579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M) Global Support

Vicksburg students learn about physics and culture from FEST-M Soldier

VICKSBURG, Miss. (Nov. 6, 2009) – With his uniform neatly pressed, medals
proudly displayed, and shoes lightly shined, the Army captain looked over his
slides just before it was time to give his presentation. As he glanced up to
survey the room, the students’ eyes darted at him waiting for his next move.
Unnerved, he stood at ease ready to speak about his experiences in the
military and how it relates to everyday life.

Capt. Willie Hutchinson, signal officer for the 579th Engineer Detachment
(FEST-M), helped commemorate Veterans Day by speaking with Vicksburg
High School students about the physics of field artillery and Afghan culture at To commemorate Veterans Day, Capt. Willie Hutchinson,

“I’m grateful to be able to present today,” Hutchinson said. “The Army has
given me great stories to tell and now it’s also given me an audience to share my experiences. In and out of uniform,
I’m always a Soldier, so I wanted to show how my life relates to theirs.”

As part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District’s Adopt-A-School program with Vicksburg High
School, Hutchinson started the day by reporting to Sylvia Lamb’s physics classroom.

“Being a part of the signal corps, there really isn’t much trajectory and computations,” added Hutchinson. “But I
knew I could draw upon my time as a field artillery officer to explain the required physics. The whole call for fire
process has many steps, many of which physics is involved. You just can’t point and shoot when it comes to field
artillery. You have to make accurate calculations to hit your target.”

Hutchinson filled the white board with drawing and measurements, and finished off his presentation with videos of
projectiles firing and landing on their assigned target.

Next was to Theresa Moore’s class in the World Language Department, where Hutchinson and the students
discussed his time in Afghanistan, including the geography, currency, language, and customs. He shared pictures of
himself in the desert and even brought some souvenirs to pass around.

“The students were very eager to learn about how others live outside of America,” said Moore. “Any chance you get
to expose the students to life outside their own is a great experience for them. I certainly look forward to the next
time we can make this happen.”

In the meantime, Hutchinson plans to have his squared away uniform readily available for when that next time
arrives.
