Integrated Mathematics II Course Syllabus

Course Standards and Content

Course Rationale:
The California State University and University of California systems’ A-G admissions requirements state that
three years of Mathematics are required with a grade of “C” or better.

Course Description:
Integrated Mathematics II is the second of three math courses in a common core curriculum required to
graduate high school. It is also the second of three college preparatory math courses which meets UC/CSU
“a-g” requirements. This course will emphasize skills necessary for problem solving and continued growth in
mathematics. This course will involve group work, along with independent work, and will strive to make each
student a better problem solver. This course will involve group work and independent work with the goal of
helping each student become a better problem solver. The course content encompasses the following
concepts in alignment with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The topics will
include:
 Real Numbers  Interpreting and Building  Similarity
 Polynomials Functions  Circles
 Quadratics and Complex  Applications of Probability  Analytic Geometry
Numbers  Congruence and Proof

Standards for Mathematical Practice

In addition to course content standards, teachers of all grade levels and courses will provide students with
multiple opportunities to develop a set of skills applied to problem solving in mathematics. These skills are
referred to as the Standards for Mathematical Practice and are as follows:
 Make sense of and persevere in solving problems.  Use appropriate tools strategically.
 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.  Attend to precision.
 Construct viable arguments and critique the  Look for and make use of structure.
reasoning of others.  Look for and express regularity in repeated
 Model with mathematics. reasoning.

Academic and Behavior Expectations

The classroom will be run on a basis of mutual respect of three parties: students, parents and the teacher.

Student Expectations*
1. Be an active participant in learning (take notes, ask questions, study, complete assignments).
2. Come prepared for instruction and class discussions (paper and writing instrument).
3. Meet all deadlines and take personal responsibility for academics and behavior.
4. Be a positive, respectful, responsible, and considerate member of class.
5. Communicate with the instructor regarding any academic issues.

* Student behavior helps maintain the best possible learning environment and does not infringe on the rights or needs of
others. In the interest of providing the best possible educational environment, I will depend on your responsible behavior.
Failure to follow the rules may result in a verbal warning, parent contact, or administrative referral if a problem arises.

Parent Expectations
1. Attend school activities.
2. Use PowerSchool to check your student’s progress on assignments and assessments.
3. Be sure students are maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
4. Ensure students are at school and on time to school.
Teacher Expectations
1. Provide a standards based curriculum.
2. Provide a safe, positive and healthy learning environment.
3. Communicate with parents about student progress.
4. Provide feedback and return work in a timely manner.

Grading Policy
A (90-100%) The student demonstrates mastery of the standards.
B (80-89%) The student demonstrates proficiency of the standards.
C (70-79%) The student demonstrates competency of the standards.
D (60-69%) The student demonstrates limited understanding of the standards.
F (0-59%) The student demonstrates minimal understanding of the standards.

Grading Will Be Determined by the Following:

Assignments, Projects, and Quizzes (40%)
Students are expected to turn in their assignments on time. Students are expected to arrange make up dates
with the instructor prior to planned absences (i.e. appointments, field trips) or upon return to school for
unplanned absences. Students who participate in extra-curricular activities are not exempt from due dates nor
extensions of due dates.
Common Summative Assessments & Semester Final (60%)
Students will be given a summative assessment for each unit to demonstrate their understanding of unit
content. Students will also be given a final during each semester to show proficiency of course content. This
final will be weighted twice as much as the summative assessments. If a student is absent on the day of an
assessment, they are expected to take the assessment upon return to class.

Assignments Policy
Practice is an essential part of the learning process. Assignments both in and outside of class time will be an
application or extension of what is learned in class designed to further student learning in preparation for
success on formative and summative assessments.
Late Work Policy
Students at Hoover are expected to turn in all assignments on time. According to Ed. Code students have one
day to make up work for each day missed. Late work will only be accepted until the unit test and appropriate
credit will be given according to teacher discretion.
Cheating/Plagiarism
The unauthorized and/or undocumented (cited) use of work other than your original work is considered
plagiarism. This is considered a serious offense at Hoover. The penalty for this is a zero on the assignment or
assessment and an F in citizenship for any individual(s) involved.
Cheating on any assignment or assessment will merit the same penalty as that for plagiarism.

Mastery Model Retake Policy

Students will be given multiple opportunities within a retaking time period to retake a Common Summative
Assessment. In order to retake a test, the following requirements must be met:
 Attend a minimum of 2 hours of tutoring at the on-campus Hoover tutoring center.
 Complete a unit review packet. If the student work does not demonstrate readiness to retake the
assessment, the teacher may require the student to complete the packet again before being allowed to
retake the assessment.
Test Retaking Period
 All unit retakes must be completed before the next unit assessment is given unless arrangements have
been made and approved of by the teacher prior to the end of the retaking period.
 Exact dates for each retaking period will be provided in a timely manner by each Integrated 2 teacher.
The highest score for each unit test or retake up to 100% will be recorded in the grade book.

Good communication between teachers, students and parents is essential to maximize the success of students
in high school. With this in mind, please take a moment to complete this syllabus acknowledgement and
contact form and return it to me by way of your student. It will be counted as a homework assignment.

I will communicate on a regular basis with you via the internet-based grading system about your student’s
progress in this class. I will do so at progress report times and at other times as needed. I hope you will feel
free to contact me by phone or email at any time to discuss your student’s progress. We are striving to have all
students college-ready by the time they graduate from Hoover High School. This can only happen if everyone
works together toward this end.

Please provide as much of the requested information as you can. Please sign and date the section below to
indicate that you have reviewed the course syllabus and agree to assist with the communication necessary to
