Everest for Ed
Ed Cappock died on 22nd October 2009, four days
before his 9th birthday. He had battled Leukaemia
for six years.

Working Together
Bristol Children’s Hospital is the only specialist centre in the region
and many children who are treated there come from many miles
away. Having to stay away from home, and sometimes having to try
and find a hotel to stay in near the hospital, adds significantly to the
stress of having a sick child, not to mention the cost.
Thankfully help is at hand. Since 2002
Ronald MacDonald House has provided
accommodation allowing families to stay
together at the dedicated house, just a
stone’s throw away from the Children’s
Hospital. The demand is so great
however that they had outgrown their

recognised the benefits of colour and arts
in creating a positive healing environment
and the Bristol Heart Institute is a great
example of this. The charity funded arts
programme there won the Building Better
Healthcare Arts Programme Award and
the building was commended in two other
categories of ‘Best Hospital Design’ and
‘Best Hospital Interior Design’.

arrived at the Bristol Heart Institute,
weary from years spent in various
hospitals and with little hope of recovery.

The Bright Ideas Competition was
launched to encourage innovative ideas
within our hospitals. The competition saw
a wide range of entries offering ideas that
would make a real difference to patients

grant of £170,000 to help convert a disused
bungalow on the site into five extra
bedrooms. Working together means that
we have been able to provide the facilities
needed to reduce stress and allow families
to stay together during treatment.

misunderstanding, lack of information or
simply a lack of awareness.

exciting technological solution to deliver

to overcome the geographical difficulties
of delivering teenager and young adults

It’s a first for the UK and the only other
comparison is in Australia; links have
already been established to share
ideas. The virtual platform will enable
patients to be registered with the
National Cancer Information Network,

We are also supporting the post of Bristol
Cancer Strategy Co-ordinator to help
develop the Bristol Cancer Strategy for
the promotion of cancer research and
improvement in clinical outcomes. Both
projects will make a difference to the
future of cancer care in Bristol and the
South West.

Ward 61 at the BHOC and so began
my journey of chemotherapy, blood
transfusions and a bone marrow
transplant. Throughout it all the
doctors and nurses were amazing.
Now, here I am 46 years old! I
support everyone at the BHOC with
all of my heart. Without them I don’t
know where I would be right now.
