ABSTRACT

The batik products are recognized as the original Malaysian products and the creative industries
sector that contribute to GDP (Growth Develop Profit). However, during the batik production
process is still inefficient and not environmentally friendly. The activities in this study include
several steps. Based on thesis title is Study and Analysis the Designing Process of Lean Thinking
on Value Stream Management in Small Service Batik Industry. The objective for this project is to
investigate toward the value added in manufacturing process and noted the data and also the last
objective propose the suitable facilities layout together with recommend the lean implementation
to the small batik industry. Lean is the technique, which is possible to improve service performance
at industry by looking and handling each of critical, also capable to support technical staff if lack
in operating tools. First, identify the five principle of lean thinking that introduced by Japan
committee, Toyota Production System (TPS) which is 1) Identify customer and what they value
2) Map the value stream 3) Create flow to customer by eliminate waste 4) Establish pull based on
customer demand 5) Pursue perfection. Second, the research is continued by use the lean tools in
order to identify the value in process flow in industry. There are several type of lean tools, but in
this study value stream mapping (VSM) has been choose as lean tools because it can be related
and full filled with five principle of lean thinking. Value stream mapping has two stage which is
current and future map. During the mapping the process the waste founded based on seven
common waste activity within industry is defect, overproduction, transportation, waiting,
inventory, motion and processing. Last, the research try to come out the suitable facilities layout
using solid work design based on founded waste and another references to achieve the all objective
of this project. Thus, the design is very useful to improve the process flow in small batik industry.
