1.1 What is waste?

Any substance or object the holder discards, intends to discard or is

required to discard is waste. Once a substance or object has become waste it
will remain waste until it has been fully recovered and no longer poses a
potential threat to the environment or to human health.

Waste occurs when any organism returns substances to the environment.

Living things consume materials and excrete wastes that are recycled by
other living organisms. However, humans produce an additional flow of
material residues that overloads the material capacity of natural recycling
processes, so these wastes must be managed to reduce their effect on our
aesthetics, health and the environment.

1.2 Types of waste

All our daily activities can give rise to a large variety of different waste
arising from different sources. They are:

i. Biodegradable waste

It is waste that is originated from plant or animal sources which may

be broken down by other living organisms. Ex. Green waste, food
waste, paper waste, sewage, slaughter house waste, human waste,
manure and biodegradable plastics.
ii. Biomedical waste

It consists of solids, liquids, sharps and laboratory waste that are

infectious. It should be properly managed to protect the general
public, specifically healthcare and sanitation workers who are exposed
to biochemical waste as an occupational hazard. It’s producers are
health clinics, nursing homes medical research laboratories,
veterinarians etc..

iii. Bulky waste

2.1 Objectives

Since the percentage of the hotel industries when compared to the other
industries in Goa is the highest, we choose this topic:

• To study the various types of waste.

• To analyze the types of waste in hotels.

• To identify the problem faced by the society due to inefficient hotel

waste management.

• To study the various measures adopted in the treatment of hotel waste.

• To study the role of Government, NGO’s and municipalities towards

hotel waste management.

• To study whether the hotel industry is eco- friendly to some extent.

2.2 Source of information

The primary data was collected through interviews of various personnel in
charge of waste disposal in hotels. They were interviewed on the basis of a
questionnaire designed by the group.

Secondary data was collected from the internet, newspapers, magazines

etc.

2.3 Scope

Under the project we have studied waste management methods adopted by

the in the Bardez Taluka. We have covered hotels and studied about the
types of hotel waste, treatment of waste and disposal of waste. We have also
identified the role of government and NGO’s in waste management of
hotels. The role of MMC was also questioned on the basis of disposal of
hotel waste through questionnaires framed by us.

2.4 Limitations

• Due to time constraints our study was limited to only hotels.

• Most of the hotels refrained to provide the required information and

disclose cost.

• Government authorities refused to provide information and showed no

interest when questions were asked.

• Some hotels as well as Government authorities provided false

information due to the fear of publication in the newspaper.
