ISM Code is International Safety Management Code.

The purpose of this Code is to provide an

international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
The Code establishes safety-management objectives and requires a safety management system (SMS)
to be established by "the Company", which is defined as the shipowner or any person, such as the
manager or bareboat charterer, who has assumed responsibility for operating the ship. With this Code
every single thing that related to the operation of the ship must be following the rules. The rules will
guide the company to make sure there is no accident, zero fatality and etc. If the company is following
the ISM Code there must be a certifcation from the ISM Code for the company. This certificated is
become a prove that the company is following the ISM Code. Many company in Indonesia are following
the ISM Code. It makes the company is more trustable because they have the certification from The ISM
Code.

2. Some benefit will received by the company because they implement the ISM Code many of
rules and regulation for the safety and the environmental regulated in that Code. The ISM Code
it is not regulate about the ship but also regulate for the crew that will work on the ship. This
can be happen because STCW is under the ISM Code. If the company use the ISM Code so the
company will be get a good crew because the crew must be have a high standart such as
qualified as a ship crew based on background that they have, the crew should be certified
because before they become a ship crew they must be take a course and pass the test. If they
are past the test they can qualify as a certified crew, and the last one the crew should be have
a good healthy record based on nasiona and international standart. For the ship certification
ther e are some certification such as registration certificate, international tonnage certificatem,
civil liability certificate, safety radio certificate, hull and machinery certificate, cargo gear
certificate and many more. We take some certificate for example that will have benefit for the
company such as hull and machinery and registration certificate. For the registration certificate
the company ship that has been registered to this certification will be registered as the ship
under the ISM Code, so the ship can go to any port or flag state that follow the ISM Code easily
with the permission from the flag state or port state. This can be so easy because the port state
no need to check all of the requirement that ship have because the ship must be have the same
 standart with the port state standart because both of them are following the ISM Code. For the
hull and machinery certificate can give benefit to the company because the company’s ship will
have hull and machinery with international standart. If it following and implementing the
international standart it will more easier to get the pemission if the ship want to sail from one
country to another country. Ship that following teh ISM Code will be more safer because the
code is to make sure there are no accident when the ship is sealing so the ship will be build
under a high standart of safety. The ship company should be easier to get the insurance because
the ship use the international standart and this code is under the IMO. Because of the ship and
the crew is following the ISM Code so the company wouldn’t be worry for the environmental
danger because the ship has an International standart for the environmental safety and the
crew have awareness to the environmental because the crew is qualified and certified.

3. In the company that a said before in number 1 i dont get many information for what certificate
that they have because they dont attach it in the website. They just say they are following the
ISM Code without say what certificated that they have. But when i read in the aother website
that talked about ISM Code there are some certification from the ISM Code that will received
by the company such as :

 Regristation Cretificate

Registration certificate is registration for the company and the ship that follow the ISM Code.
This certificate is to prove the company and the ship that use high standart of safety procedure
in building and in the operation. If they are registered as the company and ship that follow the
ISM Code it will be have more trust from the prospective buyer because it follow the safety
regulation that apply in international scala. The ship can be easier get the insurance because
the insurance company is trust to the shipping company because the ship is use the
international safety standart so the possibility accident happen is decrease.

 International Tonnage Certificate

This certificate is to prove that ship will not carrying more than the maximum requirement of
tonnage that ship can carry. This certificate is to make sure the ship will be operate in the safe
way because the ISM code ant zero fatality or zero accident in the operation.

 Safe Mannning Certificate

This certification for the crew. Ship crew that work in the company that follow the ISM Code will
get many certificate that related with the safety and the environmental. The crew should be care
about safety in the operation and environental friendly. The company will be get the benefit
because the crew will be have a high standart for safety and environmental so the crew can
qualify ad qualified ship crew.

 Civil Liability Certificate

 This certificate is to make prove the company or owner that they are following the CLC
Convention that talked about oil spill. It will guarantee that ship owner or the company will be
pay tax if there are any accident that make an oil spill.

 Safety Radio Certificate

If the ship have this certificate so the radio communication that implemeted in the ship is used
the international standart so the ship is fullfill the safety radio requierment internationally.
Because of that thing the ship can sail internationally.

 Safety Equipment Certificate

The certificate is to prove that the safety equipment that ship carry for the crew and passengers
are in the international standart so if the ship is sailing from the one country to another country
and accident happen in the voyage it will more safer for the crew and passengers because all
of the equiepment is in international standart.

 Safety Construction Certificate

This certificate is to prove the ship construction is build under the international standart so it is
make the construction more stronger and safer because it’s follow the international standart
that have a high standart for the safety and environmental.

 Fitnnes Certificate

Fitness certificate is certificate for ship that make sure the ship in on the good condition all of
the time that it operate. The fitness of the ship can be controlled by the maintenance. The
maintenance will be checked all of items in the ship with the international standart that have a
high standart for safety and the environmenta.

 Load Line Certificate

Loaline certificate is to prove the ship is operate in the safe way and follow the international
load line regulation. If the ship have this certificate so it will be operate in the safe way and safe
the environmental.

 Cargo gear Certificate

This certificate is ti make sure the cargo handling equipment is in internaional standart. The
standart is should be safe for the worker and the environmental in the operation,

 Hull & Machinery Certificate

This certificate is to prove the ship hull and all of the machinery inside it is build under the
international standart so it is make the hull and all of the machinery more stronger and safer
because it’s follow the international standart that have a high standart for the safety and
environmental.

 Safety Management Certificate

This certificate is to prove the company is implemented the saftey management to make sure
all of the ship that they have is safe to operate. They will be manage the maintenance of the
ship so it will make the ship become more safe to operate because the maintenance is to check
the condition of the ships are they feasible to operate or not. So this certificate is to prove the
ship is operate in safe way and environmental friendly,
