REPORT ON RENEWABLE ENERGIES & ITS USES

Renewable Energy:-
Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are
naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves,
and geothermal heat.

TYPES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY:-

There are following types of renewable energy:-

 Biomass.
 Geothermal
 Hydro Power.
 Solar Energy.
 Tidal Power.
 Wave Power.
 Wind Energy.

1) BIOMASS:-

Biomass contain stored energy from the sun. When biomass is burned, the chemical
energy in biomass is released as heat.

2) GEOTHERMAL:-

Geothermal Energy is the heat from the earth shallow ground to hot water and hot
rock found a few miles benath the earth surface.

3) WIND ENERGY:-

Wind Energy is the process by which wind is used to generate electricity. Wind
turbine converts the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power.

4) SOLAR ENERGY:-

Solar Power is conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity directly using
photovoltaics(PV), indirectly using concentrated solar power.

5) TIDAL POWER:-

Tidal Power is the form of hydro power that converts the energy obtain from tides
into useful form of power mainly electricity.

6) HYDRO POWER:-

This is called hydroelectric power or hydropower. The most common type of

hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir.

CASE STUDY

1) JHIMPIR WIND POWER PLANT:-

 Location:
Fauji Fertilizer Company Energy Limited (FFC Energy Ltd or FFCEL), in 2012
completed a 49.5 MW wind Energy Farm at Jhimpir, Sindh, Pakistan
near Karachi.

 Features / Benefits:-

o An agreement has been signed for the installation of 150 megawatt (MW) wind
project in Jhimpir, Sindh. The agreement was inked between representatives of
Tricon Boston Consulting Private Limited (TBCPL) – a special purpose vehicle set
up by Sapphire Textile Mills Limited – and General Electric (GE).

o A statement issued by General Electric says that this will be the largest wind project
in the Jhimpir corridor.

o Under the agreement, GE will provide 87 wind turbines to the engineering,

procurement and construction contractor Power China for implementation in the
Gharo-Keti Bandar Wind Corridor in Jhimpir. The company will also be providing
10 years of operations and maintenance services.

o Which has been supplying 500 to 700 megawatt-hour of electricity daily to the
national grid for over two months now while another wind power project is set to
begin its commercial operation

2) TARBELA HYDRO POWER DAM:-

 Information:-

Owner: Water and Power Development Authority

Location: Haripur and Swabi districts, Pakistan
River System: Indus River
Capacity: 3,478 MW
Generating Units: 14
Dam Type: Earth and rockfill, plus two auxiliary dams with spillways
Construction Start Date: 1968
Operational Date: First unit April 1977, 14th unit May 1992
Project Status: Three powerhouses completed, one under construction, one more
planned for future.

 Findings:-
Companies Under Contract:
CGE – Supplied Generators 5-8
DBS – Supplied Turbines 9 and 10
DBS/SEW – Supplied Turbines 11-14
DEW – Supplied Turbines 5-8
Hitachi – Supplied turbines and generators for Tarbela 1 and Generators 9 and 10 for
Tarbela 2
Jeumont Schneider – Supplied transformers for Tarbela 1
Salini Impregilo – Dam construction contractor
Siemens – Supplied Generators 11-14
Sinohydro – Tarbela 4 contractor
Voith Hydro – Tarbela 4 electromechanical equipment supplier.

 Features / Benefits:-
o Tarbela Dam is 485 feet high above the riverbed and forms Tarbela Reservoir
with a surface area of about 250 km2.
o The dam was built for water supply but power generating capacity was added in
three “extensions” that were completed in 1992.
o The 700-MW Tarbela 1 (commissioned in 1977) features four units, 1,050-MW
Tarbela 2 six units (four commissioned in 1982 and two in 1985) and 1,728-MW
Tarbela 3 four units (commissioned in 1992 and 1993).
o More than 70% of the water released from Tarbela Dam passes over the two
spillways and is not used for power generation. Thus, construction began in 2014
on the 1,410-MW Tarbela 4 extension and a 1,410-MW Tarbela 5 extension is
planned but construction has not yet begun.
o In addition to fulfilling the primary purpose of the dam, i.e., supplying water for
irrigation, Tarbela Power Station has generated 341.139 billion kWh of
cheap hydro-electric energy since commissioning. A record annual generation of
16.463 billion kWh was recorded during 1998–99. Annual generation during
2007–08 was 14.959 billion kWh while the station shared peak load of 3702 MW
during the year, which was 23.057% of total WAPDA system peak.
