was a very nice place and there
were lots of crops to eat, so
when we needed to move here
in San Francisco, we were sad
to leave the place we learned to
love,” Corazon added.
Now, lola still managed to

“4Ps was really a great help
for me and my family be-
cause now, my children won’t
experience the life I had before
because they already have de-
cent jobs that can supply them
enough money for their every-
day living,” she added.
Every month, she is given
P500 as a health grant, P300 is
given to each child beneficiary

in the household, they may
receive P 1, 400. Lolita and all
the other beneficiaries submit
receipts of expenses they have
made with the money to ensure
that it has been used for good.
“The truth is if we will sum
it up, the money they give
every three months doesn’t
suffice the needs of the children
in terms of their education, but
walk and do other things on her
own like eating and changing
clothes. She throws tantrums
every now and then. But when
in a good mood, she smiles and
laughs a lot.
“She likes walking around.
It serves as her exercise. She
eats anything that is served but
she mostly likes to eat vegeta-
bles. She also sometimes drinks
alcohol. I think that’s the secret
why she lived long,” Corazon
stated with a laugh.

senior citizens. She continues

Making home-made ice cream from scratch

Brain Freeze!
In making ice cream you would need hard work, patience and
passion. It takes hours before you can make it and at your first try
there is a very big chance that you will not be successful. As the
saying goes, “Try and try until you succeed,” eventually you will
be able to make the best ice cream ever made.
1. Boil water for 3-5 minutes. When done, pour the hot water to a
bowl with cassava flour, mix and then set aside.
2. Pour coconut oil to the mixture and add all dry ingredients
including the flavoring.
3. Place the mixture to the ice cream mixture, turn it on and leave
it for 1 hour.
4. After, place ice around the container of the ice cream and wait
for 2-3 hours until it is hardened.
5. The ice cream is now ready to serve. For it to last 3-5 days, add
salt to the ice cream and place ice around the container again.

It’s no secret that coconut is consid-
ered as the tree of life. Almost all of its
parts are useful as what Ryan Cayabyab’s
song says. Coconut oil, charcoal, and
coco lumber to name a few. But in a
secluded place of Barangay Hubang, San
Francisco, Agusan del Sur, is where we
can find Kaagap Development Multipur-
pose Cooperative (KaagapMUCO) who
has a unique way of using coconut husk,
which some considered as a trash, can
evolved into a useful material.
KaagapMUCO Coco Coir Process-
ing Plant is established in 2002. They
are the producers of coco coir, a rope
fiber fashioned from coconut husks and
woven into geonets or rolls of fiber mesh
nets used in preventing soil erosion and
landslides.
Members of the cooperative are the
main providers of coco husks they used
for processing. They are given incentives
whenever they sell their coconuts unlike
those who are not.
“We also hired some of our members
here. They can earn at least P200 a day.
The coco coir they make, with a length
of 12 meters, is sold at P4.80 a piece,”
said Marife Malana, book keeper and
officer-in-charge of the day.
The coco coir made would undergo
twining and weaving until it becomes
a geonet. Each roll of geonet with 50
square meters is sold for P2,750.
Most of their buyers are from Depart-
ment of Public Works and Highways,
which used it for road construction, as
well as mining firms in Caraga Region.
Even big mining companies in Surigao
del Norte and Surigao del Sur use geon-
ets on sloping areas near communities
and highways to prevent landslides.

Agusan del Sur, reveals that their office
has provided KaagapMuCo 13 handloom
weaving equipment, 85 hook manual
twining equipment, 10 2-hook electrical
twining equipment, 6 twine roller with
rack, and 2 decorticating machine to cope
up with the demand of geonets in the
market.
Cabotaje said that KaagapMuco is a
recipient of financial and technical assis-
tance grant from Spanish Government
thru the Philippine coconut Authority
(PCA) for its coco coir processing
project.

