ABSTRACT

Internship is one of the medium for student to experience themselves about on what
they have learned in class and try to adopt in a working environment. This internship season
must be held for every student before finish study and it will help students to work confidently
after graduate because they had experience in working place. This is because most of the
employment companies want to hire a worker who had work experienced than workers who
had no work experienced. Furthermore, it will also help students to ready to break through the
real life after they ended of study in many aspects. For example, they can communicate easily
with the other worker, adopt the working environment well and also have skilled which is
important to do the jobs.

and gas detector. Products that has provided by SMSB in including the safety helmet, eye
protection, fall protection, foot protection, hearing protection and also hand protection.

1.5.1.1 Safety Helmet (Head Protection)

Figure 3 & 4: Head Protection

Basically, head protection is particularly important for employees working in

environments such as construction because of the increased risk of injury because of falls,
accidents and handling heavy materials or machinery. Protective helmets must do three things
which are resist penetration, absorb the shock of a blow and protect against electrical shock.

1.5.1.2 Eye Protection

Figure 5 & 6: Eye Protection

This protection gear for eyes had come with many designs depending upon the threat
that is to be reduced. It will protect our eyes from fling debris, chemicals, and other dangerous
hazard with safety These devices must meet the ANSI standard for eye and face protection.
[ANSI Z87.1]

13
1.5.1.3 Fall Protection

Figure 7: Fall Protection

Fall protection is required especially when workers are exposed to fall hazards while working

at elevations of more than five feet, or over water. Typically, guardrails or other barriers are

used to protect workers. In situations where guardrails are not practical, or when working from

two-point suspended scaffolding, personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) (such as safety harnesses,

lifelines, lanyards) are required. In some situations, positioning device systems such as restraint

(tether) lines or aerial lifts are used to provide protection from falling off an unguarded edge.

The personal fall protection systems must prevent a worker from falling (positioning
device systems) or arrest the fall of workers without causing injuries. Furthermore, the personal
fall protection must prevent workers from striking or falling to a lower level (PFAS).

PROJECT 1

HYDROGEN SULFIDE (H2S) REMOVAL

2.1 Project Detail

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is the chemical compound which a colourless gas with the

characteristic foul odour of rotten eggs. It is very poisonous, corrosive and flammable. H2S

formed during decomposition of organic matter (animal and plant,) but generated largely by

oil burning and refining processes.

Basically, this H2S Removal project is the system to reduce the concentration of H2S

gas by using the absorption of sea water process. It is based on research and development

(R&D) of University Technology PETRONAS.

2.2.1 Microcontroller ADAM Series

The project has used ADAM series as microcontroller which provide wide variety of features
in data acquisition. The microcontroller will change the signal that receive from sensors from
analog to digital before the computer receive and from digital to analog when the signal is send
from the computer to the output equipment’s such as valves. The type of ADAM is ADAM
5000L/TCP which has 4-slot Ethernet-based Distributed DA & C System. In this project, the
4 slots have been used for 2 input model ADAM 5017, 1 output model ADAM5024 and 1 relay

Table 3: Output Instrument in H2S Project

21
2.3 H2S Schematic Diagram

Figure 13: Schematic Diagram for H2S Project

It is important to make the schematic diagrams of H2S project first before doing the
connection of the devices and the instruments. The schematic diagram has been made by using
Microsoft Visio software. The designing is based on the datasheet that have been given by the
supplier and through surfing on the Internet. This is important, so the connection of the
instrument is correct and to make sure that the instrument get an enough power supply. The
power consumption need to be calculated to see whether the supply can support the maximum
power consumption of the instruments.

22
Problems:

1) The mass flow controller and solenoid valve does not give the specification of power
consumption clearly. This makes it harder to determine the exact power consumption
of the instruments.
2) The Aalborg Stainless Steel Mass Flow Controller (H2S) Model and Aalborg Gas Flow
Transmitter does not provided analog wire for it be connected to the microcontroller.
This make the wiring connection to be directly connected to the computer.
3) The requested instruments should come with 24V power supply requirement. Instead,
some of the instrument that is delivered come with 12V power supply requirement. This
mean the schematic diagram need to be changed because there need to be two power
sources, 24V and 12V.

