Welcome to the GCSE Art exam

JANUARY 2018
At this point in the course.......
• You should now be completing 60% of your overall grade
(coursework.) This will now be completed in extra after school
sessions and EBX time. I will support you with these elements
and will help you finish off and mount your work. Think of
anything you do now as boosting your grade chances.

• You will have to now attend an after school session regularly –

wood cut print - Chess hat and I want to give you all a tutorial
just to check the coursework so far. Some of you also want /
need to work on an extension task which is an etching for the
Natural Forms project.

• The introduction of the exam now means that at times you will
be juggling tasks and time!!!!!!
So what next????
• The other 40% is your exam which is prep work and a final piece which will take
place over 10 hours in your art room.

• The exam time sessions is still to be decided..

• You will have a choice of questions that you can look at and you need to pick one
to work on over four ish months.

• In lessons and homework - you will be preparing for this exam and final piece.
You will be expected to use Art Rooms at dinner or after school to get this
completed.

• The examination is important and makes a difference to your grade!

• Your exam prep work will have to be completed for the first hour of the exam
sessions – you will not be able to add to this – what you do is what will be
marked!!!
Exam
In the exam you will create your
final piece that links with the
question you have chosen.
The more you put into the
prep the easier the exam
will be! There will be no
surprises and you will take
it on confidently!
Your work will be marked according to how well you have shown
evidence of:-

 Developing ideas through investigations

 Refining ideas through experimenting

 Recording ideas, observations and insights

 Presenting a personal, informed and

meaningful response.

04 - Materials.
05 - Light and dark.
06 - In a different way.
07 - Connections.
01 - Human Figure.
Many artists, craftspeople and designers are inspired by the human figure. Pablo Picasso depicted
the human figure in many different styles. Jaume Plensa’s site-specific sculptures show the human
figure in a thoughtful manner. Graphic illustrator Derek Gores uses magazine paper to create
collaged portraits. The works of photographer Alexander Yakovlev and ceramicist Karen Elizabeth
Vaughan capture dancers in motion. Raija Jokinen portrays everyday life and human emotion in her
textile sculptures.
• Investigate appropriate sources and create your own work in response to Human figure.

02 - Telling Stories.
Artists, craftspeople and designers have often been inspired by stories. Painter and craftsperson
Marc Chagall illustrated stories from Russian folklore. Film maker and animator Tim Burton has
directed dark, gothic and eccentric fantasy films based on classic children’s stories. Photographer
Kirsty Mitchell has created a photo book called ‘Wonderland’ inspired by stories from her childhood.
Julia Feld makes illustrated ceramic vessels and Faith Ringgold has produced story quilts.
• Investigate appropriate sources and produce your own work in response to Telling stories.

03 - In the news. World events, news and media reporting often inspire artists, craftspeople and
designers. Textile artist Kirsty Whitlock takes ideas from newspaper headlines. Hannah Höch made
photomontages from newspaper text and images that recorded events of the time. Nam June Paik
made video installations using radios and televisions which explore the influence of mass media
news reporting. Graphic designer Shepard Fairey documents news events through his poster
designs and photographer Roshini Kempadoo creates photographic installations that interpret
historical and contemporary news events.
• Research appropriate sources and create your own work based on In the news.
04 - Materials.
Many artists, craftspeople and designers use a range of materials and working
processes. Mixed media artist Jason Twiggy Lott recycles discarded materials to produce
work related to reliquaries and memories. Susan Lenart Kazmer combines precious and
recycled materials in her symbolic jewellery and talismans. Photographer Paul Kenny
collects material from the landscape to create photographic journals in his studio. Textile
artist Lucy Brown uses a range of materials and techniques to create installations and
designer Benjamin Rollins Caldwell uses unconventional materials to construct unique
furniture.
• Investigate appropriate sources and create your own work in response to Materials.

05 - Light and dark.

