A vertical channel 152 x 76 ( see Table A-7 ) has a cantilever bolted to it as shown.

The channel
is hot-rolled AISI 1006 steel with a yield strength of Sy = 170 MPa. The bar is of hot-rolled AISI
1015 steel having a yield strength of Sy = 190 MPa. The bolts are M12 x 1.75 ISO 5.8. If the
applied load (F) is 1.8 kN, find the factor of safety guarding against shear of bolts.

t = 6.4 mm Steel Steel Bar

Channel
shaft has a uniform diameter of d and is made of AISI 1030 CD steel. Assume that the fatigue stress
concentration factors are 1.5 for bending and 1.2 for shear.

a) Using static analysis of shafts, calculate the minimum shaft diameter d for a factor safety n = 2.0
using the Maximum Distortion Energy theory.
b) For the diameter calculated in Part (a), it was noted that the slope at the right bearing (C) is near
the limit for a cylindrical roller bearing (θC = 0.001 rad). Find the diameter d that would reduce
that slope to 0.0005 rad with a design factor of nd = 2.0:
c) Check the diameter found above in Part (b) if it satisfies a fatigue factor of safety of at least nf =
2.0. Use the DE-Goodman approach. Use Se = 300 MPa and Sut = 520 MPa.