Solutions:

1) The power of the instruments can be calculated by using formula P=IV to determine
the total power consumption of the whole system.
2) The RS232 to USB adapter can be used to directly transmit the signal of the instrument
to computer because it is already in a digital form.
3) A new 12 V power supply need to be brought and the schematic diagram need to be
updated.

2.4 Termination Diagram

After the schematic diagram has been completed, the termination diagram need to be drawn
before the termination process in the panel box can begin. The termination drawing is divided
by 3 voltage which are DC 24V, DC 12V and AC 240V. The terminal block is used to connect
the wiring from the instruments to the ADAM series and power supply. There are several
reasons the terminal block is used. One of the reason is that it is easier to detect the problem
with the wiring by referring to the termination diagram of terminal block. Another reason is
that it is easier to do cable management by using the terminal block. The termination diagram
is drawn by using Autodesk Inventor as same as the termination box such in Figure 14 and
Figure 15 below. The size of the termination box that has been drawn is follow by the actual
size so that it is sure that the devices that will be used have enough space to put in the
termination box.

23
Figure 14: Panel Box Layout Front Look Figure 15: Panel Box Layout Side Look

Figure 16: DC 12V Line Cable

24
Figure 17: AC 240V Line Cable

Figure 18: DC 24V Line Cable

The connection of the termination diagram need to be clear so that the electrical
technician is easy to understand the diagram and will not done an incorrect connection. It is
dangerous because there is a different types of power supply. If the wrong connection is made,
there is high possibility the instrument involve will damage.

25
2.5 Electrical Wiring Installation

The electrical wiring installation is make when the schematic diagram and termination diagram
are finished which when the electrical technician has sure about each of the instruments
connection. The wiring installation is made when each part of the instrument has been mounted
on the panel and the regulator panel. The figures below are the example of instrument wiring
that has been done at the panel and regulator panel

Figure 19: Instrument Panel Figure 20: Regulator Panel

To make the cable at the panels looks tidy, the cables on the panels has been arranged by using
the cable tie and cable tie holder as look at the Figure 21 below. During the wiring installation,
there are some of the length of the already instrument’s cables does not reach to the termination
box. So, the junction box has been used connect the already cable with a new one since this is
the safe and tidy work. This is the project are involving the H2S gas which is an inflammable
type of gas. So, if there is some leakage of the gas, so it is dangerous if there is a possibility a
spark of the electrical can make some explosion happened. The used of the junction box can
prevent the possibility from happen.

26
Figure 21: Junction Box installed at Panel Figure 22: Junction Box at Regulator Panel

Figure 23: The Arranged Cables at Instrument Panel

27
All the cables from the panels will be connected to the panel box which is in the other room.
So, the cables are arranged neatly and mounted on the wall to the other side of the room as
shown in Figure 24 below. The cables are mounted on the wall by using the galvanize cable
tray and the cable ties

Figure 24: Arranged Cable at Cable Tray

2.6 Connectivity Testing Procedure

The connectivity testing procedure is important for the electrical technician make sure that the
connectivity of the instruments is correct, and the power supply can go through them without
any problems. The checklist also will help the technician to detect any mistakes and error of
the connection faster and systematic. The example of connectivity testing procedure can be see
below.

PROJECT 2

HOSE REEL DRUM

3.1 Project Detail

SMSB have become a contractor in safety fire alarm system services for Universiti Teknologi

Petronas (UTP), which in this chapter will be focused toward replacing hose reel drum at the

student’s hostel.

The UTP has named students hostel as Village 1 until Village 5. In each respective

village, the blocks are more divided into A, B, C, D, and E. These blocks are usually having 4

floors while some are up to 5 floors with no elevator. Each floor has at least 2 or 3 rooms

containing the fire hose reel. These hose reel drum usually needs inspection every six months

period. Hence, when the time comes, SMSB will send personnel to do the inspection, and

replace any necessary hose reel drum.

Figure 29: A Hose Reel Drum

The inspection firstly is done in Village 4 covering all the blocks from A until E. From

the inspection, there are more than 16 hose reel drums are damaged and needs to be replaced.

