GO - KART DESIGN REPORT

TEAM NAME: GITS TRIUMPHANT 2K18
We had made a go-kart having creativity with few restrictions mentioned in the
rule book. The chosen project is based on the design and analysis of the chassis of
a low ground clearance Go-kart. The project aimed to create a chassis that
possesses good performance and features.Design and fabrication of the Go-kart
focuses on developing a simple and easily operated vehicle. Aspects of ergonomics,
safety, ease of manufacture, and reliability are incorporated into the design
specifications. 3D models have been made for analysis purpose in SOLIDWORKS
and analysis has been made in Ansys.
The design objectives set out to be achieved were three simple goals applied
to every component of the car: durable, light weight, and high performance to
optimizing the design by avoiding over designing, which would also help in reducing
cost.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY
We approached our design by considering all possible alternatives for a system and
modeling them in CAD software like CATIA, ANSYS, solid works etc. The design
objectives set out to be achieved were three simple goals applied to every
component of the car: durable, light weight, and high performance to optimizing the
design by avoiding over designing, which would also help in reducing cost.
Design of any component is consists of three major principles:
1. Optimization
2. Safety
3. Comfort

CHASSIS DESIGN:
The chassis of go-kart must consist of stability, torsion rigidity, as well as it should
have relatively high degree of flexibility as there is no suspension.

Chassis Length =147.6cm

Chassis Width =78.2cm

Height =59.78cm

Ground clearance = 31.75mm (with the driver aboard)

Material Used = AISI 4130

Chassis Weight= 7.01Kg

Material Selection:
AISI-4130 is the best and the lightest & this material work best when welded using
TIG welding.
AISI 4130 steel can be easily machined using conventional methods.

ENGINE:
Engine Selection
We use a HONDA SHINE 125cc Cylinder 4-stroke petrol engine, which produces
about 10.30 BHP of power at 7500 rpm. We use 4- stroke engine because this is
used for racing and good mileage also.

Engine type Single Cylinder,4-Stroke, SI Engine

Displacement 124.73 cc
Max Power 11PS @ 8000rpm
Max Torque 10.80Nm @ 5500rpm
Max Speed 93 Kmph
Cooling System Air Cooled
Drive Type Chain Drive
0-65Kmph 5sec.
Acceleration 3.43m/s*s
Gear Box 4-Speed Gear Box
Transmission Manual Type
Engine Type - Honda Shine 4stroke, Air cooled
Displacement - 124.7cc
Max Speed – 85kmph
Acceleration - 3.43m/s*s

STEERING SYSTEM:

Steering Ackermann steering (mechanical

system linkages)
Wheel base 1055 mm

Track width 948 mm

Turning radius 3629 mm

Steering ratio 1:1

Inside angle 18.76

Outside angle 25.18

Selection: Ackerman steering Geometry with mechanical linkages mechanism this
geometry makes the inside wheel steer to a greater angle than the outside wheel
and all the wheels roll about a common turn center. Since the cornering speeds are
small, Ackerman geometry is an ideal choice.

BRAKING SYSTEM:
The disc brake is less bulky and less in weight as compared to drum. Disc brakes
have less joints and links as compared to drum.
The braking system was designed by determining parameters necessary to produce
a given deceleration and comparing to the deceleration that a known braking system
would produce.

Considerations for braking system selection:

*Master cylinder Dia. 10 mm
*Caliper piston diameter 25.4 mm
*Stopping distance 2.237 m
WHEEL AND TYRE:

We choose standard go-kart wheel as per requirement of competition. The rear wheels are locked
by using castle nut and cotter pin .The selection of the tires according to the requirement of
performance, event, as well as bugged play an important role.
