Where do top movies (movie is the

like X-Men and Pirates of the Caribbean
come from? They usually come from
Hollywood – the film capital of the USA.
Hollywood’s film studios make about 500
films a year and they make all kinds of
films. It’s easy to see a film in Hollywood;
there are several cinemas on Hollywood
Boulevard. But it’s difficult to find a
famous actor in Hollywood because film stars don’t live there. They often have veryy
large houses in Beverly Hills, about 3km away.
On the other side of the world, Mumbai is India’s film capital. The Indian film
industry, or ‘Bollywood’, makes about 1,000 films a year and about 14 million
people go to the cinema to watch these films every day in India. The nickname
Bollywood comes from the city of Bombay (which is now called Mumbai) and
Hollywood. Bollywood films are usually musicals with a lot of dancing and
romance.

British sporting events: The Boat Race

Every year, in spring, there is a famous boat race on the river Thames in London. About 250 000 people go to the
river and watch it. Millions of people around the world watch it on TV. The Boat Race is sometimes called the
Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and it’s a rowing race between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
The rowers travel 6.8 kilometres and the race usually takes between 16 and 20 minutes.
There are eight rowers in each boat and they’re all big, heavy men. There’s also a cox in the boat, who doesn’t row.
The cox must be a very light person, so it’s sometimes a woman. She sits at the back of the boat and steers it. She
also shouts at the rowers to make them go faster. All the people in the crews or rowing teams are students at the
universities. The Cambridge crew wear light blue and the Oxford crew wear dark blue.
Although the Boat Race is a famous British sporting event, a lot of the rowers are not British. In 2014, for example,
many rowers were from other countries including the USA, Germany and Australia.
Why are people interested in a race between two university boat crews? People like it because it’s free. You don’t need
a ticket. And it’s a fun day out near the river. People also like it because it’s a very old tradition. The first Oxford and
Cambridge Boat Race began on the Thames near Oxford in 1829.

Text type: A personal profile

TASK Write a personal profile. Follow the steps below.

1 READ THE MODEL Text

1 Read the Model Text. What are the negative things about Katie?

My Best Friend by Naomi

My best friend is Katie. She’s 15 years old and she’s tall
with brown eyes and long, dark hair. We chat online every
day and I usually go to her flat after school. We like talking
about films and clothes. We love listening to music on her
mp4 player. The Arctic Monkeys are our favourite group.
Katie is friendly, funny and energetic. She’s very good at
maths, art and music. She loves drawing and painting.
At the moment, she’s painting trees and flowers on
the walls of her room. I enjoy spending time with her.
We often do our homework together.
When I struggle with maths, she helps me.
But Katie isn’t perfect. She is sometimes lazy and
she doesn’t like cleaning or washing up. Her room is
always untidy, too. But I think Katie is great. I’m never
bored when I’m with her.
