R ichly embellished, romantic,

elegant, eccentric, on trend yet
timeless – but always quintessentially
British – Alice Temperley’s bohemian
designs were just the ticket at last
Friday’s very modern royal wedding,
with a number of guests wearing her
4 playfully eclectic pieces.
Alice, speaking to us at our
exclusive photoshoot at her jewellery
box of a country home in Somerset
ahead of Princess Eugenie’s big day, is
no stranger to royalty. She regularly
gets the seal of approval from the
Duchess of Cambridge, who wowed
in two Temperley outits during her
2016 trip to India with her husband
the Duke. And Kate’s sister Pippa
Middleton caused a sensation herself
in 2011 when her elder sibling
married Prince William, wearing a
show-stopping green gown to their
evening reception. A few months
later, Alice crowned her incredible
year by being named Designer of the
Year at the Hollywood Style Awards.
With Tinseltown and rock royalty
now in on the act, Alice’s dreamy
creations are sought after by the likes
of Keira Knightley, Sarah Jessica
Parker and Penélope Cruz. Actress
Troian Bellisario – whose husband
Patrick J Adams starred with Meghan
Markle in Suits – attended the
Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in a
Temperley dress.
That Alice’s award-winning designs
are as much at home in the closets of
Kensington Palace as they are in the
dressing rooms of Hollywood’s most

the Somerset countryside.
It reflects Alice’s eclectic
tastes, mixing traditional
British style with quirky
embellishments

fashionable stars is testament to the
dizzying success of a girl who grew up
among haystacks and apple trees on a
cider farm.
She once cut up her mum’s
favourite 1920s lampshades to create
accessories for her siblings, but by the
age of 11, she was selling homemade
earrings out of her father’s barn.

in 2000, with Temperley Bridal
following six years later. Her designs
are now sold all over the world, with
Alice’s fashion wonderland helping
put Cool Britannia back on the map.
“I just love her clothes,” says
Spanish aristocrat, It girl and Alice’s
friend Alejandra de Rojas, who joins
try on pieces from the pre-autumn
and autumn collections. “Her clothes
are pure bohemian and totally
versatile. I love how she mixes colours,
textures, shapes.”
Alice returns the compliment.
“Alejandra’s the perfect Temperley
woman: powerful, independent and
free,” she says.
Cricket Court, that her influences
and loves come magically together:
the British and the bohemian, the
traditional and the exotic – not to
mention disco balls and chandeliers.
The grade II-listed Regency-era house
was built on the remains of a medieval
castle that featured in the Domesday 5
Book in 1086 – William the

It was also the site of a secret meeting
between Winston Churchill and General
Eissenhower during the Second World War.
A home to Alice and her son Fox, ten –
shee is divorced from Fox’s father Lars von
Bennigsen – the eight-bedroom mansion
is set
s in ive and a half acres of woodland.
Flooor-to-ceiling French windows as well as
a skylight in the impressive oak-panelled
cirrcular library flood the property with
light, with breathtaking views stretching
acrross the terrace and manicured gardens
and out over the West Country.
“My favourite thing about the house is
thee light – it always has amazing golden
su nsets, creating the most beautiful
rellections and colours,” says Alice, as she
sheeds her own light on her personal style,
fammous fans and her winning approach to
fashion in this intimate interview.
Aliice, how does it feel to be a fashion
favvourite to the Middleton girls?
“It’s an honour. Both Catherine and her
sistter are great women.”
Aree you involved in Eugenie’s wedding?
“I’mm dressing lots of the guests, but I can’t
me ention any names – I’m always very
disscreet, especially when it comes to the
Pallace. So you’ll have to wait and see.”
As more and more movie stars, models

does it make it more challenging to
create future collections?

Alice contrasts classic English style
with bold, coloured accents such as
striking fabrics on pillows and
cushions in the sitting room. The
oak panelled library (below) with its
impressive dome skylight is one of
many rooms featuring the Union flag
“I always like to take inspiration from my
muses. It’s very important to me that
my muses wear my creations and enjoy
them. If this wasn’t the case, I would not be
doing my job properly.”
What led you to buy Cricket Court?
“I grew up locally on my family’s cider
farm. When I found this house I fell in love
with it. It’s magical, bonkers and totally
eccentric. Also, everything tells a story; the
walls, the rooms, the amazing views.”
What’s it like to know that William the
Conqueror gave this estate to his brother?
“It’s overwhelming that many people with
incredible stories spent time in my house. I
love that it has so much history – Winston
Churchill and General Eisenhower visited
it while planning the D-Day landings. I’m
really passionate about history and
everything that I’ve discovered about the
house is part of my life and my inspirations.”
Did you decorate it yourself?
“Absolutely, yes. I love to travel and take
inspiration from different countries and
cultures. I love to bring a little something
back. All the mirrors, chandeliers… I’m
always collecting. This is a place where I
can feel safe and be at one.”
What does the house mean to you?
“Everything in the house tells a story about
my life and travels. It’s a very good place 7
to find inspiration, to mix things

together with space and freedom. It’s

people – and children love it.”
What’s your favourite room here?
“My disco-ball bathroom – I like to watch the
light relecting off the mirrors. Also, the library is
amazing with its circular ceiling and big windows.”
The Union lag is quite a theme…
“I love quintessentially British elements; I love
colours; I really value traditions, history and my
origins. I guess you could say I collect cool
memorabilia.”
The flag features on a coat of arms that also
bears the letters ER in one of the bedrooms.
Does this have a special meaning?
“I love the Queen and crests and cool coats of
arms. I met Her Majesty in 2011 when I received
my MBE from her at Buckingham Palace for my
services to fashion.”
You also have a house in West London…
“I divide my week between Notting Hill and
Cricket Court. My son goes to school in Somerset
so it’s good to be here with him and see my
parents and siblings. I often have a house full of
friends and children; the more the merrier.
We’re a very close family. We regularly meet for
big lunches or parties, either at my home or at
my parent’s farm. They have a lake on the cider
farm with a beautiful log cabin where we meet for
8 barbecues and to go swimming.
“And I entertain a lot. This summer was

people most weekends. Every year I manage a
summer party for my birthday and we celebrate
Apple Day too. For Christmas, I love to invite all
my family and kids to celebrate.”
Do you still keep alpacas grazing on the meadows
around your house?
“I currently don’t have any but I am looking to
buy some, now that I’m based in Somerset more.
I would love to get miniature donkeys as well.”
Are you happy to be dubbed Alice in Wonderland?
“I love Alice in Wonderland. The story is dreamlike
and it offers escapism from everyday life.”
Has a rural upbringing inluenced your designs?
“Absolutely. It has deinitely inluenced a lot of
my creations in terms of embroidery and prints. I
mix it with workwear and suiting, the masculine
and the feminine, loaty dresses with big chunky
knits and boots – all very English and real.”
What do you like to wear?
“I always wear my creations; that’s why I like
designing original but easy-to-wear pieces. I
always think about what is comfortable for me
and for any other woman. I love to dress up, of
course, but I usually wear trousers, a white shirt
and a waistcoat. It’s smart but still practical.”
How do you sum up your fashion philosophy?
“I would say my designs are ultra feminine, but
always with an edge. They tell a story and you
should feel a connection and feel that you can
wear them forever. I love my clothes to be
practical and comfortable – my evening

How do you reinvent yourself every season?
“Travel is definitely an important element.

