Assignment 1
Due date January 22, 2012

Group A

1. A shear frame building shown in Fig. 1 is subjected m4

to an earthquake motion characterized by the design u4
spectrum of EBCS-8, 1995 scaled to peak ground h k4
acceleration of 0.5g for a medium stiff ground (Soil m3
u3
class B) and 5% damping ratio.Using Response
spectrum analysis: h k3
m2
u2
a) Determine the natural vibration periods and h k2
modes as ω n = α n k m m1
u1
b) Expand the effective earthquake forces in
h k1
terms of their modal components and show this
expansion graphically
c) For each mode determine the roof
displacement un base shear and the base Figure 1 2h
overturning moment
d) Using the appropriate modal combination rule, calculate the peak values of
the roof displacement uo, base shear Vbn and base over turning moment Mbo.
e) Which modal combination is selected? Why?

2. The same shear frame shown in Fig. 1 is subjected to an artificial earthquake

ground motion history derived from the design spectrum of EBCS 8, 1995 scaled
to 0.5g. Using the RHA calculate the response history and peak values of top floor
displacement, base shear, and base overturning moment.

3. Compare the results obtained from the RSA and RHA and comment.

Group B

1. A uniform slab shown in Fig. 2 is supported on four circular column rigidly

attached to the slab and clamped at the base. Determine the peak earthquake
response of the structure using response spectrum analysis (RSA) if it is excited
by ground motion in the y-direction, which can be characterized by the design
spectrum of EBCS-8, 1995 for a medium stiff ground (Soil class B) and 5%
damping ratio scaled to 0.5g peak ground acceleration.

f) Determine the natural vibration periods and modes as ω n = α n k m

g) Expand the effective earthquake forces in terms of their modal components
and show this expansion graphically
h) For each mode determine the displacement uy and rotation uθ of the slab,
base shear Vb and the base torque Tb
i) Using the appropriate modal combination rule, calculate the peak values of
displacement uy and rotation uθ of the slab, base shears in the x and y
directions and the base torque.
j) Which modal combination is selected? Why?

2. The same slab shown in Fig. 2 is subjected to artificial EQ ground motion history
derived from the design spectrum of EBCS 8, 1995 scaled to 0.5g. Using the
RHA calculate the response history and peak values of displacement and base
shear in the x- and y-direction, base overturning torque.

3. Compare the results obtained from the RSA and RHA and comment.
