of do-
nated food – and large gifts of generosity – local businesses hosting a food drive
– we are all participants in the community goal to make sure we all have enough
this season. Special thanks go out to those vendors who help support our mission:

From fresh bread to produce, to cardboard boxes and vehicle maintenance,
local partners like these support Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes so that we can
meet emergency food needs head-on. You know how critical it is that each of us
has access to enough nutritious food to support an active, healthy life. You know
– and you act on that.
Roberts and Amidon state in their book, Life Prayers, “In times of major change
and social stress, people are challenged to stand up for what they believe.” I don’t
know if this moment is the most difficult, but I do know that it’s a major struggle
for many. Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes’ simple response – food for people in need
– makes a difference. Our more complex response – education and advocacy
– can make a long-term difference in the lives of everyone in this community.
These responses are possible because of your actions, whether through gifts of
food, funds, time or services, during these difficult times.
As we watch the season change - the leaves turn, the air grow cold - we are
brought back to the harvest. There is power in that abundance and planning is
required if we are to survive until spring. We are in a time of stress and change
yet we have the opportunity to stand up for something important. Thank you for
joining us in standing up for the simple justice that everyone has enough to eat.

Lori Moore’s Cookbooks on Sale in December
Holiday time means Potluck Pals cookbooks are on sale! Once again Kalama-
zoo Loaves & Fishes is partnering with Lori Moore, WKZO radio personality,
for her annual cookbook sale, with some proceeds benefitting our anti-hunger
programs. Dates and locations will be made available soon.

bring you Art Against Hunger, a season long
food drive combined with live music and gallery
walk events.
“Art Against Hunger’s intent is to call attention
to a growing concern in our community, as well
as create an opportunity to visit the KIA,” said
Joe Bower, development director at the KIA.
Join us at the KIA on Nov.19 from 5:30 – 7:30
for Art & All That Jazz, an informal evening of
food, entertainment, and community awareness,
with live music from Afro-Cuban jazz band Mas
Que Nada and free appetizers from Panera Bread.
Admission is $3 or free with a non-perishable
food donation dropped off at the KIA.

at the November 17 Project Connect event, which will also require

Art Against Hunger Food Drive at the KIA
A food drive will be held in conjunction with the Art & All that Jazz events
(Oct. 8 and Nov. 19) at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, 314 S. Park St. Drop off your non-perishable food items at
the KIA before Nov. 30 to help Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes stock our shelves for the holiday season.

Support World Food Day by Feeding Local People

In honor of World Food Day on Oct. 16, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes invites you to hold a food drive to benefit
hungry people in Kalamazoo County. You may not see hunger everyday, but it’s there. Kalamazoo is home to
thousands of undernourished children, families who can’t afford groceries, adults who struggle to compete in the
workplace with an empty stomach, and many who are just barely getting by. Your food donations will help people in