“I’m

a details. I love the loose style of the 1970s

Who is your style icon?
“Eddith Head because of her film noir-era
costu umes and the practicality and grace of my
amazing, country-living, beautiful mother. And
of course the women around me and my muses.”
Why did you say “I do” to bridal fashions?
“It all happened naturally. When I got married,
my wedding was featured in Vogue and I started
receiving requests to design bespoke wedding
gowns. It’s now a big part of our business.”
What’s left of the idealistic art student who began
desig gning to earn a bit more money?
“The e curiosity, the freedom and the authenticity.
I’m really
r proud of it. I work hard and remain
very passionate about the design process.
Noth hing is better than a quiet day of drawing and
I havve to protect those days. It’s like meditation;
you gog to wonderful places while drawing.”
As a creative soul, is it a challenge to be a hard-
head ded businesswoman?
“It’s not easy to find the perfect balance but I
have a great family that supports me and people
that I can trust. It has taken a long time to build
the amazing
a team we have. I’m very proud of
themm and they are always a source of inspiration.”
Are you
y thinking of moving into interior design?
“I deinitely would like to translate the Temperley
Lond don aesthetic into a lifestyle brand. I love
textilles, so home design seems like a natural
prog gression. Stay tuned.” H

plenty to keep her busy last week.

and Jack Brooksbank, she stepped
out twice for oficial engagements.

Kate, who became royal
pattron to the museum in
March, also admired a more
moddern piece: singer Beyoncé’s
exqquisite papillon ring by
British jeweller Glenn Spiro.

paint and draw as well as he’d like, invented a

camera to “ix” images upon paper.
When senior curator Martin Barnes explained
that Fox Talbot blamed his lack of drawing skills
on his pencil, the Duchess responded by saying:
“George would do that!”
Kate, who wrote a thesis on Alice in Wonderland
author Lewis Carroll’s photography when
studying art history at the University of
St Andrews, took a particular interest in the
museum’s collection of his photos.
Said Martin Barnes: “She was very
knowledgeable about the history of photography
and interested in the galleries. We were delighted
to host her. One of our curators had done a
doctorate on the same lines and they had a very
scholarly conversation. She said she worked
incredibly hard on it.”

GIVEN THE BRUSH-OFF

The Duchess’s evening out came a day after she
and her husband attended the inaugural Global
Miniisterial Mental Health Summit, at London’s
County Hall, which is intended to help countries
work k together to confront stigma and other
issuees to do with mental health.
Prrince William and Kate, wearing the Emilia
Wick kstead dress she debuted on the couple’s tour
to GGermany last year, which she accessorised with
nudee heels by Gianvito Rossi and the Midi Mayfair
bag from Aspinal of London, couldn’t help but
smilee after being invited to make their mark on
an ab bstract painting entitled Someone to Turn To by
Lond don-based Colombian artist Dairo Vargas.
Th he Duke immediately gestured for Kate to go
irst, saying: “My wife, she’s the arty one.”
Th he Duchess picked up the paintbrush and,
look king for the least obvious place to make her
mark k, joked: “Where can you hide it?”
When the artist pointed to an area, she added

a touch of white paint and asked him: “Fine?”
““That’s pretty much ruined the picture,”
jok ked William, who then took his turn.
“This is a great, great compliment,” said
Kaate. “It’s great to have some creative reason in
wh hich the same [mental health] conversations
aree going on.”
Dairo later described the couple as “great,
veery fun”.
“I had always rather hoped they might have
a go but didn’t know until the day that they
would,” he added. “I think I am going to leave

T he Duke of Cambridge has had a long-standing
passion for protecting our planet and wildlife for
future generations and, just days before his two eldest
children Prince George and Princess Charlotte starred at
the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank,
the royal dad showed his little ones were not far from his
mind as he gave a heartfelt keynote address at the Illegal
Wildlife Trade Conference.
Speaking at the event at Battersea Evolution in London,
the 36-year-old father of three said: “It is heart-breaking to
think that by the time my children George, Charlotte and
Louis are in their 20s, elephants, rhinos and tigers might
well be extinct in the wild. I for one am not willing to look
my children in the eye and say we were the generation
that let this happen on our watch.”
Prince William also told the assembled delegates,
which included political leaders and conservation groups,
about his recent week-long trip to Africa in his role as
royal patron of Tusk Trust, where he encountered
critically endangered species during a visit to the Mkomazi
Rhino Sanctuary in Tanzania at the end of last month.
William noted that some of the rhinos he saw “are under
such threat that they have more bodyguards than I do”.

A TALK ON THE WILD SIDE

His comments came as part of the two-day conference,
which spearheads the fight against the illegal trade in
wildlife parts and that also saw the Prince of Wales heap
praise on his son’s efforts in a video message.
“I can only say here how proud I am of the role my
elder son, William, has played as a leader in this area,
helping to raise the issue higher up the global agenda,”

