Attendance
The following Directors were present: Kathy Baldwin, Guy Balok, Sandy Nolan, Peggy Zonca, Miechael Baynes
and Ann Creviston. Also present was Emily Lutzenkirchen, Publications & Records Assistant. Joe Poma, the Property
Manager, was excused.
Due to the Clubhouse renovations there was no public meeting in the month of September. The following are Committee
meeting minute approvals.
The following minutes were approved during Zonca, to accept the Grounds Committee report dated
the Executive Board meeting: September 10, 2018. All in favor. Motion passed.

1. Renovation Update: Demolition is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 10th. All Clubhouse traffic will be re-
routed. Front doors will remain locked. All traffic in and out will go through side doors. Main Lounge and Library will be
closed. Kitchen, Billiards, and Fitness will have limited access.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. Joel announced that all courts are covered for Herald delivery this month.
2. Diane reported for the sub-committee on the trash education investigation. Wayne County’s Resource Recovery Coordina-
tor, John Demerjian, explained that a cardboard only policy for recycling is an individual company policy and not a Wayne
County policy as other companies do pick up and recycle products in Wayne County. Based on Mr. Demerjian’s information,
the sub-committee proposes that the Liaison Committee recommend to the Board that management investigates other waste
collection companies for recycling service with careful negotiation of details in a contract.
3. Kathy Baldwin explained that the current contract is still in effect and may be a three year contract. She will look into the
need for three pickups per week with just cardboard.
4. Discussion of concerns that companies do not actually recycle, the limited access to recycling locations, and the diminish-
ing state of the recycling industry were discussed. Diane explained that the sub-committee’s position is that the need for
recycling remains and our community has demonstrated strong interest. The recommendation is for the Board to authorize
an investigation rather than accept that we cannot have recycling of more than just cardboard. Members voted to accept the
sub-committee’s proposal.
5. The meeting was adjourned for all to enjoy our annual potluck.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD: That the Board authorize management to investigate waste collection compa-
nies that recycle a wider range of recyclables than Waste Management does and specifically negotiate dates of pick up and what is
recycled.

1. Discussed tree replacement. We purchased shade and ornamental trees (small) from Watershed Council for woods. We
discussed using some of these trees to plant in place of trees that have been removed around the property.
2. We are still removing buckthorn and clearing out to plant some trees in the woods.
3. Would like to hire Davey Tree for one day to remove buckthorn from woods, especially those with berries.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD: Hire Davey tree for one day to remove buckthorn from woods.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. The pools are closed and drained. Furniture has been stored. Several residents have expressed their desire to have the pool
remain open for a period after Labor Day. This possibility will be addressed in more detail at the April meeting next year. It is
dependent on availability of lifeguards, the budget for heating the pool and salary for lifeguards.
2. The lifeguards did a great job this year. We are hoping that they will return for next season.
3. Pool Closing Party was on September 2nd. There was a huge turnout and an abundance of delicious food.
4. The Adult Christmas Party will not be held this year due to the ongoing Clubhouse renovations.
5. A slow drain issue in the ladies locker room is being worked on.
6. The Pool Committee Appreciation lunch/dinner will be held at a later date to be determined.

at these functions. All of you helped to make this year fun and a success. See you next year!***

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:
1. Discussed adding hydrangeas to east side of 8 Mile entrance landscaping to match west side of entrance's landscaping. Com-
mittee voted approval.
2. Annuals to be removed after first frost. Tall grasses trim back in March.
3. Diane Pittaway has two oak saplings she would like to plant in areas around Pond Court where there are clusters of trees that
have some dead trees in them. One is between the court's parking lot and Park Place maintenance building close to Lake
Success Drive, the second cluster is behind Pond Court up towards building 12 of Richards Court. Miss Dig should be called
as this second area is heavily traversed with underground utilities.
4. The Highland Lakes Master Plan shows a landscape cluster at the end of Dearborn court where Russ Fogg Drive comes into
Silver Spring Drive. Discussed looking into this further.
5. A list of dead trees needing removal is maintained by the property manager, including dead branches. Be sure to call in any
in your area.
7. Valiant Court planting island is scheduled for clearance when maintenance can work it in.
8. Shrub removal form is in the September Herald. Requests must be in by October 1st.
9. Co-Owners with common buckthorn in and around their grounds should call in a work order to have it removed. Removal
of this invasive plant is funded to start in October.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH INVASIVE SPECIES?
According to the Midwest Invasive Plant Network, invasive plants can affect
your ability to enjoy natural areas, parks, and campgrounds. Hikers, cyclists, and
horseback riders all enjoy well-maintained trails, and invasive plants can grow over
trails to the point that the path cannot be followed or can be difficult to navigate.
Invasive plants can also increase the risk of flooding and soil erosion leading to cloudy
water, lower water quality, and silted spawning beds.
Buckthorn thicket
Well, if you can, take a moment and walk into our woods at Curtis Lake aka
Silver Springs Lake. One section has had the buckthorn removed, and is now
drastically in two years! A path has been created and you can now walk where once
the thicket of buckthorn was. Native plants are growing and although most were

planted, a few were still able to survive the buckthorn invasion. We planted cup plant,
Silphium perfoliatum, which
attracted a female monarch,
Danaus plexippus, and she
was able to lay her eggs on
the swamp milkweed,
Asclepias incarnata, that had
been growing naturally near
the water. Numerous
swallowtails, Papilionidae,
were also seen this year
enjoying nectar as well. The
spring will be very exciting next
year when the first ephemerals
will arrive!

