Innovative Manufacturing and Extending Life of Railway Rolling Stock

Background
SMH Rail is Malaysia's largest privately owned rolling stock manufacturer and service provider. Established in Year
2000 to undertake railway engineering projects. Over the years, SMH Rail has acquired and developed its own local
engineering expertise and technology through strategic collaborations with its OEM partners. SMH Rail has
permanent presence in various overseas locations including India, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Thailand,
and Cambodia.

Track Record/Accomplishment

SMH Rail prides in itself in being the sole, local manufacturer of diesel electric locomotives in Malaysia. The rst
Malaysian made locomotive known as G10 was the product of SMH Rail. SMH Rail subsequently ventured into
overseas markets and secured locomotive remanufacturing works for the national railway operators of Tanzania
and Zambia. Currently, SMH Rail is one of the market leader in locomotive remanufacturing in the African region.

SMH Rail is also the service and maintenance provider of locomotives with extensive experience in the
maintenance, repair and overhaul works for Malaysia's national railway operator, KTMB for over a decade. SMH Rail
has invested in the modern faciity for its locomotive manufacturing plant to meet the local demand. Through its
research and development, SMH Rail has developed its own bogie and underframe that are fully compliant to
European crash standards. The design validation is endorsed by Prose of Switzerland.

SMH Rail's in-house research laboratory has played an instrumental role in offering solutions to customers facing
dif culty in procuring obsolete parts for their faulty electronic components. Our team has the capacity to re-
engineer and redesign the electrical components. Faulty and obsolete electrical components in locomotives, EMUs
can be recti ed and thus, prolonging the life of the assets.

In Malaysia, SMH Rail has established its name as the country's rst manufacturer and assembler of metro trains
under the MRT Line-1 project. Under the MRT Line-1 project, SMH Rail has delivered 58 train sets (232 cars) at its
internationally certi ed electric train manufacturing facility located approximately 50km from the capital city, Kuala
Lumpur. The facility is the only facility outside Europe to have been certi ed by Siemens. The technical experience
and track record of completing MRT Line-1 project ahead of time had enabled SMH Rail to secure train
modernization works for SMRT, Singapore.

In addition to the above, SMH Rail operates an AAR certi ed wheel shop facility offering services related to bearing
servicing and reconditioning, axles manufacturing, wheel repro ling and rediscing and gearbox overhauling. Todate,
it has produced more than 100,000 wheelsets and 250,000 reconditioning bearings with zero defects.
