Project Title English Teaching Assistant

Abstract/Summary With an emphasis on embracing difference as a conduit for intercultural communication, I will encourage oration
of Proposal and critical thinking in my students learning English. Being an ETA in Turkey would provide a tremendous
experience as I absorb cultural difference and help Turkish students reconsider how they understand the U.S. Using
English as a portal to global engagement, with the Fulbright I hope to become an agent of change promoting
mutual understanding and friendship between our countries.

Host Country With eight years of experience as a debater, I will establish an informal speech and debate club while working as an
Engagement ETA. This will introduce Turkish students to previously unknown facets of American culture, literature, and politics,
while also reshaping how I conceive and understand Turkey and its history. The club is practical: students will learn
how to speak with con dence and poise, thinking critically but not blindly, to prepare them for successful careers
both in Turkey and elsewhere.

Plans Upon Return Upon returning to the U.S., I hope to enroll in a doctorate program for history, with an emphasis on late Ottoman
To U.S. history and British imperial history. Ultimately, I aspire to write books—of poetry, history, and criticism—and teach
students about the wider world. An ETA in Turkey will provide me with valuable insight into how the past has
affected the present. Immersion will breed sensitivity and nuance to the realities of life, traits vital in a good
storyteller concerned with history.
