1. METACOGNITION
In the scene of the non-speaking English patient named Sang Ha who was found to
be unconscious and have intermittent blindness in the supermarket and later admitted
as Dr. Leighton patient. Getting the diagnosis of what wrong with him is really difficult
due to the language barrier because Dr. Leighton is an English language speaker while
Getting a translator doesn’t really help, her response was no idea when asked
what are the signs & symptoms of Sang Ha. This was due to being a Cantonese
translator but she was able to get a clue that Sang Ha trying to say he had intermittent
blindness while trying to understand him, this was noted by the Dr. Leighton. Sang Ha
Rolling of hand around the head gave Dr. Mike, the doctor on observation shift that
something is ringing in Sang Ha head. During that time only a classic strong was
suspected by because there was obvious Facial & eyelid droop on Sang Ha face but
As time passed by CT scan results give clue of the diagnosis to be Classic Stroke
but unclear because no enough evidence to conclude on. Which made Dr. Leighton
order TPA for Sang Ha but this might lead to death of him because if there’s clot
present it will be burst up and leading to bleeding which lead to the death of Sang
Ha.
Comparing and reflecting of all the results from the neuro exam and physical
observation made by Sang Ha such as; ringing in his ear, facial and eyelid droop with
one of the most significant of all which is Isolated Horner’s Syndrome from the CT test.
All these made Dr. Mike foreseen and believed it not a classic Stroke but rather a
Carotid Dissection, so the careful observation and relating all the outcomes together
made a way of him making the right decision on the diagnosis which eventually save
the life of Sang Ha from bleeding which might lead to his death.
Respecting others and not crossing the line in the episode was demonstrated by the
Head Doctor of hospital named Dr. Perello by instructing all the doctors in duty and in
charge of Tia care. According to Mr. Adam Benton, the father of Tia, getting a surgery
is a violation to their religion and faith. He believed having a pure heart and faith in
God will cure his daughter from not getting her leg amputated and the blood vessels in
the leg were found to be destroyed and lead to compartment syndrome which might
cause her to loss her leg by cutting off the blood supply to her leg and not be able to
walk again.
Stay out of this; was the clear instruction from Dr. Perello not until a judge intervene
so legal action can be taken in giving her medical care. Though Dr. Leanne later tried
to convince Tia of her making her own decision because she is sixteen and can legally
make her own decision. Not respecting the father wish, of not giving her Daughter a
medical care and intervening while the decision by Mr. Benton already clear to the
The patient that got injured on his face specifically the upper part of the nose and
the hand, his communication behavior and appreciating the doctor was in appropriate
such as telling her if u keeping holding my hand maybe the pain can be ignored and
hugging her without her consent demonstrated there he had cross the line of the doctor
treating and plus the gender difference because the doctor is a lady. J.J and Kamila
scenario
3. EMPATHY
Dr. Hudson, that was in charge of Mr. Randall and Danielle son named Trevor, who
was admitted to his unconsciousness and found on the bottom of the swimming pool at
their house because the gardener forgot to lock the gate to the swimming pool.
The sad and crying face on the couple was overwhelming to the extent that Dr.
Hudson and the other doctors were trying to do all their best in recovering Trevor
consciousness. Specifically Dr. Hudson can feels how sad the couple was about their son
condition and for the wife putting the guilty on herself saying she always check the
gate every night if it’s close or no, but due to the tiredness from work and deciding to
took a rest, procrastination of repairing the latch of the gate might lead to the death
of their son.
With all these, Dr. Hudson was able to encourage the couple to be strong and help
each other with what is happening, he told the husband have you ever deliberately
hurt Danielle (wife) of course no and I think Danielle would not deliberately want to
hurt your son, which give him the sense of acknowledge that he needs to stop putting
the blame on her but rather moving close to and accepting her.
Dr. Hudson giving updates on not knowing what will happen next and positive
observation seen on Trevor such as; responding to reflexes and no brain damage on
their son is relieving for the parents and assuring them that Trevor will be alright
eventually because he’s a fighter expressed that he can sense and put himself in the
The death of the Asthma (Mrs. Rockman) patient due to heart attack who was
admitted to Dr. Lorenson care, was really heartbreaking for Dr. Lorenson feeling that
the child will not able to see their mother again. Telling the husband was heartbreaking
and hard for her. Though putting herself as the cause of death by not fore seeing the
silent heart attack to her patient shows that she can feels and empathized for the
patient.
Dr. Lorenson made a move of putting the patient in observation for a while and
called Dr. Hudson to have a confirmed check on Mrs. Rockman but due to head doctor
instruction of discharging her, she was unable to prevent the upcoming heart attack.
4. GENUINENESS
Dr. Hudson coordinate himself professionally, by being careful with his expression in
consciousness because the time the brain was deprived of oxygen was unknown, which
might lead to Trevor brain damage. He all his response are positive, in a scene where
he’s been asked; you don’t think he’s goanna wake up, do you? He responded; I’m
hopeful. Also he tried to give a listening ear to the wife complain to further know how
she and her husband can less worried but rather stay positive for Trevor gaining
conscious.
In the scene of the asthma patient, Dr. lorenson who’s in charged show of being
herself regarding Mrs. Rockman asthma symptoms and letting the head doctor of the
hospital, Dr. Perello to be aware that the patient cannot be discharged yet for further
observation though she only has a hunch without clear reason of not discharging Mrs.
Rockman. If possible her wish of not discharging her asthma patient was granted, the
death of Mrs. Rockman would have been prevented from silent heart attack.
Being yourself personally and professionally was conveyed by Dr. Leighton attitude
by stands on his gut, regarding Sang Ha diagnosis because the CT stated that it’s
clearly a stroke and telling Dr. Mike that he got this right by backing it up that the
microvascular change on the CT, and before the stroke symptoms are permanent, he
don’t have a lot time in saving Sang Ha life which shows that he’s willing to stand on
5. MORAL REASONING
Separating between what is right and what is wrong to do is one of the difficult
decision to make especially when it deals with one perspective and believe. In the case
of Tia and his father who believes his daughter can be heal by having pure heart and
being faithful with prayer is the right way of not violating and being disobedient to
God’s will, this is really a tough time for the doctors in charge specifically Dr. Rorish,
trying her best in making Tia deciding without putting is father believe in consideration
but rather the present situation of the pain she’s experiencing and further complication
of the leg which was said to be life threatening and might takes her life.
Dr. Pinkney and Dr. Saveffi cautious move in convincing Tia with her father’s believe
and her condition in getting medical care was a risk move in violating the law because,
the patient decision has to be respected. Clear Analysis of what right and wrong of the
present situation to Tia by asking the question: “Why is he (father) wearing Glasses?”
and “why is it okay for him to allow doctor to help him see again but you can’t let us
help you walk again?” was the right way to rethink about her father and her own
In conclusion, I found that to be one of the right way in giving suggestion to the
patient in making the right decision between the wrong doing and right doing,
Which will probably lead to the therapeutic medical cure of the patient and save the