Pop star Ellie Goulding, who sang at William’s evening
wedding celebrations in 2011, also threw her weight
behind the campaign, speaking at the conference in her
role as a UN environmental goodwill ambassador.
“Treat this crime as seriously as other international

it to an end. You have the mandate to act and engage

T o her friends, Darcey Bussell was a Dame long
before she was officially made one. In the
Royal Ballet, the company in which she shone as
principal dancer for 20 years, it was her nickname.
“They’d always say: ‘Dame Darcey coming in
the room,’ as a wind-up,” says the former prima
ballerina, who received her honour for services to
dance from the Queen in May.
“So it was funny when it became official as
I received all these texts saying: ‘It’s just not fun
any more.’ I was like: ‘Sorry, I’ve ruined the joke.’”
She wears the title well. The Strictly Come Dancing
judge is in a playful mood on our exclusive
photoshoot – pulling daft faces to camera, kicking
up her legs under tulle petticoats – but slips into
each elegant pose with effortless grace.
“I like dresses I don’t have to do anything in,”
she says, playing down her ability to create drama
and beauty in one shot.
20 We meet in the week scandal hits Strictly, with
contestant Seann Walsh photographed kissing his
married professional partner, Katya Jones, on a
night out. His girlfriend, Rebecca Humphries,
publicly ended her relationship with the comedian
on Twitter shortly afterwards, and there followed
demands for him to leave the show.
DANCING AROUND THE SUBJECT
Darcey won’t be drawn on this, although she
would be disappointed to see anyone go, she tells
us, as they are such a “talented bunch” this year.
“This is probably the biggest pool of celebrities
we’ve had who I think are going to be shockingly
brilliant. And we have a handful of surprises. Kate
Silverton has been behind a news desk, so who’d
have known she’d be a natural performer? Another
is Joe Sugg – he has such rhythm and lexibility.”
Now in her seventh year on the judging panel,
with Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and
Bruno Tonioli, Darcey says she is “more conident
in who I am and what I do” on the show. The
empathy she shows contestants – she is unfailingly
measured and fair – is part of that.

easier to identify the things that go wrong,” she
says. “It’s much harder to try and see the best bits
and strengths coming through.”
It is why, she believes, stories of rivalry and
resentment surfaced when head judge and
former dance champion Shirley joined the panel
last year. “That’s so normal,” she says. “That’s
what they do with women. If we came in wearing
a suit every day, then it wouldn’t be so interesting.
But because we’re both dressing up, creating a
look, it’s the same old stuff.
“There’s no competition because we’ve had
our careers. We’ve both been experts in our ield.
To still be striving at my age…” the 49-year-old
says, sticking her shoulders back and chin up for
emphasis. “No, I’ve burnt that out,” she laughs.
“And I’m sure Shirley would say the same.”

STRICTLY FAMILY TIME

The mother of daughters Phoebe, 17, and Zoe,
14, with businessman husband Angus Forbes, is a
household name thanks to the show. She still
travels by Tube and can occasionally go
unnoticed if she’s quiet and keeps herself to
herself. “It’s often my voice that people recognise.
“I suppose the only time I feel uncomfortable
[about being approached] is when I’m with my
kids, as I don’t want them to be affected by it,”
she says. “I like to think I’m pretty normal and
grounded at home, but if I’m somewhere I’m
going to be focus of attention, I don’t think
that’s the way they want to see me. Sometimes it
makes them laugh, other times they’re like:
‘Urgh, Mum!”
She’s not beyond getting starstruck herself. At
her investiture at Buckingham Palace in May, Sir
Paul McCartney was in the queue ahead, waiting
to collect his Companion of Honour order from
the Queen.
“He’s kind of big, isn’t he?” she says excitedly,
talking for the irst time about her date at the
Palace. “My mum was really chuffed to meet him.
His daughter Mary was there, who has taken a lot
of photos of me, and very kindly said: ‘Would you
like one of you and my dad?’ And I went: w ‘Yes
please, Mary.’”
They threw a party for family and friends
round the corner from the Palace after a the
event. “When you get an honour it’s really
appreciating a collaboration, isn’t it? It’s all
the people who have supported you, believed

in you, through all your ups and

downs in your career.”

Dance Mix, her dance fitness programme 23

Next year marks another milestone as she turns
50. Blessed with an ethereal beauty and natural
poise, she can’t be too worried about the ageing
process. “Well I’m not going to get a new face,”
she jokes, pulling her cheeks back with her hands.
“When you get older, you’re more conident,
but you’re also ageing so people say: ‘Oh dear, it’s

such a shame.’ But you have to have an attitude.
I’m going to grow old gracefully and sorry, I’m
not going to change. The wrinkles? Never mind
about them.
“When I was having kids and still performing, I

YOUTH CORPS
At the opposite end of the spectrum, her
daughters, who are both interested in theatre
and performance, are now teenagers and facing
all the insecurities that adolescence brings.
“I remember it so well, especially as a dancer.
We had to wear leotards. We also had to be
partnered. We had to do pas de deux classes at
school and I remember going red and feeling:
‘Oooh.’ I remember even in my 20s I was paranoid
about my calves, thinking they were too big.”
She was, she says, a sensitive child who had to
learn resilience in the competitive world of classical
ballet. “I was pathetic; always feeling sorry for
myself when I couldn’t catch up with the others.”
However she’s also benefited from the
therapeutic aspects of dance. It’s the subject of a
documentary she’s made for BBC2 to be screened
next month. One group it follows is 12 young
people with no dance experience, recruited from
a Manchester mental health charity, who come
together to form a dance company, culminating
in a performance to a live audience.

lifts you, it releases natural positive
endorphins and it changes you,” says
Darcey.
Has dance given her emotional
stability over the years?
“I would never have known I was using
it in that way, but I learnt focus,
discipline, a structure, so I suppose
it has. Dance was a brilliant way of
understanding myself.”
These days, Strictly provides her with
all the performance she needs. It’s

something she misses as soon as the
series ends.
“Suddenly I’m looking for a sparkly
jumper,
jumper or a pair of heels for a night o
out,
which I probably wouldn’t have botherred
with before. The buzz and the spark kles
are very addictive,” she says, befo ore

T alk about a foundation course in
modelling – Kate Moss’s daughter Lila
Grace has scored her first designer ad
campaign, for Marc Jacobs Beauty. The
16-year-old, whose father is Dazed Media
founder Jefferson Hack, has been revealed
as the latest face of the high-end range,
following in the footsteps of fellow
supermodel offspring Kaia Gerber.
Lila, who appears in photos (right) art-
directed by Katie Grand and with hair by
catwalk favourite Guido Palau, called the
shoot “a really fun experience”, adding:
“I’ve known Marc since I was little and had
heard a lot about Guido from my mum.”
Naturally Kate, who has been friends
with the designer since meeting him when
she was 18 and hired for his famous Perry
Ellis spring/summer 1993 grunge catwalk
show, was on hand to give advice. “She’s
always taught me to work hard and be
polite,” Lila said of her mother.
The high-profile campaign is not the
teen’s first experience of being in front of
the camera. In 2016 Lila and Kate were
shot together for the cover of Vogue Italia.
Besides a striking resemblance to her mum