Many artists, craftspeople and designers use light and dark as an important feature in
their work. David Stanley makes dramatic use of light and dark in his atmospheric
landscape paintings. Eva Rothschild has constructed dark, abstract sculptures set in
brightly lit white spaces and photographer Michael Levin uses light and dark to help
create the sense of space in his studies of environments. Ceramicist Gordon Baldwin
creates vessels which have light and dark surfaces. Emily Hogarth crafts intricate paper-
cuts and Richard Sweeney examines the effects of light and dark created through paper
folding.
• Investigate appropriate sources and create your own work in response to Light and
dark.
06 - In a different way.
Artists, craftspeople and designers often present everyday subjects in a way that is
different and intended to show another point of view. Claes Oldenburg has presented
scaled-up everyday objects in a different way and Cristina Troufa uses negative space in
her paintings to express ideas about her inner feelings. Sandra Backlund designs and
makes sculptural knitwear to show how garments can be modelled in a different way and
ceramicist Hennie Meyer creates highly imaginative individual teapots. Designer Ilvy
Jacobs reinvents and transforms simple packaging. Deckstool use old skateboards to
create innovative furniture.

• Investigate appropriate sources and produce your own work based on:
EITHER
(a) Magnify / Miniaturise / Modify OR (b) The way I see it

07 - Connections.
The theme Connections can be interpreted in many ways. Refer to appropriate sources
and develop your own interpretation of Connections, or respond to one of the following:

• (a) Connections between any of the formal elements.

• (b) Connections between the past and the present.

• (c) ‘Cultured Connections’: a commission requiring fashion accessory designs for a

new multicultural retail outlet.

Primary Tasks
• Most of you have seen the examination paper and by
now you should have decided on a question - or by
the end of this lesson!
• You will discuss options with your teacher and you
should now begin to start work.
• You have between now and April -ish to produce all
the preparatory work.
• You would be best served researching suitable artists
for ideas and technique possibilities first. This will
help you formulate your own approach and decide
upon the visual information be it drawings,
photographs or collected imagery.

EXAM SESSION - TBA
12/1/18 - First lesson – Today
Mind Map and research sheets (AO1)
Collect keywords inspired by your chosen question and explore as many themes as
possible. What are your ideas? Record them in a Mind Map – If you prefer write down
in sentences your initial ideas. No idea is a bad idea? Do this on a piece of A3 paper as
nearly as possible.

Start to create 2 research sheets for 2-4 different Artists linked to your chosen theme.
Re-read the exam question for Artist ideas. I will also place this Powerpoint on the
school Web Site and on shared area under Art and Design, Year 11, GCSE Exam 2017
18.

8 / 7 level work – complete creative and original research sheets on another 2 Artists
relevant to your chosen theme. Add detailed drawings in the style of the Artist, take
your own photographs of Primary research linked to your theme.
Write in detail how the Artist creates their work, what they are inspired by, what
your opinions of the work are and how you could use these techniques in your work.

HOMEWORK
Collect information to draw from in the next lessons and produce at least one detailed
study at home linked to your chosen theme . Photographs would also be acceptable.
However, I want one accurate study producing. You don’t need to bring in a lot. Just
one item will do although the more the better.
Experimenting with media and developing ideas
(AO2, AO3)
Explore your initial ideas, techniques and styles of Art,
experimenting with a variety of media.

Create 2 different development pieces of work inspired by the Artists

you have looked at.
Try out the techniques, styles and materials that they use.
Annotate your work –explain the different techniques and
materials you have used. ANAYLYSE the work of the Artists you have studied and
explain how you have used their work to inspire you. Consider content, context, mood,
composition, media and techniques used.
8 / 7 level work – Ensure you have skilfully used at
least 6 different types of materials and media (e.g. paint, pencil, watercolour, oil
pastel, college). You could try some 3D sculpture, include textiles or use your own
photography in your Art work. Consider surface pattern, texture and layering.
Annotate your
work in detail, including your own opinions of your work and
your thoughts on how your project will progress.
What interests you about this topic? How might you use these techniques /
materials in your Final piece?

Homework – personal targets

Developing ideas for your final piece and evaluating what you have done so
far (AO3, AO4)

Develop your ideas further. Explore possible techniques and materials you
could use – 2D, 3D, mixed media, print. Plan the materials, techniques and
composition. Make a clear plan/diagram of 2 or more design ideas before your
10 hour Exam.
Annotate your DESIGN IDEA – how does it link to your artist?
*by this stage you should have at least 5 sheets complete*

8/ 7 level work – Complete 4 or more creative and original design ideas for
your Final Piece, testing media, compositions and techniques. Annotate your
work in detail, explaining the links to the Artists and Exam question you
chose to develop.

Homework – Complete at least 2 Final Piece Design Ideas and annotate the
materials, techniques, composition and inspiration behind them.
Prepare everything you need for the 10 hour Exam.
