SEMESTER 2 2017/2018

GROUP PROJECT

Project Requirements:
1. In a group of 6, choose a nearby river / stream / residential / industrial /commercial area
(the area could be around UTHM or around Parit Raja).
2. Identify and describe the types and characteristics of pollution occurring in that area.
3. Define the impacts of that particular pollution to the environment based on their
characteristics.
4. Decide a suitable treatment / management method for the respected types of pollution
in order to reduce impacts to the environment and also as pollution prevention. The
proposed treatment / management method must comply with standards required by
respective local authorities.
5. Propose a suitable treatment / management method by including all treatment /
management processes needed, and justify the needs of the processes.
6. Include comments on the effectiveness of the existing treatment /management methods
in the report, and propose how it can be improved (if necessary).

Suggested topics to be studied:


1. Water quality assessment on Parit Raja drainage systems. (Polluted drains)
2. Centralized domestic wastewater treatment systems (e.g. Indahwater Co.)
3. Drinking water treatment (e.g. SAJ, SAINS, SYABAS, SAMB)
4. Palm oil mill effluent treatment (e.g. PPNJ Palm Oil Mill in Kahang)
5. Studies on reduction, recycling and reuse of solid wastes (e.g. Shah Alam Transfer
Station, Alam Flora Transfer Facilities)
6. Industrial wastewater treatment (e.g. Ramatex Sdn Bhd BP, Palm Oil Factory, Food
factory, Pineapple canning industry, etc) (2 groups)
7. Solid waste collection, transport and disposal (e.g. SWM Enviro, Alam Flora)
8. Leachate treatment methods and water quality protection at landfill sites (e.g. Landfill
sites in Seelong, Kulai, Simpang Renggam)
9. Hazardous/Clinical waste management (e.g. hospitals, industries)

Report Requirements:
1. NO MORE than 15 pages. (excluding pictures and diagrams).
2. Must contain picture of group at the site.
3. Must contain introduction and background of study, problem statements,
4. analysis of the sources of problems, discussion on problems (what?
5. why? where? when?), probable solutions (pollution abatement methods),
recommendations and conclusions.
6. Pictures of the site and any observations made during trip must be
7. included.
8. NO DUPLICATE / NO COPY and PASTE from other group’s work!!
9. You will be assessed based on the originality of the work.
10. You should be able to extract and analyze the information from various
resources (journals, books, technical reports, etc.)
11. The list of references must be included in your project report.