in the early 1990s), Lila is signed to Kate’s

T here was double delight for colleagues

of Chris Evans last week when he gave
his three-week-old twins Walt and Boo an
introduction to their dad’s day job. The DJ
and father of five was photographed
emerging from BBC Radio 2’s London
studios with his wife Natasha Shishmanian,
each of them cradling a little bundle in
their arms (right) while broadcasting their
love and pride to onlookers.
Smiling widely, they shielded their
babies from the glare of the autumn
sunshine – and publicity – with Natasha,
38, keeping Walt cosy inside her coat while
Chris, 52, cuddled daughter Boo.
No strangers to parenthood, the couple
have two older sons, nine-year-old Noah
and Eli, six, while Chris also has a daughter,
32-year-old Jade, from a previous
relationship. Describing it as “one last
hurrah”, he shared their IVF journey with
regular listeners of his breakfast show and
in April revealed on air that they were
expecting twins. “Double trouble. Twin
turbos,” he quipped. “We’ve known for
a while.”
His son and daughter’s arrival comes at
a time of major change for Chris, who will
leave Radio 2 in December. Last month he
announced he would be heading back to
Virgin Radio, the station he once part-
owned, saying: “You have to keep shaking
it up.” He will be replaced on the Radio 2
breakfast show by Zoë Ball.

they are expecting a girl.
“I am so excited to finally share the news that we
are having a baby!!” Ashley wrote. “Now the time
has come to finally say this out loud I have no idea
what to say! I don’t know if words alone can explain
how full of joy and happiness we both are. It has
been a more difficult journey to this point than
most people know but we are now here with one of
the most precious gifts in the world… A little girl!”
Ashley, who married Francesca – also a dancer –
in 2015, continued: “I have so many strong and
incredible women around me, I know she will have
great examples to follow. Especially this woman
right here – my wife and my rock. You are going to
be the best mum in the world.”
Currently on a UK tour with the street dance

daughter grows up to follow in his fancy footsteps.

Eugenie and Beatrice have always been close, not
just with each other but also with their father the
Duke of York and mother Sarah, Duchess of York
One, called Slim Me, is claimed to boost energy,
suppress the appetite, balance blood sugar levels to
reduce cravings, and speed the metabolism, thanks
to a combination of ingredients including soluble

Eugenie’s slimmer igure is also the result of early
morning workouts near her Kensington Palace
home. Earlier this year the Princess, who is a director
at London art gallery Hauser & Wirth, revealed she

an interview. “I do circuits, which I love because
they’re quick: burpees, squat jumps, lunges, the

SNAP DECISION
In the days leading up to their big day, the bride and
groom shared photos on the royal family’s website of
themselves as children, as well as a shot of them
together at Balmoral in 2016 and celebrating the
New Year in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier in 2017.
Through the royal family’s Twitter account, Eugenie
also shared a previously unpublished snap of her and
her older sister Princess Beatrice as young girls, plus
a picture of the siblings as bridesmaids at the wedding
in 1993 of their former nanny Alison Wardley.
Eugenie and Beatrice have always been close, not
just with each other but also with their father the

S miling nervously, the groom stepped

out of his car and took a second to
savour the moment. Jack Brooksbank, who
had arrived in a Rolls-Royce Phantom with
his brother and best man Thomas, looked
across to the crowds and the cascade of roses,
hydrangeas, dahlias and berries around the
chapel entrance. He then gestured to his
brother to start walking up the steps with
him. Thomas – who works for a London-
based asset management company – gave
him a reassuring pat on the back.
Jack wore a tie patterned with elephants –
perhaps a tribute the Elephant Family
charity of which Princess Eugenie and
Sarah, Duchess of York are both patrons. It
was fixed with a tie-pin that featured the
white rose of York, representing his bride’s
family, and a pink padparadscha sapphire –
the same type used in Eugenie’s stunning
engagement ring.

 T he fact that Eugenie chose Peter Pilotto – a British
label not known for its bridal gowns – for her big
day was both an unusual and inspired decision.
The Princess has been a loyal fan of the brand’s
patterned dresses since meeting the designers at an
event supporting women artists she co-hosted in 2007.
The duo behind one of the year’s biggest bridal
commissions are Peter Pilotto and Christopher De
Vos, who launched the label from their East London
studio in 2007, quickly making a name for
themselves with their vivid digital print designs,
patterned collections and sculptural shapes.

NAMES BEHIND THE NAME

The multicultural pair – Peter (below right) is
Austrian-Italian and Christopher (below left) is
Peruvian-Belgian – met in 2000 at the prestigious
Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
“What we explained in the beginning was
that Christopher concentrated on shapes and
silhouettes, dealing with pattern-cutting, and me
more the prints and colours,” Peter says. “But it is a
constant dialogue…” His collaborative partner

W ith shy waves, cute smiles and matching outits, the
royal bridal party of little helpers charmed the
nation – and their proud parents – with their starring
roles. Looking picture-perfect, the six bridesmaids and
two pageboys – including the Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge’s children, ive-year-old Prince George and
Princess Charlotte, three – put on a magical display.
The future King and his little sister, who blew a kiss
through the car window to the delighted crowds, are
second cousins of the bride and well versed in such
occasions, having been called upon for the special roles
for their aunt Pippa Middleton’s wedding in 2017, their
uncle Prince Harry’s wedding to the Duchess of Sussex in
May and, recently, the Norfolk nuptials of Kate’s friend
and Charlotte’s godmother Sophie Carter.
The little Princess, who looked adorable in a simple
white dress with patterned sash, tripped as she climbed
the steps of St George’s Chapel but quickly recovered.
The young party also included a sprinkle of showbiz
royalty with Theodora (known as Teddy) Williams, the six-
year-old daughter of The X Factor judges Robbie Williams
and Ayda Field. Teddy stepped out with confidence
alongside the other little attendants, showing a striking
resemblance to her famous father with her big brown
eyes and dark hair.
It was something of a public debut for Teddy who
proved, like her famous parents, that she has some “X
factor” of her own as she took her first steps in the

de Givenchy, a senior banker at
JP Morgan, and his Australian
wife, Zoë, who are close friends of

into the chapel behind the bride
and her father.

