Once operational, van der Hoven says, the wash plant will diver-
sify Bauba’s revenue stream away from the Chinese metallurgical
market into less volatile chemical and foundry grade chrome ore
concentrate markets, thus enhancing profit margins.
In FY2018, performance was negatively impacted primarily by
a weaker chrome market and zero opencast production during May
and June due to a delay by the Department of Water & Sanitation in
granting an application for an amended water use license (WULA).
While revenue was 14.1% higher at R234.261 million (2017:
R205.318 million), due to increased production partially offset by
a lower average realised selling price, profit before tax was 27.9%
lower at R104.857 million (2017: R134.144 million) and headline
earnings per share 31.4% lower at 10.09 cents (2017: 14.71 cents).
Some R75.101 million (2017: R12.474 million) of operating
cashflow (before working capital changes) of R107.075 million
(2017: R140,909 million) was invested in property, plant and equip-
ment and intangible assets for the future profitability of Moeijelijk
Mine. Consequently, no distribution has been declared.
The investment in fixed assets – together with 37 200t of inven-
tory on hand at the end of FY2018 – will help generate improved
future performance through increased sales in a favourable market,
van der Hoven says.
There was a weak start to the chrome market in FY2019 howev-
er, with record inventory levels in Chinese ports, due partly to higher
imports from South African producers and lower consumption in
June, a consequence of environmental inspections.
Further, market confidence was negatively impacted by the
US-China ‘trade war’.

abusers’
Women’s Day memorandum
gets specific
The Sekhukhune District Municipality held a Women’s Day event
at Maloma tribal hall in Makhuduthamaga local municipality on 30
August.
The purpose of this day is to attract all South Africans to be active
participants in the fight to eradicate violence against women, ensure
mass mobilisation of all communities to promote collective responsi-
bility in the fight to eradicate violence against women an to encourage
society to acknowledge that violence against women is NOT a gov-
ernment or criminal justice system problem, but a societal problem
and the fact that the solution lies with all of us.
Prtoceedings at the vent started with a march to Schoonoord
Police Station to deliver a memorandum. Sekhukhune District Munici-
pality Council speaker Cllr Maria Manamela led the march of Progres-
sive Women Structures handed over the memorandum of grievances.
Some of the demands in the memorandum include working together
with the Police to arrest abusers and denying bail for anyone alleged
to have abused a woman.

‘What we need for a mining
boom’ - Roger Baxter
Minerals Council CEO, Roger Baxter presented at the
Africa Down Under conference in Perth, Australia on 30
August about South Africa’s mining potential..
Mr Baxter noted: “South Africa’s mining potential
is huge. Even in the absence of a Greenfields explo-
ration boom in South Africa, mining investment could
almost double in the next four years if the country was
to return to the top 25% of the most attractive mining
investment destinations worldwide. This would result
in another 200,000 jobs being created in the economy
with 50,000 direct jobs created in mining alone; output,
exports and procurement would increase substantially;
as would direct and indirect taxes, and royalties paid to
the fiscus; and the mining industry would be in a better
position to increase its contribution towards infrastruc-
ture development and social projects in mining-affected
communities. Given the industry’s commitment to real
transformation, this would also materially advance the
entire country’s transformation agenda.
Mr Baxter pointed out that in recent years South
Africa had not realised its significant mining potential.
“In 2017, South Africa was rated 48th out of 91 min-
ing jurisdictions in the Fraser Institute’s mining invest-
ment attractiveness rankings, despite being ranked 20th
out of 91 for the country’s mineral potential assuming

best policy and regulatory practice. South Africa’s
mineral policies were ranked 81 out of 91 jurisdictions,
and clearly there is a mismatch between the mineral
potential and the policy scorecard. T
he consequences are evident with real net capital
formation in mining declining by over 50% between
2013 and 2017. South Africa accounted for a poor 1% of
total global exploration expenditure in 2017 compared to
14% for Canada and Australia respectively and 13% for
the rest of Africa.
The top issues that have been undermining the
competitiveness of South Africa’s mining and explo-
ration sectors are policy and regulatory uncertainty,
costs rising at rates well above inflation, infrastructural
constraints, restraints on exploration, a lack of trust
between stakeholders and corruption.
Mr Baxter outlined the key requirements that would
enable the South African mining industry to realise
its full potential which include: A shared Vision of the
furture of the mining industry; ethical leadership and
good governance; policy and regulatory certainty and
competitiveness; available, efficient, cost competitive
and reliable infrastructure; improving productivity and
competitiveness; and creating a “greenfields exploration
boom”.

