ABSTRACT

Today different ranges of power supplies are required for relaying systems. For this
application different rating signals for both AC and DC should be converted. NASA developed
Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) for this purpose in their space shuttles. Now SMPS and
related technologies have many applications in various control systems.

AMARARAJA POWER SYSTEMS PRIVATE LIMITED is producing Switch Mode

Power Supply (SMPS) and Integrated Power Supply (IPS) for various industrial applications.
This company currently has BSNL and Indian Railways as major customers. Different topologies
are implemented in designing according to customer requirements. This study project deals with
current topologies of SMPS, IPS and introduction to the advanced technology Solar Photo
Voltaic (SPV).

Now-a-days, SMPS are becoming more popular and applicable because of its reliability,
light weight, efficiency and cost effectiveness. The SMPS based power supplies is one of the
advanced versions of power supplies. Power supply system is the heart of signaling system. For a
reliable signaling system installation, reliable power supply system is most important. The major
function of SMPS is to provide a stable and reliable DC power supply; it is designed and
developed with a view to provide complete power solutions from single system to all signaling
circuits. SMPS based IPS are also used for power stations for DC and AC power supply. The
basic operation of SMPS is continuous power supply to relaying circuit at any cause of power
failure through batteries. SMPS has internally have battery charger for charging the battery in
various modes and at same time to supply he load requirements. The battery can be charged
automatically either in Float mode or Boost modes depending upon the condition of the battery.
SMPS works wide range of input voltages (175-300V) AC at different loading conditions.

SPV is an advanced technology which uses non-conventional energy resource, where

Solar Photo Voltaic Arrays are used as input power source for load as well as batteries
implementation in real time applications is very costly and require large backup. By introducing
this technique pure automaton of entire system is possible.