Social Media – Important Notifications
Social media has many benefits; it allows you to maintain connections with friends, make new contacts,
build support networks, express yourself and share your interests. However, information should be
shared with caution to protect yourself and your family. Here are some tips for social media safety:
• Your personal information should be just that, personal. As hackers become more and more
sophisticated, identity theft becomes a greater risk and while it may be tempting to post pictures
of your fabulous vacation, bear in mind that you’re also letting others know you’re away from
home, making you vulnerable to a break in.
• Use privacy and security settings to limit who can see what you share online. You wouldn’t give
details of your private life to complete strangers in person, so don’t do it online either.
• Remember that what you post online will stay online, so consider the long-term consequences.
Could your social media presence prevent you from securing a job in the future? Would you
want your coworkers, friends, and relative to see this side of you? Remember, the posts you
make and then delete can most often be retrieved days, months, and even years later.
• Let your social network know your boundaries. For example, if you don’t want images of
yourself or your children posted online, let your friends and family members know.
• Know what to do if someone is making you feel unsafe online. Some steps you can take include
blocking the offender, reporting the person to the site administrator and removing him or her from
your friends list.
• Social media doesn’t just spread information, it can also spread viruses and other risks to your
media device. Defend your system(s) by using the latest security software and web browser and
installing updates regularly.
• Protect your social media accounts by using password best practices. Long combinations of
letters, numbers and symbols are the most secure, and separate passwords should be used for each
account.
Highland Lakes Condominiums has chosen to use a Dedicated Notification Service called One Call Now
for our resident notification system. This dedicated system has proven both reliable and unique to us.
Currently the staff has entered all telephone numbers that are on file and notifications are sent out in
English using our general business number, 248-349-4006. If you use the smart phone application, you
can opt in to push text notifications to your phone and you can also opt in for email notifications.
We have chosen not to use Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, and Nextdoor as these Social Media sites
can be unreliable and cluttered, sometimes leaving important messages unread. Nixle was considered for
notifications, but was limited and too costly. We only use Facebook for general information.
Social Media can be used to stay up to date. The Chamber of Commerce uses Social Media as does our
local government. Have you thought to add the Northville Township App, available for smart phones
using the Google Play Store or iPhones App Store? Highland Lakes Condominiums uses Social Media to
keep its residents up to date. Both iPhone and Android users can download My Call Now to manage
their One Call Now account, which includes push notification by text messages, add additional phone
numbers, and add an email address for notification.

Marchelle Brotz (submitted by Marianne Brandt)
Recently I went to my neighbor’s condo, who is a lover of dogs,
and admired a picture hanging on her wall that a friend had just
given her. As I admired a picture of her dogs, which looked like a
photograph, I realized it was actually a painting and really
depicted the dogs well. She told me that a lady in Highland Lakes
painted it and I wanted to find out who she was. Lo and behold it
was Marchelle Brotz who I see three times a week at the
aquarobics class at the Highland Lakes Swimming pool. So I
thought it be a great idea to have our neighbors at Highland
Lakes meet a very talented lady.
(Both are rescue dogs, the one to the left is Heidi, a 11 yr old Toy Poodle mix
and the other one on the right is Missy, a 9 yr old Toy Poodle)
Marchelle studied Graphic Design at Lansing Community College but is a self-taught artist. She started out painting
portraits in oils when she was about 23, then moved to acrylics, then colored pencils and lately she has been using
pastels.
When looking at her pictures you can tell she loves capturing the souls of the animals, especially through their eyes. She
also teaches kids and adults as she loves sharing her passion of art with them.
She also tries to support animal shelters/rescues by providing gift certificates for a free animal portrait to help with their
fund raising. If a shelter recommends a person to her, 20% of the cost of the portrait will go back to the shelter.

Eight years ago, Marchelle’s accountant told her how his mom had passed away and they ended up throwing out bags of
yarn. So she decided to support upcycling and provide a website where people can list their new and used arts and craft
supplies, and created www.creative-resale.com. Listing items is free.
Besides drawing, she likes to experiment with different techniques and media. She also enjoys camping, swimming and
anything creative.
Marchelle and her husband have been married for 25 years and have lived in Highland Lakes for eight years. They have
five boys and 2 grandchildren, living in Michigan, California, Chicago and Missouri. Marchelle and her husband love
living at Highland Lakes. She says “Highland Lakes feels like living in a resort in the summer time.”