32
Moreover, there are 2 ball valves of has broken or not in a good position since both always in

normally opened state.

Figure 30: Ball Valve for Hose Reel

Continuing the task, the damaged hose reel drums in the Village 4 and 5 are replaced.

The damaged hose reel drums usually because they have leaked. Furthermore, there are also a

case which the nozzles are broke, and leaking happened such as in Figure 31.

Figure 31: Leaking at Nozzle

33
Figure 32: The New Hose Reel Drum

Figure 33: One of The Hose Reel Drum That Needs Replacing

Figure 14 above shows that when want to replace the new hose reel drum, the hose is

first repealed from the drum by open the pipe clip at the drum. Then, union coupling will be

opened first by using pipe wrench to replace the drum. It can be seen in Figure 34. There is a

problem happened which the union coupling is too tight to open because of rust. So, union

coupling will be spray by using the WD40 to remove the rust from union coupling.

34
Figure 34: Replacing Old Drum with New One

Since there are many hose reel drums that need to be replaced, the works are takes a

few days to complete. In the end, all the damaged hose reel drums have been replaced with a

new one, and they can now be used again with their full efficiency when the time needs it. The

next six months, this work might also be repeated.

CHAPTER 4

PROJECT 3

HEAT AND SMOKE ALARM DETECTOR

4.1 Project Detail

Fire alarms systems also one of the services provided by the SMSB for the UTP. SMSB

has collaborates with Pahlawan Dinamik Sdn Bhd company to make the fire alarm system

services for the UTP from time to time. Both companies will send a few of their personnel to

complete the jobs. This task require trainee to be outstation for a few days and stay together

with the personnel at the homestay near the UTP campus.

This service will need to check the condition of the heat and smoke alarm detectors at

the buildings in UTP and at the same time testing the functionality of the detectors. This is to

make sure that the detectors are totally functioned and if there are any heat or smoke detectors

damage or broken, they will be changed to new one.

Figure 35: Smoke Detector

A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire.

Commercial security devices issue a signal to a fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm

system, while household smoke detectors, also known as smoke alarms, generally issue a local
36
audible or visual alarm from the detector itself. Properly functioning detectors give an early

warning that makes escape more likely, but the unit is more than just an alarm.

Figure 36: Heat Detector

A heat detector is a fire alarm device designed to respond when the convected thermal

energy of a fire increases the temperature of a heat sensitive element. The thermal mass and

conductivity of the element regulate the rate flow of heat into the element.

Here is a brief explanation on the difference between the smoke and the heat detector:

 Heat detectors are intended to minimize property damage by reacting to the change in

temperature caused by a fire.

 Smoke detectors are intended to protect people and property by generating an alarm earlier

in the development of a fire. People need time to react, and every second is critical during

an actual fire event.

37
These smoke and heat detector does not last forever, hence it is appropriate to test the

functionality of these detectors so that people can have reliable detection of fires.

The student’s hostels are checked first. The fire and smoke detector are located at the

ceiling in the student’s room. Therefore, each floor in every student’s blocks needs to be

checked. Once in the rooms, a hair dryer tied to a long bar is used to supply heat to the heat

detector.

Figure 37: Heat Detector Testing

The Figure 18 above shows the hair dryer is supplying heat to the heat detector, and when the

red light on the heat detector blinks, it shows that the heat detector are still functioning and is

sending alarm signal to alert people.

38
Figure 38: Smoke Detector Testing

As for smoke detector, a smoke is spray to the smoke detector. If the sensor in the smoke

detector detects the smoke, it means that the smoke detector is still working just fine. This is

also shown by the blinking of a red light on the smoke detector.

Apart from that, the break glasses in each floor are also checked. The break glass fire

alarm is a manual break point, which is when someone operates a break glass unit, then alarm

sounders operate to warn others in the building that there may be a fire and need to evacuate.

The figure above shows the module that has been damaged, and it is hence replaced with a new

one. This module serves the function to send signal to main fire alarm panel when the break

glass has broken.

