History and background of the business

Hog raising or farming in the Philippines has been a profitable business for

Filipinos through the decades. Despite the challenges facing the swine industry, still

many people are venturing into this enterprise. As of December 2017, there are 430

registered hog farms in the Philippines according to the Bureau of Animal Industry. Hog

or swine industry is the second largest contributor to the total value of the country’s

agriculture coming in next to the rice. As of January 1, 2018, around 16.76% of the total

swine inventory was from Central Luzon as per the Livestock and Poultry Statistics

Division of the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Pork is the meat from hogs, or domestic swine. It is the number one most

consumed meat worldwide. It is one of the oldest forms of livestock, having been

domesticated as early as 7000 BC in the Middle East. Pork is generally produced from

young animals weighing 175 to 240 pounds. Hogs are preserved and made into ham,

bacon and sausage.

Nature or kind of industry

NVA Hog Farm is engaged in an agricultural industry or also known as husbandry

or farming. Philippines is known primarily as an agricultural country and most citizens

still live in rural areas and support themselves through agriculture. The country's

agriculture sector is made up of 4 sub-sectors: farming, fisheries, livestock, and forestry.

Hog farming in the Philippines seem guaranteed for the next decade for those who want

to invest in modern pig production because demand is growing, in line with population

and income, and meat consumption is expected to grow in parallel. It is also the second

largest economic activity in the Philippines’ agricultural sector. Domestic pig production

has been rising in both backyards and modern commercial farms.

However, the development of agriculture spans thousands of years and has been

affected by human cultures, climate variations, and evolving technologies. Despite the

industry’s evolution over the centuries, all types of farming still rely on methods to

maintain environments conducive for raising domestic species.

Currently, there is a potential competitor that we strongly considered, which is the

Monterey Food Corporation because it is renowned and trusted producer of superior

quality meat products. However, we will not let this competitiveness stifle our

enthusiasm. Whether it be a known corporation such as Monterey or a regional-up-comer,

the agricultural industry is rife with opportunities for investment.

Nemuel Aguilar is the owner of NVA Hog Farm who acquired several trainings

and seminars with regards to establishing a hog farm.
