EQ: What is the impact technology has on learning in schools?

Three Points to Prove: #1:Technology positively impacted learning by providing new opportunities
#2:Also by providing hands on learning experience
#3: Technology has negatively impacted learning by shortening attention span
#4:Also by making humans dumber
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: #3 Technology has negatively impacted learning by shortening attention
span

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“The social networks are many, starting with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, and I do not know how many
more” said Palerm Ferri to argue that technology improves communication between people.(Ferri 37)

After the introduction of technology kids became lazy: “Students presented their work without even reading and, in some
cases not even writing, resorting to a simple copy and paste”

Although technology helped kids to interact more, it hindered face to face communication: “ The young people could not
talk in front of the group nor face-to-face among themselves.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This website provides arguments about both how communication has positively impacted technology and how it
has also negatively impact communication. This supports my point to prove because the author suggests that technology
improves the interaction of students, though it hinders the face-to-face communication of students. Instead of talking face-
to-face students would rather interact through social media or texting. The quotes that I received from this source helps to
prove more of the negative impacts of technology because it provides me with evidence that technology makes the work
ethic of students weaker.
This source is also from a teacher's perspective. This is useful because teachers observe students everyday in
class. From a teacher’s perspective students are becoming worst at critical thinking and more lazy. There was one specific
example where the teacher was going to help a friends son in 12th grade on a essay and when they met up the son’s essay
was due in 3 hours and he did no prior research before going to the teacher, he had 3 weeks to do it.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: # 1: Technology Positively impacted learning by providing new opportunities.
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
An study from the University of Alabama argues that technology increase student learning specifically for Math “As a way to
improve study habits and time on task the courses relied on frequent assessment and immediate every class period, homework
completion percentage and the homework grade for the course relate strongly to students’ active learning”.

The author provides a solution to counteract the students becoming less engaged and active in class “One direction involves
instructional software packages to reduce the importance on the lecture portion of the course”.

“It is through this constant feedback and demand of the system that students maintained an active engagement in the course with
the assistance of the learning technology” the author said.
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This academic journal is helpful because it provides information on how technology can help increase the engagement of
students in class. The academic journal also provides me with information on how students activeness increased due to
involvement of technology. This supports my point to prove because the author suggest that technology helps teachers specifically
professors that have large classrooms specifically in math. Technology helps in the way that it helps increase the interaction
between student and teacher.
This source also was based off specifically finding the purpose of technology in schools. Meaning that this source
provides statistics on how technology increased student engagement and activeness in Math college classes. For example, through
having lectures online, test and quizzes this allowed for during class professors did not only have to explain a lecture. Instead
students should of came to class knowing the material and therefore the learning in class would be application, this increased
student engagement because it made class not as boring.
In this specific research project the student activeness in classes increased, because through the use of technology students
would be able to email their professors when they needed help instead of having to wait until the next class. Also besides student
activeness increasing from the ability to interact with the professor more, the students math quizzes, homework, and test were also
all online. This allowed for students to complete their work on their own time before the deadline instead of forced to take it at a
certain time. Overall technology increased the students activeness because of how convenient life was with technology.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
The author proclaims, “Technology becomes a part of human being’s life and affects people’s daily life”.

As technology continues to affect our society the author provides insight to skills needed for future generations: “Although there
are a great amount of different jobs requiring different professional skills, common skills can be found from these different realms”.

For the world of technology two skills the author states are “computational thinking, and new-media” these skills include knowing
programs and software as well knowing how to talk to others using technology example social media.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This academic journal provides specific skills needed for the current generation in order to obtain a job in the future. The
article includes 8 possible skills bosses and jobs would be looking for in the future. Such skills includes computation thinking,
new-media literacy, sense-making, learning the three intelligences, design mindset, adaptive and critical thinking, the ability to
work in a multicultural society, and lastly how well one deals with cognitive load. Along with each of these skills the article also
provides specific information on what each of the following skills are in detail.
This journal also provides reasoning behind how technology should be used and implies how we as a society may have
been using it differently. For example the article provides information about how computers are only meant to portray what our
brain are thinking. The computer cannot be our brain, no matter how advance technology gets it would be useless without our
thoughts in our brain.
This journal is a recent article released in 2017 meaning that the information and example in this article are relevant still
today. For example, in the journal for providing relevant examples to how the skills needed are related to technology it gave
examples to social media for communications. This is important because now everything is revolved around social media, news,
lives, etc. With this being said this also causes our human face to face communication to suffer, with this being said like I stated
before the article also provides a section about how cross-cultural communication. Meaning that in the future it will still be
important to know how to communicate face to face especially with other ethnicities and race as well as knowing how to
communicate with the world through technology and sources like social media.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
The author proclaims, “Some people say we’ve already passed the tipping point where technology will be smarter than us and a
lot of people say that using technology has already affected their memory and concentration”