PROJECT 5

SMSB ELECTRICAL FLOOR PLAN

6.1 Project Detail

In year 2017, SMSB has moved the office to a new place in Panorama Lapangan Perdana, Ipoh.
At the moment, there are a lot of renovation need to do at the office to give the office more
comfortable and equipped with infrastructures such as such meeting room, workshop and
server room. So, the trainee is asked to make the electrical floor plan for the ground and upper
floor from the floor plan that has been given in Figure 48 and Figure 49 below.

Figure 48: Floor Plan for Ground Level

Figure 49: Floor Plan for Level 1

45
The task has been given is to make the electrical floor plan that including the electric
plan for:

i. Lighting and fan/air conditioner

ii. Switch socket outlet (s/s/o) and fire alarm installation
iii. Local-area network (LAN) and telephone line

The electrical plan need to take an account of the factor of the room such as the function of the

room, number of workers at the room, size of the room and others so that this renovation can

accommodate the needed of the worker there. Furthermore, there is also some request from the

executive director to make an electrical plan that is suitable for the meeting room that will be

used glasses as partition. After some trials and corrections, the trainee has made the electrical

floor as in the Figure 50 and Figure 51 below.

Figure 50: Electrical Floor Plan for Level 1

46
Figure 51: Electrical Floor Plan for Ground Level

6.2 Air Conditioner Power Consumption

Moreover, the trainee needs to calculate the power of air conditioner (horse power unit) that
will be used depends on the size of the room. This is important so that the humidity of an air
conditioner can totally cover the area of the room. The formula can be seen as below:

1. Calculate the volume of the room:

Width x length x height
=………… (in cubic feet)
2. Multiply volume by 6
C1 = Volume x 6
3. Label the number of people that will occupy the room by N (estimation). 1 person
produces about 500 BTU/hr of heat for normal office related activity. Multiply N and
normal heat/hr for a person.
4. Estimated cooling capacity need: -
C1 + C2 =………… in (BTU/hr)
 Power in BTU/hr Power in horse power (HP)
 HP = Btu/h x 3.292x10-4

CHAPTER 7

CONCLUSION

7.1 Introduction

There are lots of things that student has learnt when doing an industrial training as a engineer
assistant along the two months. So, it has become the responsible as engineer assistant to do
their jobs very well. These jobs will give good stress to the student as they will become more
punctual with time and develop a good attitude. Student may learn a lot of things even in this
short time.

As we know, student will test about how they know the theory that they have learn in
class and forced themselves to do it in this practical time. Furthermore, they will become
matured especially when they need to make their own decision. This also, will help the person
become more independent in doing their job and help them to increase their confidence.

Among of that, this is to evaluate whether the place of the industrial training is either
suitable for the next electrical engineering students or not. This is important to make sure that
the time for the students doing the practical will use wisely and it is kind of loss if the student
will make an industrial training with the place which not suitable for.

7.2 Lesson Learned

A lot of knowledge can be earned in industrial training. With the experience gained,
trainee has an exposed idea of real working environment which are totally different from what
have been taught in class. Not just a mere theory, but technical skills are also applied in solving
problems. Training at SMSB have no more no less, teach trainee that the very crucial aspect
when doing any work regardless of any field, the safety should be the utmost priority. No life
can be paid to be brought back to life. Along the training duration, all the challenges and
hardship faced have turn trainee to be a more confident person, a person who should think
thoroughly in solving any kind of problem and the importance of teamwork. Apart from that,
soft skills such as communication skill, responsibility and practical work have also increases
during the end of the internship period.

48
7.3 Limitation and Recommendations

The time for the students to do the internship is too short and not much can be learnt by the
student from the real engineer and it is such a disadvantage to the student himself. It is preferred
for the time of the internship to be extend for among four to six months and do it at the last
semester since there is high possibility the student can be absorbed as a permanent worker if
his job is satisfied by the company. Moreover, the company itself should be more responsible
in preparing a suitable supervisor for the student during doing the internship. It will be a loss
for both parties among the student and company if the student can’t do the job efficiently and
use a lot of time to learn a new thing in the office since there is no suitable supervisor to teach
him. While, the company will lose a lot of time to finish one simple job done by the internship
student. Even though this is the time for the student to learnt by himself in the office
environment, however, supervisor also has an important role to smooth the job of the company
in handling the internship student.
