My Five Senses

Grade: Pre-Kindergarten

Subject: Reading and Writing


Length of Lesson: 1 hour
Lesson Overview/Rationale: Students will experience Reading and Writing by understanding how each
of the five senses works. Students will work in groups of three.
Curriculum Framework/Standard: “Children demonstrate a growing ability to use originality or vision
when approaching learning; use imagination, show ability to visualize a solution or new concept”. Pg. 14
“Michigan’s Early Childhood Standards of Quality for Prekindergarten.”
Learning Objective:
● Students will be able to identify and describe their five sense.
● Students will be able to illustrate their five senses.
● Students will be able to recognize their five senses.
Technology Uses:
● Computer/Tablet
Materials:
● Dry erase markers
● Color pencils
● Paper booklet
● Dry erase board
Procedure:
● Teacher will review the five senses and what they do.
● Have students watch the Five Sense Video and follow along.
● Students than will get in groups of three.
● Each group will draw a picture on the dry erase board for the sense they were assigned. They
should make sure to write a short sentence using the sense given.
● One student will identify the sense given.
● One student should draw and illustrate the sense they were given.
● One student will write a short sentence about the sense given.
● Each group will then create a paper booklet that contains the five senses, including a short
sentence describing the sense.

Assessment:
● I’ll walk around to observe the students working on the dry erase board and see if they
understand how each sense works.
● Each group will be graded on their book that contains all five sense.