York, inside the West Door of St
George’s Chapel, a joyful Princess
Eugenie lashed a radiant smile.
Her arrival was announced with a
fanfare by State Trumpeters from
the Band of the Household Cavalry,
composed especially by the
commanding oficer of the Bands
of the Household Division,
Lieutenant Colonel Darren
Wolfendale, to relect her “positive
and upbeat” nature.
Proud Prince Andrew exhaled
nervously, then smiled back at his
youngest daughter as they
embarked on their walk up the aisle
to the soaring sound of Bach’s
Fantasia in G Major, played by
organist Peter Roper-Curzon.
They stepped slowly through the
chapel’s magniicent nave watched
by a sea of smiling faces from some
of the 800 guests seated collegiate-
style along the aisle.
As the bride approached the
organ screen, a nervous-looking
Jack turned to see her for the irst
time and took off his glasses. His

honour and keep her, in sickness
and in health? And, forsaking all
other, keep thee only unto her, so
long as ye both shall live?”
“I will,” replied Jack, solemnly as
Eugenie beamed alongside him.
As he promised “to love and
to cherish” her, he gazed lovingly
into his bride’s eyes, which were
brimming with joyful tears.
The Princess then said her own
vows in a clear and conident voice.

PUT A RING ON IT
Slipping a ring – made from Welsh
gold gifted by the Queen – on to
Eugenie’s inger, Jack struggled for
a moment as it appeared to stick,
but with her help it inally went on.
There were smiles all around as
they were pronounced “man and

Despite her well-documented struggle with
dyslexia, she showed no sign of nerves and
delivered the reading beautifully. As Beatrice
returned to her seat Jack lashed a broad grin at
her and did a tiny ist pump.
There was another performance by superstar
tenor Andrea, this time of Panis Angelicus, before
the Dean gave his address.
He explained how Eugenie had read The Great
Gatsby soon after she first met Jack and was
instantly reminded of him.

He told the congregation: “The words that
particularly reminded her of Jack concern
Gatsby’s smile. As we heard from the reading: ‘It
was one of those rare smiles with a quality of
eternal reassurance in it… that concentrated on
you with an irresistible prejudice in your favour.’”
Guests and the choir stood to sing Immortal,
Invisible, God Only Wise before Eugenie and Jack
knelt at the altar for prayers led by the Archbishop
of York, the Most Rev. John Sentamu.
He concluded with a prayer of his own, asking
God to: “Be the ire leading Eugenie and Jack in
their love for each other; be the star guiding
them in all that lies ahead; be the good shepherd
calling them again and again to walk into your

smiles on their faces they began their departure to

With the formalities of the ceremony complete,
Jack and Eugenie looked thrilled as they nodded
greetings to their guests, with the Princess telling
one: “Thank you.”

As they stepped out of the chapel into the mellow
autumn sunshine, the cheers from crowds of well-
wishers turned to a roar.
“Do you want to kiss?” asked the Princess.
“It’s our irst time. Careful, don’t fall,” replied
her new husband, holding her by the waist and
leaning in for the embrace. A cheer went up and
soon afterwards all eight of their little attendants
stepped outside looking just as angelic as when they
had entered.

After being waved off by friends and family,
Eugenie and her groom began their journey
through married life with a 15-minute
procession fit for a princess
I t was a scene reminiscent of a fairytale.
A peal of bells from the castle’s Curfew
Tower heralded the start of the newlyweds’
carriage procession while ive pipers from
2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of
Scotland, wearing full Highland dress
uniform, played from the Garter Tower.
The Scottish State Coach, which is
adorned with the Order of the Thistle –
Scotland is a favourite place of Princess
Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank – had been
loaned to the couple by the Queen. It was
pulled by four majestic Windsor greys
named Milford Haven, Plymouth, Storm
and Tyrone, with two more, Sir Basil and
Claudia, leading the cavalcade as noble
outriders. Windsor greys have been
drawing the carriages of successive
monarchs since Queen Victoria’s reign.
After being warmly waved off on the
steps of the chapel by their delighted
friends and families, including the Queen,
the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and
Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Eugenie and
her groom began their journey through
married life with a 15-minute procession
it for a Princess.
Thousands lined the route and there
was a roar of excitement from the crowds
as the carriage reached Castle Hill at the
edge of the town centre.

dressed in eye-catching red, white and
blue garlands, Union lag suits, costume
tiaras and crowns, well-wishers had
flocked from as far afield as Malaysia,
Brazil and the US, as well as from across
the UK.
As the carriage glided past Queen
Victoria’s statue and into the High Street,
the happy couple were greeted by a sea of
patriotic bunting and lines of fans, young
and old, who had claimed prime spots in
the early morning to ensure they caught a
glimpse of the procession.
Eugenie’s eyes sparkled with joy as she
smiled and waved at everyone, visibly
moved by the outpouring of goodwill.
LOVE AND LAUGHTER
“They float with laughter and love,”
Eugenie’s mother Sarah had tweeted after
the couple announced their engagement
in January and that was exactly how the
happy couple looked as their carriage
advanced through the bustling streets of
Windsor, past the famous Guildhall,
where Eugenie’s uncle the Prince of Wales
married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.
Helping keep the crowds entertained
opposite the castle were vocal trio The
Charlalas. Dubbed the singing tea ladies,
they sang old-school Cockney classics
including Get Me to the Church on Time,
Daisy, Daisy and I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of
Coconuts – a reference to the coconut shy
that will be part of the funfair at the
V
Royal Lodge weekend festivities.

WHY EUGENIE’S PARTY VENUE HOLDS
SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE IN HER HEART
F or Princess Eugenie and her new
husband Jack to celebrate their
love surrounded by their family and
friends, there couldn’t have been a
more perfect setting than Royal
Lodge. The sumptuous home,
shared by Eugenie’s parents the
Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of
York, is full of fond family memories
for the Princess so it was only itting
that it took centre stage in the two-
day celebrations.
The lavish property dates back to
the 19th century. With 30 rooms –
including ten bedrooms, a private
chapel and a chandelier-lit sitting
room – it provided a picturesque and
historic backdrop to Eugenie and
Jack’s big day, playing host to a black-
tie wedding breakfast on Friday
night, followed by a day of funfair-
themed celebrations on Saturday.
Following the official ceremony
and the newlyweds’ carriage
procession around Windsor, the
wedding party enjoyed a lunch
hosted by the Queen at Windsor
Castle, as the Duke and Duchess of
Sussex did back in May.
Later on Friday, guests made the
trip three miles south of Windsor
Castle to Royal Lodge, where Prince
Andrew hosted the evening reception.
Then it was all back to theirs the next
day for a party to remember.
Nestled in the heart of Windsor
Great Park, the Berkshire mansion
boasts 21 acres of secluded gardens,
giving the happy couple and their