While the author was explaining their claim, they began to define Humanity and upon finding a definition they found a term called
Humanity Plus which is, “It’s an international nongovernmental organization which advocates the use of emerging technologies to
enhance our capabilities”.

Pertaining to the future, the author was against Bill Gates statement about the future and technology: “I was quite shocked when I
heard Bill Gates just a couple of months ago say that if you have high school or lower education you will be replaced by artificial
intelligence in our lifetimes”.
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This video was a helpful source because at the start it begins by explaining how technology is growing at a fast pace,
some may say too fast that eventually it will be smarter than us humans. The author argued that we could say that this is a good
thing, though is it really? Throughout the author’s presentation the main point was that we need to control technology to where we
can use it to develop our minds not harm it. The video shows that the route we are currently heading in would lead to humans
harming their brains. Throughout the author’s presentation they were for the fact that technology has been harming the brain more
than helping. Though this does not mean that the author thought that technology should be banished, they believed that technology
can be super beneficial to humans. Though we as a community would need to relook the value of technology and asses what parts
of it were harmful. We would do this by relating technology to the brain and seeing how it affects the brain and reworking from
there.
The author in the video also provided scientific experiments of how our brains works, and how it reacts to technology.
One of these experiments were based off rats. It consisted of 3 groups of rats, 1 being forced to run on a treadmill, another having
the treadmill in the rat’s room and the rat being able to choose if they wanted to run or not and the last group of rats being
confined in a small space being forced to exercise as well. The result was that the two rat groups of which were forced to exercise
got their nutrients needed , though the group that choose if they wanted to exercise got their nutrients needed as well as had other
effects on their brain.

Point that this Source/Information Proves: #4 Technology has made humans dumber
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
Nicholas Carr explains how as humans spend more time online their attention span decreases: “The deep reading that used to
come naturally has become a struggle. I think I know what’s going on. For more than a decade now, I’ve been spending a lot of time
online, searching and surfing and sometimes adding to the great database of the internet.

While talking about how helpful the internet can be the author also begins to share the negative impacts: “But that boon comes at a
price. As the media theorist Marshall McLuhan pointed out in the 1960s, media are not just passive channels of information. They
supply the stuff of thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my
capacity for concentration and contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly
moving stream of particles.
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This article provides specific information about how technology is shortening the attention span of humans, specifically
when reading. There has been cases where writers who for a decade have been receiving their information from the internet has
begun to see cases where they cannot stay focus when reading a hard copy book any more. The reasoning behind this is because
what the internet provides is quick information through simple google searches. So as we continue to use the internet more our
minds become accustomed to this way of receiving information leading to us being unable to stay focused when reading long
articles. The article provide evidence to how our mind now, when reading online will have trouble staying focused on three page
articles, leading to us skimming for information. With technology shortening our attention span to books, this will cause problems
in the future because if this continues soon our minds will be unable to process a lot of information and we will be unable to
deeply think about information we read. This will correspond to the type of writing that we will see in the future, it will transform
into a more basic form of writing.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
The author introduces an article that speaks about the positive and negative impacts of technology on students: “According to the
authors, while computers hold promise for positive outcomes in learning and development, they also can have a negative impact
on the health and social development of learners who spend large amounts of time in front of the screen and are at increasing risk
for obesity, repetitive strain injuries, stunted social development, and clinical depression.”