aware of its importance that it has been
doing zumba session every Friday after
class. The Local Government Unit
(LGU) of San Francisco has also been
promoting healthy lifestyle by conduct-
ing zumba dance every Saturday from 5
am to 6 am for 2 years now.
However, very few actually practice the
art of living healthy. Many of us believe
that a healthy life implies looking good.
But what does a healthy life really
imply?
A healthy lifestyle means maintain-
ing a balance nutritious diet as well as
indulging in sports or other fitness related
activities.
A healthy diet is essential for a
healthy life. A healthy diet done however
is inadequate to ensure a healthy body
as physical activity helps to keep one in
shape and free of sickness and disease.
Food and Nutrition Research Institute
reports that 90% of Filipinos had one or
more of these health risk factors: smok-
ing, obesity, hypertension, high blood
sugar, and abnormal blood cholesterol
levels. These are lifestyle diseases that
become the biggest threat to our health.
Obesity is a grave problem these days.
It is the reason why people suffer from
many health complications such as diabe-
tes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol
and even cancer. This is caused by eating
unhealthy foods, eating fatty foods,
sitting around all day doing nothing and
by doing needle work.
Thus, the emphasis on healthy life-
style should start at a young age. Parents
should urge their children to eat more
vegetables and fruits. Tone down dining
out because it usually involves eating
heavily and unhealthy, School confesses

drinks,. People should allocate time for
different physical activities.
It is essential to recognize the im-
portance of having a lifestyle by simply
learning to say no, and using our free

for herbal medicine to find cure to their
ailments. It is less expensive and as they
say healthier – no side effects.
School guard Ramon Honra-
da, called as Kuya Munching, strongly
believed that drinking his ‘miracle tea’
had been the cure of his arthritis and
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) which had
been bothering him for months.
“I was having a hard time
reporting to school because of too much
pain in my knees. It was excruciating! It
was very hard for me to walk. I have tak-
en medicines but the pain still lingered,”
Honrada expressed during the interview.
According to him, a friend
of his recommended a special tea which
came from a plant that found in the
school and is easy to prepare.
“It was called Balbas Pusa.
I went straight in front of Children with
Special Needs (CSNs) classrooms where
the plant was found. I asked some from
Ma’am Bibay, who also used it, and
asked how it is prepared,” he added.

pusa (Orthosiphon aristatus) is easy to
prepare when use as medicine. Just put
the leaves in a casserole then add water.
Then boil it for five minutes. Viola! You
can have your miracle tea. You can also

It serves as my tea every morning. I also
brought some to school so I can drink it
just like drinking water,” Honrada said.
After drinking it for days, he noticed
that the pain on his knees was slowly
going away. He was able to walk again
normally.
“I am really thankful that I listened to my
friend’s advice. Now, my walk is back
to normal. I also happen to read online
about balbas pusa. It was written there
that balbas pusa is also good in cleansing
our kidneys. So I also let my daughter
drink it because she has UTI. She said it
was effective,” he exclaimed.

“Maintaining good oral hygiene is
a vital thing you can do for your teeth
and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable
you to look and feel good, they make it
possible to speak and eat properly,” she
stressed.
According to her cleanliness of the
mouth is important to avoid acquiring
diseases like gingivitis or inflammation
of the gums, tooth decay and bad breath.
“Taking care of our teeth is essential
because without it we cannot chew our
food well and also to avoid experiences
of pain,” Tan added.
She also expressed that dental prob-
lems among children can greatly affect
their performance in school.
“Dental carries is frequent among
kids. Every time a child has tooth ache,
he/she has the tendency to be absent
in school. They also can’t study well
because of too much pain hence their
grades may be affected,” she opined.
Tan also stated that kids should visit
their dentist twice a year for check-up
and remember the steps that decrease
the risk of developing tooth decay, gum
diseases and other dental problems.
“Brush your teeth twice a day. Avoid
eating too much sweets or sticky food.
Use dental products that contain fluo-
ride,” she said.

llaney’s skills as a chess
player came about when she
was eight years old. She learned
to play it from her father. He
was the one who introduced
Allaney to the world of board
games. Her father was very
patient and hands-on in tutoring
her in their every day practice.
“My father is a great teacher.
I inherited my talent and skills
in chess from him. He was the
one who pushed me to keep
her and persistence to win.
The rookie player, a grade
student of East Bunawan Cen-
tral Elementary School, grap-
pled in horror as she wasted a

“I considered Allaney as an
A-1 player. She was very good
in her craft. She is hard work-
ing and passionate,” said Mr.
Dan Tepan, Allaney’s coach in
elementary.
Due to her great skills
in playing chess, Nazareth
Schools of National University
(NSNU) became interested in
her and recruited her to be one
of their student athletes after
she graduated elementary.

parents supported her in very

“Chess opened me to
different opportunities. I’ve
been to different places here
in the Philippines and outside
of the country. I was able to
study in a prestigious university
for free with allowance,” she
exclaimed.
To many young chess
players, Allaney’s success is an
inspiration. She’s a living proof
that pursuing one’s passion,
believing that you can and
pushing self to attain excellence
is a way of achieving dreams.