Mines cares for communities
This week Samancor Eastern Chrome
Mines (ECM) hosted an HIV Peer Edu-
cator Training Course.
The event was attended by 28 people
who were selected from communities
surrounding the mine and include are-
as such as Eerstegeluk, Ga-Mampuru,
Riba-Cross, Driekop and Ga-Maroga.
The group received training from
Monday to Wednesday from Positively
Alive’s Employee Wellness Consultant
and Specialist trainer, Alan Brand.
Over the course of the three days
the group expanded their knowledge
of HIV, learned how to help
people in the community living
with HIV, they were empow-
ered to now offer counselling
and support and teach others
about the illness.
Brand has been living with
HIV since 1997 and has been
taking anti-retroviral medica-
tion since 2004. This gives him
a perspective that makes the
training relevant and filled with
impact.
The group will now embark
on a 20 week practical imple-
mentation programme in their
communities and complete a
test to receive certificates for
their attendance and training.

This training helped us to know how
to teach, care and share about the
illness. It also trained us to not be

the right path to reach our destiny.
Samancor ECM did a great thing in
organising this training. We really
needed it. We are really thankful and would love for them
to come back again and work together in the community.

TUPS spring fever in the air

On Saturday 1 September spring was in the air but for TUPS Sport it was all
about sweat, water and more. Eight ace teams of the new sporting code took
each other head-on.
The opening match was played between Sedupe TUPS Club from Tafelkop
in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality versus Makhutšo TUPS Club from Ward
31 of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality. The experienced Sedupe TUPS Club
trounced the newcomers 4-5.
Team B TUPS Club from Tafelkop made their way to the semi’s lashing Stry-
dkraal TUPS Club 11 to no goal. Regae TUPS Club was rolled over by Itireleng
TUPS Club from Mphanama in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality. This
took Itireleng to the second round where they tasted 11-5 defeat from Team B
TUPS Club. Sedupe repeated its winning streak by an elevating 11-5 victory
over Strydkraal TUPS Club.
Itireleng TUPS Club tried its hand on Sedupe TUPS Club but fall short at
3 – 4 final whistle score in favour of Sedupe.
The highlight of the day was the Semi-final match between the new comers
Itireleng TUPS Club which showed a brave face against Team B TUPS Club by
scoring the opening goal. It was a narrow victory for Team B as they pulled a
5 - 4 win. The final match was an electrifying spectacle between the Tafelkop
giants Sedupe TUPS Club against Team B. Team B emerged victorious with a
7 – 1 victory over Sedupe.
Like a typical Spring Day outing the host venue of the tournament happened
to be an entertaining waterpark and lifestyle lounge on the R579 road between
Monsterlus and Jane Furse. The players was keen to cool off in the swimming pool
after their different games. The Baeti Bikers Club also added colour to the event.

golf day a huge success
Steelpoort Academy hosted their
annual golf day on Saturday last
week. The day was well supported
and the players braved the early
summer heat to complete the 18
hole competition.
The day’s winners were Motsha and
Patrick (photograph just below with
school principal, Mr Alberts). Second
place was taken by Thinus and
Gerard. Third place by Gerhard and
Shaun.
The school would like to thank every

Next weekend on the 15th September the Nederduitsch Hervorm-
de Kerk in Tubatse’s annual golf day will be taking place at Tubatse
Chrome Golf Club. Tee-off will be at 08:00 and everyone is wel-
