There are various types of classifications of solutions. On the basis of amount of solute, solutions can be classified as concentrated
and dilute solutions. Concentrated solutions contains large amount of solute whereas dilute solutions contains less amount of solute.
On the basis of physical states of solute and solvents, solutions can be classified as solid, liquid and gaseous solutions. Gaseous
solutions are usually homogenous mixtures of gases like air. In liquid solutions, gas, solid or liquid solute is mixed with liquid solvent.
Liquid solutions are very common like salt solution, sugar solution etc. In solid solutions, both solvent and solute are in solid state
like alloys, ceramics, and polymer blends.
Types of Solutions
Depending upon the dissolution of the solute in the solvent, solutions can be categorized into supersaturated,
unsaturated and saturated solutions.
A supersaturated solution comprises of a large amount of solute at a temperature wherein it will be reduced as a
result the extra solute will crystallize quickly.
An unsaturated solution is a solution in which solvent is capable of dissolving any more solute at given
temperature.
A saturated solution can be defined as a solution in which solvent is not capable of dissolving any more solute at
given temperature.