guests plenty of space to celebrate in
style. And they did just that, with
Saturday’s bash full of funfair rides,
dodgems, coconut shies and a wealth
of food stalls. A source previously
told The Sunday Times that it was to be
“a relaxed party” with “loads of
cocktails, Bloody Marys for the
hangovers and a festival vibe”.
The festivities were organised by
Bentley’s Entertainments, which was
founded by Peregrine Armstrong-
Jones, half-brother of Lord Snowdon,
Princess Margaret’s husband. His
team arranged the celebrations for
Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall’s
wedding in 2011 as well as for Autumn
Kelly and Peter Phillips in 2008, and
David and Victoria Beckham at
Luttrellstown Castle in 1999.
GENERATIONS OF HISTORY
Perhaps best known as one of the
Queen Mother’s residences for more
than 70 years until her death in 2002,
the grade II-listed building became
Prince Andrew’s oficial residence in
2004 when Princesses Eugenie and
Beatrice moved in with their father.
Sarah joined them four years later,
despite the couple’s divorce in 1996
– the Yorks remain a close family unit
and Sarah and Andrew were both
heavily involved in preparations for
the evening event.
Over the years the house has been
the setting of many happy memories
for the royal family. It was once home
to the Queen – then Princess

The young Princesses played in its
sprawling grounds and in 1932 the
sisters were given a small cottage
there named Y Bwthyn Bach – The
Little House – as a gift from the
people of Wales. This was later
renovated by Princess Beatrice and
she spoke of her love for it on a BBC
documentary marking the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Princess Margaret announced her
engagement to Antony Armstrong-
Jones in a photocall at Royal Lodge
in 1960; in 2016, Eugenie, who spent
her teenage years at the much-loved
family home, posed in its sitting room
for a photoshoot with US Harper’s
Bazaar. The article described the
home as: “The definition of comfy
cosy, with family pictures scattered
aro u n d a n d N o r f o l k t er r i er s
wandering in and out.”
The year before she had held her
Disney-themed 25th birthday bash in
the gardens, attended by young
royals including Prince Harry and
Princess Beatrice as well as famous
friends such as Cara Delevingne and

Great Park, combined with liquidambar trees
with maple-like leaves, roses, spray roses,

The bridal bouquet was created by Rob

alongside him.
Dutch-born Rob (inset right) started
business in London 31 years ago, selling f
from the back of his car. He has worked wit
royalty including Sir Elton John and the Beckhams and was in
charge of flowers for Pippa Middleton’s wedding to James
Matthews in 2017.
Describing the bride and groom as a “charming lovely couple”,
Rob said: “It has been the greatest privilege and honour to create
the flowers for Princess Eugenie and Jack, on their wedding day.
Her Royal Highness has been very involved from the start and has
been instrumental in the autumnal theme.”
The blooms reflected the rich and vibrant tones of autumn, with
splashes of ruby red, orange and deep plum. Speaking on the day
Rob said: “I was very lucky to be able to use foliage and berries
from Windsor Great Park.” He also expressed his delight at being
92 part of the couple’s special day: “We wish Princess Eugenie and
Jack our heartfelt congratulations and we hope they have a
magical wedding day.”

The baker selected to create the showstopper
wedding cake for Princess Eugenie and Jack
Brooksbank has said it was a “real joy” to play a
part in their big day.
The bride and groom chose London-based
Sophie Cabot to make a confection that was
“traditional with a modern feel” and large enough
to feed 800 wedding guests.
The five-tier cake (above) features three tiers of
red velvet and two of chocolate sponge, covered
with butter cream and white icing and decorated
with sugar-work autumnal flowers, blackberries
and ivy – to reflect the couple’s Kensington Palace
home Ivy Cottage. An entwined E and J are piped
in gold on each panel of the bottom tier.

the big day, using up to 400 eggs, at least 5
packs of unsalted butter, 33lb of organic sel
raising flour and 44lb of sugar.
“It’s a challenge!” she said of the project, fo
which she was commissioned after being
introduced to the bride and groom by
Eugenie’s father, the Duke of York, after she
made bespoke biscuits for one of his Pitch@
Palace entrepreneur events.

met the couple in the summer. “They were
very relaxed, comfortable,” she said. “I got the
feeling the cake was something they were
very excited about. It was a fun meeting; I
don’t think it’s every day you have a meeting
about cake and you get to try cake.”

– so it’s no surprise that she chose
someone she knows and trusts to
capture her nuptials.
“It is an honour and a privilege to

Eugenie and Jack on this most special
of days,” said Alex. “I look forward with
great excitement to capturing this
significant occasion and wish them
both a happy future together.”
Alex began his career in the art
department at UK Vogue and set up
his own studio in 2014, working for 93

Jack: “We were skiing in a
friend’s place out in Switzerland
and [looks at Eugenie] I saw you
irst, didn’t I?”
Eugenie: “I can’t remember.”
Jack: “And we just stared at
each other.”
Ruth: “So you saw him staring
at you…”
Eugenie: “Yes. And I thought:
‘What a silly hat [laughs].”
And I thought: ‘Who’s that?’
and then [looks at Jack] you
came over and shook my hand
and I was all butterflies and
nervous. I think I rang my
mum that night and said: ‘I’ve
met this guy, Jack.’ And that
was it, I think, about how
it started.
“I remember being like: ‘I
really, really like this guy.
I really want him to like me,
too.’ And then you gave me
this huge windscreen-wiper
wave and that was it. ‘Right, he
likes me.’”
Eamonn: “How would you
describe each other in three
words?”
Jack: “She’s this bright shining
light.”
Eugenie: “Jack’s the kind of guy
– you know when you’re lost at
a party and you can’t find
anyone to talk to and you
start panicking and you need
help? He’ll walk in and make
everyone feel so special. He’ll
scoop you up and talk to you
and make you feel a million
dollars and [looks at Jack] that’s
you. And you’re so humble
and generous.
“So humble and generous –
that’s two words.
“And that person you
immediately know [that]
you’ve got a friend…”
Eamonn: “So a humble,
generous friend?”
Eugenie: “Yes.”

