THE PLOT:
England, 1959. Independent-minded war widow
Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to
open a bookshop in a conservative East Anglian
coastal town.
Local socialite Violet Gamart (Patricia Clarkson)
wants the old cottage as an arts center, and because of
her wealth and connections, maneuvers political
channels to go her way. Is it worth the fight?
LYNN’S TAKE:
Just like books transport us to another world, “The
Bookshop,” adapted from the novel by Penelope
Fitzgerald, presents a specific period with vivid
images.
Writer/director Isabel Coixet provides an
interesting look at small town denizens come to life in
wonderfully nuanced performances.
The leads are strong: Mortimer, Clarkson and Bill
Nighy as the town’s well-read recluse Mr. Brundish, an
unlikely ally for Florence. As a schoolgirl helper,
Honor Kneafsey is delightful, and James Lance is col-
orful as a catty BBC writer.
Despite books offering enlightenment, the age-old
dilemma of social status and cultural values rises and
threatens well-meaning owner Mrs. Green. A fight for
control through pettiness and power rears its ugly
head in the all-too-familiar role of viper Violet.
Cinematographer Claude Larrieur sharply captures
a staid seaside village and its daily life drudgeries.
This is a simple, slow-at-times story that offers
pleasures in the villagers’ portraits. Mortimer’s
Florence is a woman of substance and courage that
can be admired at any age, but is particularly
commendable set in a time before the organized
feminist movement.

Allison Flammang, D.O., joined Premier Medical
