Lesotho has become the first African country to

 Big Tobacco Buys In
A publicly traded U.S. tobacco company has
bought controlling stakes in two Canadian
marijuana producers and invested in a North
Carolina hemp grower, making what is believed
to be the first foray by a significant tobacco
business into the cannabis industry.

Alliance One International, which trades on the

NYSE under the ticker symbol AOI, said it
acquired a 75% equity position in Canada’s
Island Garden and an 80% stake in Goldleaf
Pharm.

This adds to other NYSE listed companies who

are already in the cannabis space.  Scotts
Miracle Gro (NYSE: SMG) and Constellation
Brands (NYSE: STZ) are also involved with the
cannabis arena.  Scotts Miracle Gro has
previously invested $500 million and
Constellation Brands has invested $200 million

• Sales of marijuana have overtaken alcohol in a city

in Colorado, three years after the state became the
first in the US to legalise recreational use of the drug.

• Licensed vendors in the ski resort of Aspen raked in

A study by Georgia State University last year

found alcohol sales had tumbled 15 per cent in US
states where medical marijuana had been

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

• Our bodies have an entire regulatory system called the endocannabinoid system
(ECS), or the endogenous cannabinoid system. In fact, this endocannabinoid
system is the largest, self regulating system within our bodies. The ECS uses
cannabinoids to transmit certain signals and regulate homeostasis within us - it
serves to balance our mood, appetite, sleep and hormone production.

• Plant based cannabinoids have analogues in the human body, meaning that our
bodies produce cannabinoids too. Our cells have receptor sites for cannabinoids
(CB-1 and CB-2, described below), and this helps regulate our immune system.