many charities actually. How
many people have you invited
from your charities and how
important is it for you that
they are here?”
Eugenie: “It’s very important.
The RNOH is a huge charity –
the Royal National
Orthopaedic Hospital. I’m
patron of their appeal and I
had an operation when I was
12 on my back. It’s a lovely way
to honour the people who
looked after me and a way of
standing up for young people
who also go through this.
“I think you can change the
way beauty is and you can show
people your scars and I think
it’s really special to stand up
for that. So that’s one really
important one.
“But separate to that, other
organisations that are there –
it’s just very important they get
a chance to be honoured for
the work they do constantly. So
it’s lovely that I can share this
special day with them.”
Eamonn: “In the preparation
for the wedding, was there
ever any evidence that Eugenie
turned into a bridezilla?”
Jack: [Smiling] “No, there
wasn’t a bridezilla. Eugenie has
been amazing. She’s been
incredible. She has the ability
to do a million things at once
in her brain, including working
as well as organising everything
to do with the wedding.”
Eamonn: “What about the
entertainment at the
reception? Is that secret?”
Eugenie: [Looks at Jack] “Well,
we were maybe going to sing,
weren’t we?” [Laughs]
Jack: “I actually thought
you were being serious. I
was thinking: ‘What are
we singing?’”
Ruth: “You looked worried
there, Jack.”
Jack: “I was terriied.”
Ruth: “And how is your
dancing? Have you planned a
routine or are you just going
to see what happens on the
day?”
Eugenie: “No, there’s no
routine.”
Jack: “You’re a very good
dancer. I’m a very bad dancer.”

22 years, married. Any advice
you might like from an old
married couple?”

when it comes to his voice and

“It’s very interesting to listen to
the voices of well-known artists and
it’s important for me to be with
them and close to them when they
sing,” he says of the recording
process. “These are moments that
you learn and grow.”

“As far as my career goes I’m
happy with what I’ve achieved. I just
need to make sure I keep the love
and interest of my audience and
public in general, and give the

Accepting the prize for Artist of the Year,
Taylor said: “I just want to say to the fans, you

of a north-west London pub, where
Ronan Keating holds court while his
Boyzone bandmates Mikey Graham, Keith
Duffy and Shane Lynch roll about
laughing at his tales of late-night escapades.
“It doesn’t happen much these days,”
says the surprisingly fresh-faced singer,
who says it’s his youngest son, one-year-old
Cooper, who usually has him up all night
rather than the raucous parties of his
youth as a singer in one of the 1990s’ most
successful boybands.
The laughter and banter isn’t put on
for the hello! cameras. It comes from 25
years of brotherly friendship – and we
begin to feel like gatecrashers at a family
reunion rather than at a photoshoot.
“Yeah, it’s a bit like that,” grins Shane,
42. “I love these boys. I love everything
about what we created. After 25 years
together we understand our weaknesses
and strengths and when we can push
buttons – and when we shouldn’t. It’s an
amazing position to be in: to love, to care
for and to have banter. It’s a great, great
friendship. I adore them.”
The group has gathered to talk about
their last farewell, a inal tour and album
called Thank You & Goodnight. It has been
two years in the making, with Ed Sheeran
and Gary Barlow providing tracks and
Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon
making her musical comeback as a guest

unearthed, producer Mikey, 46, weaved
some magic to help the band say their
final goodbye on I Can Dream. “We’re
never without him so it’s only right he’s on
the album,” he says. “It was strange for me
to do as I have an emotional attachment.”
“I still ind it hard to believe he’s gone,”
says Ronan, 41. “It still gets you. Right now
I think he’s in there getting ready for the
shoot because in my head there’s ive of
us. When you lose someone close, you feel
like they are about to walk in the door.
“For me, since Steo passed it hasn’t felt
like the Boyzone that we all know and 103
love. That’s why we are doing this.”

laugh when it’s suggested the farewell
could go on for another 25 years.
“It could be a very long goodbye,”
says Mikey, who’s just back from a
juicing retreat with pal Gary Barlow.
“If the fans want it, why not? Elton
John is doing a ive-year goodbye.”
“I’m going to roll with it, enjoy
the world tour and not think about
the end until we’re hanging up our
boots,” says Keith, 44. “We were in
Indonesia [before the earthquake
and tsunami]. We checked out the
markets and cuisine; the wildlife
was amazing. First time round, we’d
have gone to the hotel, got drunk,
performed, got back on a plane
and not seen anything.
“We went from never having
been on a plane to lying four times
a week and were treated like royalty.
The reminiscing now is hilarious.
After 25 years of travelling the
world, there’ll obviously be some
madness and stories to be told.”
Shane adds: “I love listening to

With 25 years to celebrate, the boys have
been pulling out all the stops to make this
their best album yet – and that includes

“I’ve known Ed Sheeran a while after I
met him on The X Factor in Sydney,” says
Ronan. “We were hanging out in New
York and I asked if he’d surprise Storm
and play at our wedding. It was very special.”
The band’s entourage has more than
tripled since their irst time round, with
their wives and kids hanging out backstage.
“The kids love it,” says Mikey of his
daughters Hannah, 22, and Sienna, 12.
“When I’m at home I do the school runs
and I’m just Dad. When they come on
tour they get the special treatment.”
“[Son] Jack is 19 and has just gone to
Australia,” says Ronan, who’s fitting the
tour around his breakfast radio show and
Oz TV show All Together Now. “I look at him
and think I was only 16 when I travelled
the world with Boyzone – it’s crazy.”

Contrary to expectations, Sofía topped off her modern,

Treacy – and not one of the House of Alba’s spectacular

What were Meghan Markle’s skincare must-haves before her royal
wedding? Which foundation got Vogue Williams glowing? And how did
Millie Mackintosh get her hair just right? Whether you’re counting down to
your own big day or you simply want to look your best for a special
occasion, here are our insider tips from the year’s most beautiful brides

DAZZLING DUCHESS
When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry
at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 19 May, she
instantly became one of the century’s iconic brides.
Wearing an elegant gown designed by Clare Waight
Keller at Givenchy, her low chignon and natural
make-up showed off her freckles and immaculate
complexion to perfection. So how did the Duchess
of Sussex get her skin in such good shape?
We know that Meghan, 37, is a fan of Jan Marini
skincare and the Kate Somerville range (which
launched in the UK earlier this year), but her
London-based skin guru, Nichola Joss, whose clients
also include Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow, says
facials are “super important” to the Duchess. “She
likes effective natural products and treatments to anti-
age and de-stress,” says Nichola, whose technique
involves massaging Meghan’s face from the inside out
– as in, through her mouth. This form of lymphatic
massage improves firmness and addresses sagging
muscles. The Duchess has said her cheekbones and
jawline look more “sculpted” after a facial.
As well as in-salon appointments, Nichola says
has “the best-ever skin”. In the lead-up to the big
day, Nichola recommends that brides-to-be
educate themselves in facial massage techniques
using oils and balms to “feed and nourish skin – as
well as improve tone, texture and volume”.
One of Nichola’s favourite massage techniques
opens up and de-puffs the eye area. Try placing your
index fingers on your temples, gently supporting the
skin (pulling slightly towards your hairline). Sweep
your middle finger under your eyes towards the
bridge of the nose and then, applying pressure,
slowly work along your eye brow. Do this six times.
On the morning of your wedding, Nichola
recommends a cleanse and massage first thing.
Not cleansing thoroughly, especially around any
areas where highlighter will be applied, can
cause breakouts. “Use a face cloth or flannel
drenched in ice-cold water,” she advises. “Apply to
the face and neck, press onto the skin for ten
seconds then pat dry. Follow up with a facial toner.”
And what if a spot does crop up on the day? “Use a
cotton bud to apply cider vinegar straight onto the