Disabilitated students will always have trouble catching up to students, “Instructional technology may present barriers to learning
that nurse educators do not consider because it has features not accessible by students with disabilities.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

The article provides how technology has the possibility to have positive outcomes though it also has the possibility for negative
outcomes, it all just depends on how we use it. The article provided specific examples on the current negative outcomes if the
person spends a lot of time in front of their computer it affects their health and social development, they are also at a higher risk
for obesity, repetitive strain injuries, stunted social development, and clinical depression. The author also introduced another
interesting topic, the use of technology to assist people with disabilities so they can catch up or learn at the same pace as students.
They say how technology would be able to allow for the students to catch up while also allowing for the students to show what
they know and to learn more academically. Lastly the article provides an educated guess on how as technology is more spread out
throughout school, more accepted, and used more there will be be of great help, though the only problem is this depends on how
the technology is presented and that relies on the teachers and the instructors to decide.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
The author introduces the fact on how hybrid learning may be the best way of learning with technology, “Other formats of cyber
learning contain a mixture of what is referred to as hybrid courses. These courses are offered in a percentage of time spent in face-
to-face contact with the instructor and another percentage of class time spent in the cyberspace classroom. Combining these two
attributes gives the student the best of both worlds in which to grow academically”

The author states the greatest advantage to online learning: “The attribute of convenience is cited as the foremost
advantage to online learning. Students are finding themselves in situations in which they would rather choose the convenience of
online learning over the face time required of the brick and mortar classroom.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
The article provides both positives and negatives to online learning compared to regular classroom education. It states the
advantages of online learning include convenience, participation, Hybrid Courses, and cost efficient for the
universities.Convenience allows for the students to be flexible with their schedules and decide when they want to learn and not
start at the same time everyday. Study shows that for participation students who seem to be quiet inside the classroom will be
more likely to talk and participate in online courses. For Hybrid courses, this allows for teachers and professors to divide their
learning to allow for them to make the classroom experience interesting for their students by assigning all the notes for online
homework and in class they would work on the hands on part or basically not rely on lecturing. Lastly online classes are cost
efficient for universities allowing them to still generate revenue for online learning.
For the negatives they consist of online access, course design, and face to face time. For online access, the limitation for online
courses is internet, therefore those that can’t have internet because of economic reason or logistics reason would be at a
disadvantage. For course design, online courses are difficult to set up to where they are able to fit students way of learning. This is
because online learning has a different way to teaching, therefore teachers of online courses would need to know the material and
know how to design their class to fit how students learn online. Lastly lack of face to face time with teachers, this is important
because the students can see what they are learning compared to when looking at their 2d screens. Another problem with lack of
face to face time is that students online will work at their own pace so if students learn slowly they won’t know if they are falling
behind or not.

_________________________________________________________________________________________
Point that this Source/Information Proves: #1: Technology positively impacted humans by providing new freedoms and #2:
Technology has introduced new job opportunities.
Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
The author introduces the fact that technology’s positive is its way to connect us to others: “In a sense, that’s what technology has
always done. That’s true with planes, trains and automobiles. And that’s true with smartphones, social networks and search
engines. They, and other technologies, connect us to people who are not with us, geographically or physically, and make us feel a
little less alone in this big confusing world.”

The author uses pictures as a positive to technology, “We now live in an era when, thanks to technology, we can relive countless
moments with the people we love after they’re gone or far away.”

In the future the author argues that driverless cars would have an overall positive impact, “Finding parking may become a thing of
the past (as will parking tickets). Driving time may be reclaimed for more productive or enjoyable activities, like watching
movies, exercising or sleeping.”
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
The article provides insightful positives that technology currently has and can have in the future. The main positive point that the
article was mentioning was that technology allows humans to stay connected to their peers, in addition to this it allows them to
still feel connected to those who are deceased. One example that the source provided would be twitter and how even after the
tweeter dies they are still able to see their post after for nostalgic purposes. Technology also connects us to those who are dead
through pictures. This is important because before people would post a picture in their house after they died as a way of one last
memory of them, though now it is better because of pictures through our phones. This is better than before because of how easy it
is to take pictures on our phones humans now have hundreds of memories with their loved ones that they can go back and relive
whenever they want to.
The second positive that this article stated was driverless cars. The article argues that driverless cars are going to have positives
that will outweigh the negatives. Such positives consist of making driving more enjoyable and roads can be used for better society
friendly things. Driving would be more enjoyable because the driver will not need to be stressed on finding parking or when they
would need to be driving instead they could relax, sleep, or watch t.v. Lastly, the roads being used for something else, roads can
be used to create new parks or new libraries, something that the public would use throughout their lives.
