Cultural Heritage Tourism Trails (Community-Based Tourism)


Case Study : Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu Darul Iman.

Introduction

This assignment in general requires the students to prepare a report on the findings on the existing
formation and presentation of current cultural and heritage assets in and surrounding the area of Kuala
Terengganu, Terengganu Darul Iman. Known for its vast and rich cultural and heritage activities, Kuala
Terengganu is one of the best case study compatible with the requirements of this assignment. The major
question to be solves is how the current settings of the so-called cultural heritage tourism product can be
made compatible with the demanding aspects from the tourism sector perspective.

In tourism system, the awareness and ability to analysis a critical thinking on the current issues and
problems related to the tourism sector is importance in developing the image of tourism itself. Students
should be well prepared in this discipline especially in analyzing the presentation of the tourism product
analysis of a town or city. Basic knowledge in the cultural heritage tourism theories, concepts and
elements are the essential tools to be utilized during the site visit and site investigation of the above
mentioned case study area.

Objectives

1. To develop a clear understanding on the applications of tourism in managing a tourism destination.


2. To expose the students with the current practices on the supply side of tourism especially in the
cultural heritage tourism segment.
3. To train students to become a critical observer and can rationalize the tourism planning issues and
problems.
4. To expose students on the real situation and problems currently exist in managing tourism in a fragile
and unique site.
5. To acquire and incorporate the Islamic perspective in the tourism sector applications and practices.

Tasks

In general, this assignment consists of two parts; 1) Site visit to the Cultural Heritage Tourism Trail and 2)
To produce a Cultural Heritage Tourism Study Report.

Among the factors that students need to study and define during the trip are as follows:
 The Cultural and Heritage Assets and Tourism Products setting in the study area.
 The Cultural and Heritage Tourism concepts and elements applied to the case study area.

The second task requires the students to produce a report which contains the expected outcome from the
visit among others the observation and general investigation on the presentation of the cultural heritage
tourism products compatibility based on the demand from the tourism sector.

Assessment

This is a GROUP assignment. Students are divided into 7 Groups with different assigned sites.
All groups are required to produce a report containing the general literature review on the tourism
definitions, principles, site profile/background and followed by the analysis and findings on the case study
area investigation and the potential recommendations on the product development towards the end of
the report.

Report assessment will be based on proper introduction, the report contents/substances, literature
review, critical analysis supported by diagrams and sketches, discussions, recommendations, conclusion
and bibliographies section.

This report writing assignment will carry 20% marks.

Instructions and Expected Output

 Use only A4 80gms plain paper. Any other quality papers can be used for supporting diagrams or
sketches.
 The final report orientation can be in portrait or landscape.
 The length of the report writing should ideally around 20 – 25 pages excluding tables, diagrams,
sketches, maps, appendices and bibliographies.
 Please use the standard format for the preparation of assignments / report applied by IIUM.
 The final produce of the report should be bound using Spiral Binding only, complete with the plastic
film cover/sheet at the front and the back of the report.
 Any used of Binding Tape or Stapler for the final bound report is not acceptable.

Submission & Presentation

 Submission date is scheduled to be on Thursday, 8th DECEMBER 2016 before 5.00 p.m.
 Any submission after the above mentioned hours is NOT accepted and considered FAILED TO SUBMIT.
 A Presentation Session by all group will be organized in a Seminar manner on the following week. Date
and Venue will be determined later.
