Harmony II, MUC 113

Project 1, Template
3 phrase group with extension
Dr. Hirt

Compose a three phrase group with 4 or 8 measures per phrase in 4/4. The last phrase
may be extended to 6 or 16 measures for a more complete ending. Use a similar style to
the example for “non-chord tones” included in your packet. Generally this will
include a melody accompanied by simple chordal or homophonic style in three or four
parts. Students may apply an Alberti pattern as desired. Be careful to follow all rules
for proper voice-leading as studied this year.

Projects must be completed on finale software and submitted through Bb as a pdf and
MUS(notMUSX), and a printed (hard copy) must be handed in as well. Your work
must be on one page. Use the pagination tool under Page layout, Fit music to select the
number of measures per line. Students must complete a wave recording of their
projects to play for the class, no exceptions!

Step one: Create a harmonic progression in G major being sensitive to

harmonic rhythm in 4/4 (see below) and cadence structure as it relates to form (you
must end with a PAC. Students must use a pedal tone on the tonic or dominant near
the end. Be sure to plan for this in the initial conception of your progression. Try to
create a progression which is not only functional but is beautiful and inventive as well.
The following harmonic rhythms may be used: 4/4 Q Q Q Q or H Q Q or H H and a mixture is

preferred especially use slower harm. rhy at cadences including w where appropriate.

Step two: Compose your melody. Use a simple motive to unify your melody. Also
be careful to create melodic goals which give direction to each phrase and culminate in
an overall pitch goal which is generally found somewhere in the third phrase. In this
melody students must use at least: 2 suspensions, 2 et, 2 app, 1 ng, 2 pt, 2 nt, 1 ant. and
in the bass a pedal tone near the end. Please use as many NCTs as you like and feel are
appropriate. The left hand part should use alberti or arpeggiated bass to some degree.
The harmonic rhythm for this project should be slower than chorale style[generally at
the half note].

Please note that this project will have nearly the weight on an exam toward your final
grade.