This summer, model and presenter
Vogue Williams, 33, did her own make-up
when she married former Made in Chelsea star
Spencer Matthews in the Scottish Highlands.
Wearing a bespoke Paul Costelloe gown that

mum talks us through how she created her

Vogue, why did you decide to do
your own wedding day make-up?
“Because we were up in Scotland, miles from
anywhere, and it was a really quiet family
affair so it was easier to do my own glam. I
was there with my sister and her girlfriend; it
was nice doing our make-up together.”
Did you practise beforehand?
“I didn’t do a run-through but I learn a lot
every time I get my make-up done, and
I learn about products, so I knew what I
wanted to use and that I wanted a simple
look. Spencer prefers me without make-up
but that was never going to happen. So I
went for a more pared-down kind of finish.”

How was your wedding make-up different
from your everyday look?
“My look is quite neutral anyway but I do
love individual lashes, so I put loads on and

There are few occasions in life
when we want to radiate health as
much as on our wedding day.
I’m writing this 13 years after mine
and I can tell you that I didn’t
account for my wellness or energy
levels when I was in the throes of
planning. I remember how the
details of the day quickly overwhelm
you – so much so that you’re the last
person you think about.
Try to loosen the focus on that one

day and instead think long term. It
will instantly release the pressure and
you’re more likely to establish good
habits that last. By having a plan and
being consistent, you’re also less
likely to feel stressed; the stress
hormone cortisol plays havoc with
your mood, skin and body.
A sensible place to start is by
cleaning up your diet, slowly and
realistically. And by “diet” I just mean
the foods that you eat – please don’t
resort to faddish plans. My advice is

HELLO!’s favourite master pâtissier,
shares a showstopping wedding cake
recipe he created in honour of
Princess Eugenie and Jack
Brooksbank. Here, Eric guides you
through the making process and talks
about his passion for baking…

“I have always loved making wedding

cakes for my friends and family, even though it
does make me a little more nervous than usual.
The cake is such an important part of a wedding
day. It has to be perfect as all eyes are on it.
“This cake is a timeless design but has the
wow factor. It is decorated with hundreds of
moulded rose petals that create a kind of
delicate finish reminiscent of frilled material.
Each tier is separated with two rows of fresh
Vendela roses. I wanted a fresh, summery flavour
so I created a raspberry pink velvet sponge that
works well with the zesty lemon buttercream.”

Eric, you trained as a pâtissier in France,

worked as a chef for the French navy then
moved to England to work with Michel and
Albert Roux. That was quite some journey…
“Today, London is one of the best foodie
destinations in the world but when I arrived in
the 1990s the food scene was far from impressive.
There was little choice and certainly not
anything such as gastro pubs and food markets
or pop-ups. I still enjoyed it though – I was a boy
from Brittany working for the legendary Roux
brothers. It does not get better than that.”

“I wanted to be a pastry chef from the age of six.
In France there is a pâtisserie on every street
 corner, no matter how small the village.
I was always fascinated by the displays, the
packaging – some of the shops were like
jewellery boutiques. It was a vocation, a calling.”
Tell us about your celebrity clients, and about
the Queen Mother’s 101st birthday cake…
“I have baked cakes for a lot of VIPs but as
far as a I am concerned every customer is a
celebrity. A cake takes centre stage at an event
so it’s important that we look after our customer
from the initial consultation to the finish. The
Queen Mother’s 101st cake was decorated with
her beloved corgis in icing. I delivered it in
person to Clarence House.”
Your cake boutique, Cake Boy, also offers
courses in making desserts and cakes…
“I always dreamed about opening my own
pâtisserie and cookery school, and when we
needed to move to find a new kitchen, a space in
south-west London presented itself. I am the first
person in my kitchen when I am not travelling. I
think that helps – customers are always happy to
see the patron on the premises. I have high
standards so me being there means that it’s easy
to ensure that everything is tip-top.
“It’s a glamorous, laid-back café vibe – I think
customers quite enjoy that. We have regulars
and the staff look after them well.
“Our cookery school classes include Chocolate,
Afternoon Tea and French Country Baking. The
classes run once a week and are a full day. We
also hold bespoke classes and lots of brides-to-be
take up this option for their hen days.”
What’s the most memorable cake you have made,
apart from hello!’s 30th birthday cake?
“It was for a couple who were retiring. They
wanted a cake that represented everywhere that
they had been. It took on the world. We also
decorated it with icons that depicted big
moments in their lives. It was a masterpiece and
the base was made up of Louis Vuitton trunks.”
Who in the industry do you most admire?
“I admire any young chef that has trained hard
and works hard and is an ambassador for his
industry and is an inspiration for his colleagues
and customers.”
You’ve won awards, hosted TV shows and
published books. What else would you like to do?
“Well, I am going to space – I am a future Virgin
Galactic Astronaut! I hope that happens soon. In
the meantime I’d like to continue what I’m doing.
I really enjoy collaborating with travel brands and
am lucky to work with some of the best.”

friends to decorate a table in our village to celebrate the
marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. It
was an exciting time nationwide, and people came up
with all kinds of tributes, including this cocktail invented
by Daniel Baernreuther at The Savoy. When I dropped by
the hotel’s American Bar in the week before the wedding I
couldn’t resist trying it. It captured the mood perfectly.”

Preparation time 5-10 minutes

INGREDIENTS
• Crushed ice
• 2.5ml/½ tsp Green Chartreuse
• 2.5ml/½ tsp maraschino liqueur
• 20ml/4 tsp Martini Rosso vermouth
• 20ml/4 tsp Bombay Sapphire gin
• 5ml/1 tsp gomme syrup
• Champagne, ice cold, to top up
• Orange twist, to garnish

1. Chill a coupe glass.

2. Pour all the ingredients except the champagne
over ice in a mixing jug. Stir.
